Even if you DNF The Virgin Suicides, be sure to check out Sofia Coppola’s movie version. It is hard to picture it being adapted for the screen since the book is wordy and has little dialogue (if I recall) but is is done so brilliantly :)

Hey Nick, I finished the McDuff translation of Crime and Punishment last month. Once the writing style clicked in my head, it was very digestible and easy to get into the rhythm of reading Dostoyevsky. For this reason, I picked up the Mcduff translation of Brothers Karamazov for my TBR list. So, I don't have a comprehensive argument as to why you should read Mcduff other than it's the one I read. Love from Winnipeg.

I love the energy on your channel. Thanks for the great update! I’m reading Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams and am loving it. I finished ‘Salem’s Lot and that was my first Stephen King in many years. It has me excited to read more so next King book will be The Stand.

Can’t wait to see your review of Wizard and glass. So many love it but I have it near the bottom of my king books that I’ve read. It had so much unnecessary bloat to it. Could’ve been 300 pages shorter and had the same effect in my opinion. But it’s just that, my opinion. I have Jurassic park on my TBR, I need to move it up a few notches already!

P&V translation of Crime and Punishment is quite good. I’m reading it right now and it’s my first Dostoyevsky, but I do like it. Very much agree with your depiction of his writing. Very feverish and claustrophobic, I don’t think that’s a translation thing, it feels like a Dostoyevsky thing (what do I know, though?)

I'm going to read "Hard Rain Falling" because I loved "Stoner". I love reading long books, too. I read several recently, one was Joyce Carol Oates' masterpiece: "Night.Sky.Stars.Death" and the other was Barbra Streisand's memoir (900 pages and not one single misspelling or gammatical error). Both were superb. The books you received from Folio...wow! The book covers were mind blowing...I would buy them just for the art.

You should read Who Goes There by John W Campbell as we as the movie tie in to John Carpenters The Thing. Both different then the movie and sooooooo good!

The Dark Tower series is one of the reasons I got back into reading regularly as a hobby again. I recently read Wizard and Glass, and I really enjoyed it. Was even more hooked on Roland of Gilead afterward. Enjoy!

Reading at the moment "A discovery of witches" by Deborah Harkness,"The starless sea" by Erin Morgenstern,"The easy life in Kamusari" by Shion Miura and "Dallergut dream department store" by Miye Lee all at once... Sometimes i need different kind of books to wake myself up again,to the joy of books,words that inspire or make you see things from another angle or just be amused for a bit... Neat surprise to see you picked up a copy of Hard Rain Falling. That's cool. As for The Virgin Suicides, it's one of my favorite novels; though I too was bored for much of it, yet I couldn't put it down. Addictively boring, as I like to call it. Stick with it - the closing lines alone are a gut-punch.

Katz is the best translation, and then Pevear/Volokhonsky is the best after Katz.

For Crime and Punishment I would recommend looking into the Michael R. Katz translation or the P&V which is the translators you read for NFU. Katz has a more flowing and easy to understand translation and P&V have a more literal translation. Those are the two strongest to me so you would just have to decide what kind of read you would enjoy more. Me personally, Katz.

Michael Katz for Crime and Punishment, and Ignat Avsey for Karamazov Brothers. I'm a native Russian speaker and I strongly suggest avoiding P&V translations at all costs.

@@biteofdog That's great if you enjoyed reading it, it's all a matter of personal preference at the end of the day. The Master and Margarita is one of my favorite novels of all time, and I personally think the P&V translation is both awkward and inaccurate, when comparing it to the original Russian. A lot of the humor and subtle references are lost. P&V's methodology in translating literature is also quite questionable in my opinion. My favorite translation of Master & Margarita is the Burgin/O'Connor. That version also has a lot of very useful footnotes.

Every NYRB Classics title is good. I've read many, and really haven't found a bad one yet. Hard Rain Falling is a good rec. You really can't miss with them.

For me, the worst part when I'm in a rut is becoming invested in a story and characters -- feeling that the world and people are real and matter. A book, through no fault of its own, just never starts to dance of the page. And I get all in my head about it. Short books kind of suck for getting out of a rut for that because I have to keep becoming reinvested. But a long book that consistently follows a certain character or cast of characters means I just have to overcome the investment hurdle once and can find the joy in reading again.

For any of the big Russians, I swear by Peter and Volokhonsky translations. They do a great job capturing the unique style of each author. There Dostoyevsky does not sound like there Tolstoy, for example

Agree so much about Lost World. I enjoyed Jurassic Park and immediately read LW and I was prettttttttty disappointed. I finished it, so that's saying something (lol)...... but yeah would not recommend. But the first book was so fun!!

A lot of people knock on the p&v translations of Dosto but I read their translation of crime and punishment and really enjoyed it. I think most tried and trusted translation is Garnett, Katz supposed to be good and a little more modern sounding. I say if you enjoyed p&v for notes then give them a shot for crime and punishment!

I'm not American (sorry, I mean I'm not Canadian! 🙂), I'm a European booklover (Belgian) and I do wonder if you guys (on that other side of the world) know any Belgian or Dutch authors, cause we do have some good ones!! Same thing happened to me with VS by Eugenides years ago and I DNF'ed it BUT his book Middlesex went straight into one of my all time favourites so you might like it instead.

Hey, Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite authors, and Ill admit that the best translation is somewhat subjective. Most agree the Peaver and Volokhonsky is the best translation PERIOD. However, I personally think that the Penguin David Mcduff translation of crime and punishment is very accessible and the one that I enjoyed the most. Regardless, the Peaver and Volokhonsky translation is probably the most lyrical, and true to Dostoyevsky's original prose. Love your videos :)

My main criticism with Pierce Browns work is I feel like he doesn’t know what genre and tone he wants his books to have. Red Rising feels derivative and a bit contrived. You get to Morning Star and it feels like a Space Opera. Then you get into Iron Gold and it finally feels like a decent run at stabilizing the narrative with POV chapters. By the time you finish Dark Age you’re wondering how it got so violent and abysmal.

For Crime and Punishment, I’d recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. I read their translation of Crime and Punishment and War and Peace. You can read Fight Club for Pride month (a little late) - he’s gay. There’s a great Soft White Underbelly interview on KZfaq with him telling a lot about his life. It’s excellent.

I enjoy your channel and I pretty much never comment but this needs to be said…you refusing to say “Stoner” when talking about John Williams masterpiece is absolutely ridiculous. All because you’re worried about the “algorithm”? Really dude? Disrespecting an author like that so you can make sure your clicks and views stay healthy is unbelievably absurd and narcissistic. Talk about having your priorities in the wrong place. The obsession for clicks, likes, and followers has gotten to embarrassing and unhealthy levels.

@@blackveilkirby Well......I live with my wife. And 90% of the time shes not home....even though shes at home ( reading ) ! Like carrying on a conversation with a zombie. I dont mean that jokingly !!!! The truth is...... she lives in another world then the real world right in front of her ! She spent 6 hours per day this last week.....reading. Thats a true sickness ! I spend 10 hours a day working 7 days a week on my dairy farm. Connected with the real world.... crops.... mechanics .....welding.. building equipment.... cutting fire wood.... plumbing where needed.... fence building... While my wife is in the house reading. And she complains about her health issues.....being too fat. Then...... she askes......why dont you ever talk to me anymore ???? Why dont you ever touch me anymore ??? Fact is theres more satisfaction with farming then her. First hand experience with reading !
