I’m starting my graphic design program next month and I’m starting to get really nervous that I’m not gonna be “creative enough” for the program lol.... do you have any tips or insight for that 🥺
@purple-flowers4 жыл бұрын
I can only attest to my experience at art school. But here is my experience: So I've always been someone who's *created* things but I was never one of the "art kids" in grade school. the people who took every art class, went to art club, etc... I instead pursued art on the side and in my own way. Even as a little kid I just dicked around on MS Paint. When I got to actual art school I was so completely anxious as my formal artistic education consisted of 2 digital design classes that were about as intensive as sitting us down in front of photoshop and made to follow written instructions step by step. To say the least it was not about being creative or doing creative things. I was surprised that I even got into an actual, reputable, pretentious-top-ten-internationally recognized-blah-blah-blah art school, not some state school, or general university, but as my excitement wore off I was genuinely worried that I wouldn't be creative or talented enough to succeed in art school, even in graphic design. (Even though now I'm also minoring in fine art). My anxiety was heightened when my art school had me join an incoming students facebook group, and I joined a discord server for incoming students too. I was blasted in the face with all these crazy creative amazing designs and drawings and fashion pieces and sculptures that were quite frankly way above my skill level. I saw these types of videos of "what art school is like" or "types of artists in art school" and it was even more stress added onto it. For months I agonized over not being a good enough artist and designer for art school. But then I got to art school. A quote by the artist Cuck Close perfectly sums up what art school is like: "amateurs get inspired, the rest of us just get to work" in art school you aren't afforded the time to sit around and get inspired, and in studio classes, projects ARE your grade. It was incredibly stressful at first, but it helped me realize something important about being "creative." Your creativity is not some random amount assigned to you at birth, but it is a skill that you work and develop on. If you keep working on it, it'll get stronger and easier to do creative things. If you neglect it, it'll get harder to think creatively. Much of the first year of art school is being tossed into the crucible to rewire your brain to live and breathe creativity. It'll be hard, but it is hard for everyone. Everyone comes from different creative backgrounds, but that's what makes art school so useful, you'll be surrounded by people with different views. And while I can't really give you any insight into what your exact program is like, I can share some advice that I wish I had as an incoming art student to help grow my creativity: 1) consume. Consume everything that you come across, read books, watch movies and tv shows, look at street signs and package labels. Look at how they are made, if you like something, ask yourself why? Look at design of everything from instagram posts to billboards, try to figure out what they did, why they did it, and if it works. Take pictures of things that you think work and save it. You can see in the video that she makes a mood board, it is a collection of things that fit within the style or "mood" of her project. If you are constantly looking and consuming and analyzing design you'll pick up on things that you can apply to your own work. 2) draw, and draw from real things, not pictures. When you draw something, you look at it in a different way, you process it on a fundamental level. Beng able to think about things like that is an invaluable skill and helps you be creative 3) talk to people about art and design. Engaging with other people (and I have severe agoraphobia and social anxiety so don't give me bullshit about that. If I can do it, you can too) about your work and theirs is the cornerstone of the design world, it helps to foster creativity on your own. 4) let yourself fall in love with the creative process. If you don't love what you're doing, don't do it. That's why you chose design as a field anyways. It's a lot of work for very little money, if you didn't love it, you should become a lawyer or engineer or gone to trade school. Art isn't for the people who are "somewhat interested." Many of my peers focus so much on learning the technical skills, that they forget why they do it in the first place and burn out. We have kids drop out because they fell out of love with art. If you want to be constantly creative, make things that you love, that you are passionate about. The best thing about art school is that the projects are incredibly flexible. You can make almost every project about something that you care about. You aren't gonna love everything, and it's actual work, but spend time working on things that fulfill you. I personally get excited about the projects that I get assigned, because I *love it* and that's because I make it that way. 5) take breaks. Being creative is an emptying process, you need time to fill it up before you can get creative again. Are there gonna be times when you have 3 assignments due in a week and you just gotta get it done? Yeah, but if you really are drained, talk with your professors. Art professors are artists too, they know what it is like. They've been working in the industry for years, and probably still do. They'll understand and help you get back on your feet. Most schools offer therapy services, take advantage of it. Even if you don't have a mental illness, getting the old brain a tune up every month is important. If you only wait for your car to break down before taking it to the mechanic, the car will break down more often and much more serious problems will occur. If you take your car in for regular tune ups, then you will run smoother and have less problems with your car. Same thing goes for the brain. I hope this helped, if you need any advice or anything just drop a comment below and I'll make sure to respond to anything.

