I remember hearing K. Deep singing "Ik kudi jihda naam muhabbat" at PEC Chandigarh Lohri functions. And get this, one time even from the great one himself, when he was invited over to PEC for a function, circa 1971. There was a big buzz going around that Shiv Kumar is going to come today, I was perhaps 10 or 11. But I distinctly remember Shiv, in black achkan, singing this poem, raising his arm at times. The audience was as if in a trance - they had realized that this was a brush with history.

ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਫ਼ਲ ਮਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸੱਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਹੀ ਦੀ ਕਿੱਕਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਲੀ “ ਦੀ ਤਸਬੀਹ ਦੇਣ ਤੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ । ਰੋਹੀ ਦੀ ਕਿੱਕਰ ਦਾ ਸੱਕ ਵਾਕਿਆ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਛੌਰਾ ਹਰਾ ਤੇ ਤਿੱਖੀ ਧੁੱਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੰਗ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਵਾਹ ਭਾਊ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਜੁਵਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ।

ਬਿਰਹਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਬਟਾਲਵੀ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਪੱਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੀਮਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਲਮ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਪੱਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਵੀ ਸਨ।

ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਨੰਦ ਆਇਆ। ਸ਼ਿਵ ਇਕ ਲਾਸਾਨੀ ਕਵੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਣਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਗ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ।
