This video is about introducing solid foods to your 6-month-old baby, specifically with 5 easy and safe finger foods that they can start self-feeding. The host of the video, Katie Ferraro, is a Registered Dietitian specializing in baby-led weaning and a mom of 7 children @babyledweanteam. She shares her expertise on how to safely and effectively feed your baby in her weekly videos on KZfaq.
First, Katie talks about how babies can eat more foods than we give them credit for, and waiting too long between introducing new foods can actually slow down their progress in becoming independent eaters. She then proceeds to show viewers how to prep and cook 5 safe foods for babies to self-feed in week 1 of starting solid foods.
The first food she covers is apples, which can be a choking risk if given raw. She demonstrates how to prepare soft pieces of peeled, cooked apple using a poaching technique that makes it safe for babies to eat. The cooked apples can be seasoned with nutmeg or cinnamon and served to the baby in a bowl.
Next, Katie talks about cauliflower, a great first vegetable to introduce to babies. She explains how to cut the florets properly to create a built-in handle for babies to pick up the cooked cauliflower with their whole hand or palmar grasp. She suggests using oil to coat the cauliflower florets before seasoning them with any no-salt seasoning like paprika or garlic powder. The florets can then be baked in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until they become golden and soft. Once cooled, the florets can be placed in a suction bowl for the baby to pick up and enjoy.
The other three foods that Katie covers in the video include buckwheat, beef (specifically, chuck roast), and egg. She also provides a link to download a printable with the menu for these 5 foods plus 5 more, including basic preparation, cooking instructions, and how to serve them to your 6-month-old baby.
Throughout the video, Katie emphasizes that babies need lots of time to learn how to eat and may need to see a food 10 or 15 times before they like or accept it. She also encourages parents to offer different varieties and colors of foods to their babies to mix up their diet and introduce them to new flavors and textures.

My baby is 20 weeks but able to sit up for a few minutes without support and can sit with support for a long time, he can bring his hands to his mouth and is showing interest in food… is that too early to start? You always mention 6mo.

My baby rarely eats much of the food I serve him. He plays with it but doesn’t put it in his mouth

Early on they really don’t eat much and that’s typical. Babies need lots of time to learn HOW to eat and playing with food is actually part of the whole sensory experience that is learning how to eat. Hang in there, he will get the hang of it soon!

I gave my baby a Gerber teether melt (a big cracker) and he choked on it cuz the big piece broke off. How’s he gonna eat the chuck roast or piece cauliflower at 7 months? So confused

Their gag reflex is high when they’re small so sometimes it looks like choking but it’s just them learning how to eat

I like to do fried egg strips for babies! You can also do a steamed egg or scrambled eggs. I would suggest breaking the yolk and spreading it throughout the white so that your baby gets to try both the yolk (has the iron and fats that are important for brain development) and the white (has the protein).