@@purple-flowers thank you very much. I want to be graphic designer but I don't know if I'll be creative enough to get admission in my favourite college in India. I love to watch movies and read books. I'm also good at painting and drawing(I think). Do you think I will succeed as graphic designer? Because I'm not much emotional person and I care about only one thing that is my cat. Also I haven't practiced drawing much. Whenever I draw something, people ask me "is it even a painting? What thing is it?"
@purple-flowers4 жыл бұрын
@@ThePotterWasp I don't know much about the admission process in india, but in the US the essay and grades are also important, not just the portfolio. I had the same worries about getting into my college, because they were very "prestigious" but what I did was I visited the school as a highschool student and made an appointment with the admissions counselor. She helped me with all my questions and she is the reason I got into my college at all. Also I ended up not going to my #1 college, but my #2 college which is still good, but not like "top five in the country good" more like "top 15." And even then a lot of schools have really good design programs. About the drawing thing, I would say that you should definitely practice drawing, but when you get to college they'll teach you from the basics. The "academic" drawing method is very different from most of the methods they teach you in grade school, or people who learn on their own. And don't let people talk like that to you, you're learning and they should understand that. It's a process and it takes time and work to develop it. I'm not an amazing drawer, and I still have a lot of work to do, but that's okay because I'm still working on it. But like I said, my advice is to talk with the people at the colleges that you want to go to. Ask them lots of questions and take their advice. Most colleges *want* you to go to their school, so they want to help you get into their school too. I wish you lots of luck, and I'm sure you're going to be an amazing designer and be successful in art school!

@@purple-flowers I am really grateful for your support and guidance. The college I want to get in is India's no.1 college for graphic design and it's fee's are also affordable for my family. My situation is do or die. But I'm very hopeful and I'll do whatever it is necessary to achieve my goal. If I would not get admission in that college then I'll have to get degree in science. I'm smart enough to do so but I don't want to. Well, it's been nice to talk with someone knowledgeable on KZfaq and thanks again for spending your time to guide some completely stranger. And please ignore if my spelling and grammar is incorrect. Have a great life 💕

@@ThePotterWasp Which school (collage) are you planning to go to? I'm an Indian too but currently in America for so many years. I did my game design here and I'm really interested in Graphic Design, I think any design class will def give you the right amount of actual exercises to get you going. When I did my undergrad (Bachelors) in India, I was exercised with so many assignments that I thought "WTF is this?" but now I really appreciate as to why it was given, (my professors were crazy and hard on all of us) and dont give a feck about grades, Yes I know that's some important crap at our place but dont, its not exactly that useful in the long run, instead try to gain as much knowledge as you can.. Try and maintain the rapport with the professors / teachers and seniors at the collage, it'll be very surprising how far you can go with that. Try and do some freelancing on weekends and ask your friends if you can make some custom greetings or photo edits for them (for free) and it'll help in your practice for the Adobe tools. Then you go to Linked In and get some industry people and connect with them, follow them & the company.. Get your internship thing sorted out and by the time you get to internship year (usually 3-6 month before end exams and graduation) you'll have all industry exp from freelance, helping friends & family. Which is a great help in landing that job! I didnt network much (which I regret) but I did attend to many social events that my University offered in America and I went to each and every seminar (even in India) whether it related to me or not.. (It helps) and dont worry, you will get enough time to mingle with friends... Honestly the things I just said are those that I didnt do (like early freelancing) and planning (even though it seems like a drag) is important. So I hope my experience will be of help to you. If you plan to study in America for masters or any, please do so after you gain some industry experience (which is what I didnt do and immediately got into masters after my bachelors graduation). Good luck and please make sure your parents are happy with it too (I was lucky enough that my parents gave me 5 years of time to do whatever I want with my passion for games) so I wont assume if your family can or cant support. Never listen to any friends who laugh or go bragging on you, 2 years down the road, no one will even care to talk.. So dont focus on Long term friendship BS like that, it doesnt exist and keep focus on career (but have some fun going out sometimes, those memories wont come back)......

Same! I'm an engineering student too. 2nd year of Chemical engineering. I don't think engineering is for me. Never dreaming, imagine or cross my mind to be an engineer. I don't feel happy too. I love photography but someone said rather than photography, it's better take graphic design bcs I will learn about editing, marketing and photography too! So I'm thinking switching course from chemical engineering to graphic design. I know this is not easy too. But it's better because I have interest and love creative design. Even though I'm not creative enough plus not good at drawing. I'm willing to start from zero and work hard rather than graduate in engineering degree and not using it. I still have 2 years for my engineering degree and I don't think it's too late to switch to graphic design right? I can't continue with chemical engineering. It's too hard. Plus I don't have interest in it. I love and respect the output & result that can be done by engineers. But i never imagine myself do the same thing in the future. Btw I'm from Malaysia. I'm a multimedia student and randomly clicked on this video bc I was curious. I also have design class and 3D class and I think it's pretty similar but not as advanced as your classes. I do love how you showed the actual process of your projects and the results of them, they're amazing designs btw. Just wow. So thank you for making this video ^_^

I'm currently an animation student. And completely understand the 3am sleep schedule. And the constant research on designs . I found out real quick that graphic design and animation have some similarities..but are complete opposites. Thanks for this video. Really brought some sanity to my life.

