BRStv - Saltwater Aquariums & Reef Tanks

9 жыл бұрын

It's Week 5 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are plumbing the #BRS160! This week we are going to talk about the four types of overflows, give you some tips on installing a custom overflow including drilling the glass, various plumbing pieces, return pumps and then plumb our Reef Savvy Ghost Overflow to the sump.
An overflow is used to get water from the aquarium safely down to the sump and they come in a few different types. Your typical reef ready tank comes with an overflow already installed, you can buy a hang on overflow or install a custom overflow for standard or non-reef ready tanks.
There are three main ways to plumb your overflow, all of which are designed to help make it silent, safe and prevent gurgling. All three are named after the reefer who made it popular with the Durso, Herbie and Bean Animal.
The Durso standpipe uses a single overflow standpipe with a vent hole and adjustable air valve in the top. This allows you to fine tune a small amount of air into the overflow. Without the air vent the pipe would pull a full siphon which will continually start and stop with a ton of really loud gurgling.
Hobbyists have worked to further improve on that to make it safer and even quieter with the Herbie overflow . The Herbie uses two overflows; a primary and an emergency. Rather than use air to control the water like the Durso does it uses a gate valve to fine tine the flow of water to a complete siphon with no air getting sucked in which basically makes it completely silent. The second emergency overflow is required just in case something like a fish, snail or chunk of algae gets sucked into the main overflow and reduces flow.
To step that up one more notch the bean animal combines both of these together to achieve something that is ultra silent , ultra safe and really easy to tune. The bean animal uses a gate valve on the primary overflow, a secondary stability overflow with a hole drilled in it which is capable of accounting for small fluctuations in water flow while never creating a full siphon, and an emergency overflow which will handle the water it something happens to the other two. The bean animal is really the gold standard these days and what most of us want to use if we can.

Going back I would change out the rigid braided tubing for PVC. I think I was just very excited in the beginning and it seemed like the easiest option. Using soft black tubing as a return hose was my saving grace. It's so soft, maliable and easy to work with. PVC tubing is definately way more aesthetically pleasing. Also making a note of the Bean Animal 4:50, I come back often and I have drilled my own tanks in the past a lot. I've always planned on drilling out something big, but this makes me feel like I could do it in the most ideal way.

Great work guys. I laugh every time I watch some of your older videos, needless to say they've come along way :) information has always been great though. Just drilled my 75-P ADA tank with your hole saws and drill guide. The guide def has some wobble in it but helps out tremendously. It took forever!! Ridiculously long. Others mentioned 20-30mins per hole, try over an hour on each. That's a long time to be stressing. Luckily Had plenty lot of vodka on hand. In the end clean perfect holes. Used a 60mm and 30mm. Keep up the good videos. I worked in the feature film industry for a long time and BRS could totally make a nice short film about the love of reefing. Similar to Kessil's latest. Holla if you'd like to ever entertain the idea.

Love the plumbing set-up and will be using a similar set-up for a future reef aquarium I'm planning. I'm a bit confused though with the three valve manifold in the return lines. Are those for inputs from something like a media reactor? And if that's the case, won't the higher pressure from the larger return pump force the return flow out those valves and into the media reactor in the reverse direction. Maybe I just need to keep watching and see what you do with those inputs...

We are about at the same stage, im still waiting for my 72x20x16 smoke synergy sump to come in. I just finished cleaning out the pukani you guys sent me, I gave it a good bleach soak. I went with pac sun diuna 10x80w t5 lamp with 3 radions in the rear over a 6'x3'x27" 300g tank. I might have to pick up one of those ecotech returns as well. Looks like the drain lines coming from the bulkheads are smaller than the horizontal pipe runs going to the sump. Is this so? I have a tank drilled for one inch abs bulkheads but my sump has 11/2 bulkheads for the drain lines. Is there anything wrong with using the 1 1/2 bulkheads or should I use reducers on the bulkheads to keep all my drain pipes the same size. Going with the Bean Animal overflow system. Thanks

Tip when drilling a glass tank not mentioned in the video. If at all possible, drill from the inside -> out. The side you start drilling from will have the smoothest possible surface to seal against. The side you are drilling towards can sometime break off when there is only a 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch left to drill through. If this happens it can leave a cupped out chip right at the edge of the hole that will never seal properly against a bulk head fitting gasket. Been there done that.
@SilverstateHobbies
@SilverstateHobbies 9 жыл бұрын
***** I drill outside in but put painters tape inside and if you go slow enough, virtually no chipout remains inside
@sugershakify
@sugershakify 9 жыл бұрын
***** Agreed guys, slow and steady. I will still stand by my recommendation. If space allows try and drill from inside to outside. Not always possible, especially on smaller "40 breeder" tanks, but worth the effort. I've drilled probably a dozen different tanks in my time and it is beyond frustrating to drill a perfectly good hole only to have it chip out on the last millimeter. I now clamp a small piece of wood on the back side of the glass when drilling to support it when punching through. Remember everyone ..... you're not "cutting" or "drilling" through the glass. You're "grinding" through the glass. Give the bit time to grind through 100% of the glass and don't get impatient at the end.

Not sure if you guys answer questions here but it looks like your 160 gallon manifold is 1 inch hard plumbing, but you reduce it to 3/4" hard plumbing for the return ends why? Also the silicon soft tubing for vibration reduction at the start of the pump is a great idea. Just curious there as well why it isn't 1 inch? Just trying to learn why people do what they do. I figured reducing the tubing and return piping would cause more pipe resistance lowering water flow?
