I am based out of LA and despite our company and my team being in a hybrid (remote, in office) model, I really enjoy going into the office! 🌊 Hi everyone! I'm Mika Kim and I'm currently a senior software engineer at a FAANG company! In my prior life I used to be a consultant at Deloitte. I created this youtube channel to share my experiences from the tech industry, and consulting. I used to and still use youtube a LOT to gain info on fields of interests and I hope these videos do the same for you too! 😊

Nice vlogging Mika! Do you have any suggestions on resume building to jump from Big 4 Consulting (PwC and Deloitte) to big tech/FAANG/MAANG? I realised that most of the times I get filtered out in the resume stage for the software engineering roles (that is partly because while I have a CS degree, most of my experience has been in Data/BI analyst or Data engineering type of projects) and never really get to follow up stage. I followed a couple of different resume templates but seems like they aren't ideal. Would love to hear from you if you have any suggestions!! Thank youu Edit: It is out already :D

Hey Mika I know you used to work in consulting and now you are a software engineer at Fanng. I am a fresh grad just joined Deloitte consulting as a BTA couple months ago. I don't know if you have an international background, but Deloitte's policy is not very friendly for international students, so I am thinking about changing my career into tech. 1) How did you balance your time between consulting work and preparing for tech interviews? 2) What made you decide to become a software engineer, instead of other profession, eg. UX or data scientist? My major was management information systems, so I know a bit of tech in all aspects but not very coding savvy. Really would appreciate any advice!!

Hey! Honestly prepping for job interviews while juggling work was really hard. I had to take some PTO to go attend interviews and also to study when I felt like I had no time. I decided to be a SWE because I already had some background in coding and it interested me the most out of the other disciplines. If you plan on changing your career to tech, you should focus on what role interests you the most (whether it's engineering, data science, design etc) and then hone in on the skillset needed for that role (i.e. coding,. data analytics(also some coding), building a design portfolio etc). When tech companies hire, the reality is they want someone that can perform that skillset and not just a generalist. It will take some time but you have to be patient to build up those skillsets! :)

Any tips for preparation for FAANG companies?

Honestly FAANG interviews aren’t largely different from the standard tech interviews, so prep for leetcode, some kind of system design and i tell this to everyone but don’t skimp out on prepping for behaviorals! Interviewers can tell when you have put in a lot of thought into this section or if you are just fumbling on the spot and often times this section is where a lot of decisions for hire/no hire happens.