Watching this kind of makes me miss design school, so many of your struggles are so relatable (I did interior design) from concept development, to prototyping, design development and so forth. I always find it interesting to see other people's process, thanks for sharing Dena! 😄

I can relate to this so much!! So many people think art majors of any kind are just losers who need to try and major in something easy and pass! Well... IT IS NOT EASY! It’s a lot of work and time that needs to be put in to EVERYTHING! The teachers don’t care how much other stuff you have to do in classes or life, they expect twice as much time put towards your projects, as the class time which is usually 2 hours long!

I really enjoyed this video and it gave me a bit of insight towards something I might expect as an art student. I'll be going to college for Graphic Design in the Fall (hopefully Corona doesn't hinder that) anyway I'll definitely be watching more of your stuff :3 (btw I enjoyed seeing your prosses of how you get your ideas down, and also your work ^u^)

I don´t think anyone cares but I´m gonna write it anyways to help my anxiety... I´m actually watcing like a bunch of videos about graphic design because I was like "sure" that that was what I'm going to study, so when I went with my career counselor she ask me a bunch of questions that actually make me realized that I didn´t know a thing about gd so that´s how I ended up here, in this video, because she left me as homework to investigate this career and another one that is in my options. But now I´m super worried and hella scared about being creative enough to become a gd and seeing that this careers leaves a looot of homework with limited time, about a lot of different things (my heart just dropped to the floor when i saw her 3D project, I mean.. how the hell did she do that) and that made me think... am I good enough? If you have any tips I´ll be glad to read them and also you can tell me your story..... And even if you kind of passed through this or feel the same you can also share it

Liliane nala, I have anxiety like that all the time. I used to have it almost every night, but it got better when I told my sister. We made a plan for how I was going to do things, what I’m supposed to learn to help myself, and what to do if I failed. My family has always been straightforward, we never sugarcoated anything. I think the best course of action for you and me with anxiety about being good enough or just our future, is to make a plan. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m sure you still have time to learn. Brainstorm, and experiment different possible topics, not just art. I don’t know if this helped, but my sister always said, “ if you failed at this, then you could always join the beauty industry. There are always people who want to look prettier.” Good luck, and try to stay positive! Watch cat videos or something!

As a past graphic design student, I can say that while it is a lot of work, it's not really more work than any other professional career. It's actually less about creativity and more about efficiency. My prof used to tell me that it's better to think about projects as puzzles to find solutions to rather than things you have to materialize out of a cloud of pure creativity. For example, we were told to make a restaurant logo and full menu. We were taught that warm colors like yellows and reds make people think of food, so those are the colors I picked. As for layout and design, typically you want a design that is simple and effective at communicating what you want, so there's less empty space to worry than you might think. When you know the theories, everything becomes much easier to grasp and design is like a fun puzzle. 3D boxes are hard too, don't get me wrong, but much more time brainstorming and talking with fellow artists goes into it than you think. A good team will give you valuable feedback and solutions, so it seems more intimidating than it is, really. Anyway, no matter what you pick, I wish you well. Career choices are tough, but if you're not sure maybe take just a single class here or there or get a tech degree. I also suffer from anxiety, so your comment hit me hard.

Sorry for my bad english. I think if you really really wanna do it, then do it. It's not about skills or anything, we're all beginners. I believe if that's what you really really wanna do, you'll enjoy every moment of it. I'm myself is a graphic design student and i don't know anything about graphic design at all that time. But of course we learned about this and that, so now we know.. sure there will be a lot of tasks that might get you stress enough, but again if you really really wanna do it, i believe you'll enjoy it. So, don't be scared... I hope you take your time to think about it and find your best decision :) good luck !

Yeah I always wonder, how do I know if this the better way to waste my time, my force? Will I be able to find a job that will help to earn enough money for the living? If not how much time will it take? Even though I do research I never will know for sure. Sometimes I really beleive that it's better to choose what others want you to choose (chemistry in my case). But my friend said me once "life is too short to work on something that you're not at least interested in, if it's hard then try to play it smarter"

Hello, GD student here. Started 4 weeks ago. I'm not good at drawing at all, never did creative things. Honestly I surprised myself alot how I improved in 4 weeks. Learned to work with illustrator, learned how to brainstorm and sketch concepts. Then work the best ones out in illustrator and deliver them. Made me wlneer where I would be in 3 years at this pace. I'm having fun, also stress but I guess that's part of GD. If you're interested in it just go for it.

I have seen a lot of Graphic Design Students use the touch pad instead of a tablet or a mouse. I would recommend to practice using a tablet (Wacom Intuos) or at least a mouse. It will greatly enhance your designs. For my personally the Wacom Intuos took my design to the next level. Good luck!

It's so crazy how different the Graphic Design study is in your country. In my country we sometimes don't even have the time to make a prototype since we are sometimes only given 8 hours to make a full branding, ad campaign etc. In that time i can only make a rough sketch for my concept/prototype. Truly sucks.
