Covid-19: Do many people have pre-existing immunity?
www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m...
Studies that have documented SARS-CoV-2 reactive T cells
20% to 50% of people with no known exposure to the virus
US, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, UK, Sweden
Alessandro Sette, (immunologist, La Jolla Institute for Immunology in California)
At this point there are a number of studies that are seeing this reactivity in different continents, different labs.
As a scientist you know that is a hallmark of something that has a very strong footing
Common cold viruses, animal coronaviruses
Possible overall reduced population susceptibility
New York, London, and Stockholm
Have not reverted to the old curve with lockdown restrictions
Ongoing distancing measures
Memory T cells
Sweden, Family members of patients with confirmed covid-19
T cell responses found in those who were seronegative or asymptomatic
While around 60% of family members produced antibodies
90% had T cell responses
T cells were found in SARS patients 17 years after infection
Swine flu, H1N1
Pre-existing reactive T cells had clinically milder disease
Required prospective studies
Mapping pre-existing reactivity to clinical outcomes
Not being done in the placebo arm of the vaccine studies

@yolo oloy I disagree. Did you listen to him talking about the cytotoxic T cells? He's saying there's more immunity in many populations than is commonly known.. that's not good for vaccine manufacturers as it makes a vaccine really unnecessary, especially as by the time one is available for the masses, winter will be over and so will the virus. This isn't the narrative that the Pharma driven agenda of msm wants at all!!

But most honours are down to government recommendations, and I doubt that any of the retards in Downing Street watch these videos. If they did they would hate them because, unlike the BBC, they don't suppress the good news and go out of their way to scare people shitless. I understand Dr. John's comment about anarchy. However if their was a cellar under the cabinet room, and a latter day Guy Fawkes, I suspect that a substantial fraction of the UK population would be very keen to make contributions to the cost of the gunpowder.

Ever considered that "experts" (at least some) suggested masks, but 'politicians' who had let stocks fall to now apparently dangerous levels, were more concerned about their political reputation than public safety, so suggested they weren't needed, then "only for front line workers" then miraculously, as they became available, masks *were* found to be effective? Of course, by that time much damage was done, not only by increased spread, but by the seed sown among those who "now know they don't work".

@@Campbellteaching Can you please take a look at sweden?? You havnt made a video on them for quiet a while, Seem like sweden might of achieved herd immunity. Possible there could be a second wave but i doubt it. But if there is, It would be much less serious. Sweden didnt lock down didnt close everything down, left everything open, no mask mandate, They have a population of 11 million. Less than 6000 dead. Thats a fatality rate of 0.05%. Why your not looking more at Sweden and praising there handling of this i am not sure. Is that not a good result, without closing schools and stoping elective surgeries, substance abuse. @@snowbird6855 Hi christine, I explained it in my message. Sweden have a population of about 11.5 million. Sweden didnt lockdown, Didnt close schools or business. Didnt wear masks. Well at least didnt mandate masks. They are not getting any excess deaths and no deaths from cv 19 to speak of. So assuming theres not or a very small second wave. Sweden has achieved herd immunity. So we can work out the fatality rate. If there is 6000 deaths out of 11.5 million. That is about 0.05% of their population died from cv19. Hope that helps

Hi, I am a nurse in the UK and have had COVID 19. I became unwell on 27th March, and I was off work for 7 weeks in total. I have antibodies and I'm involved in the Siren Study, I have a swab taken for COVID and blood taken for antibodies every 2 weeks, myself and many of my colleagues have been COVID negative still antibody positive. I listen to you whenever I can, you taught nurses for 27 years and are still teaching them now. Thank you for guiding me to the research, and for your informative and reasonable coverage of this pandemic

Firstly thanks for all your work during this pandemic 😊 I have zero expertise but is what you are saying regarding testing COVID negative still antibody positive mean you do not have virus at present from blood sample but you do have evidence of immune cells to Covid? If so I thought that stopped after 5 or 6 weeks when T cells learnt and stored information for future use. Is it likely given your work you being exposed to Covid19 frequently? Sorry my comment isn’t articulate I’m an Arts major 😂😂😂 take care and thank you
@DavidGetling
@DavidGetling 3 жыл бұрын
Despite you now being immune, I bet you are still being forced to wear masks and visors, when they are totally unnecessary for both you and your patients' safety. This kind of nonsense needs to end. However, I strongly suspect that maximum mask visibility is a major part of the government's fear mongering strategy. There are probably now about 20 million people in the UK who could dance naked up and down a ward packed full of covid-19 patients (if one still exists), at no risk to themselves. I get the very strong impression that there are an awful lot of doctors out there now privately (as they want to keep their jobs) saying that the reaction to covid-19 for the past few months has been way OTT. In case you missed it a few weeks ago, here's my parody on Boris. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLB_n6qVpqzecWQ.html Sadly, instead of becoming less relevant, it seems to hit closer to home with each passing day.

They had to say that! it was true then, they could not and should not make statements that are not supported by verifiable evidence, bear in mind that what they did say is not the same as saying that it could not happen, in fact even now the levels of spread all over the world make it very clear that direct airborne transmission, if it happens at all, does not happen enough to be a significant factor in epidemic spread. It is quite important to understand clearly the difference between epidemic control and disease elimination!. Disease elimination requires the rigorous application of all and every precaution until the disease is gone, not something that any health care personnel will advocate!, the social cost is far too high! and unenforceable anyway!. Epidemic control on the other hand only needs to have the top ranking transmission route obstructed for long enough for the rate of spreading to be kept below whatever level amounts to increasing numbers of cases, as soon as the number of new cases falls below increase levels, do remember that not all infected people pass it on, many asymptomatic case will show a positive test but never carry a viral load high enough to infect anyone!. Cheers, Richard.

Mask wearing: here in China (I'm in Changsha, 300 km S of Wuhan) we've been wearing masks since the Spring Festival (24 January). For 2-3 weeks they were difficult to buy and pharmacies quickly ran out once they got supplies. They became readily available about mid-February, available initially in limited numbers based on your ID/passport number. EVERYBODY wore them. ALL SHOPS required them. ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORT required them. (Even the subways right now still require them and still check temperatures before entering even though we've not had any new infections for 4 months). I NEVER heard any complaints about mask-wearing. In the cities nearly everybody lives in a tower block. Anyone returning to their home had their temperature checked. My step-daughter's take-away bubble teashops had mandatory mask requirements, temperature checking, 2m distancing queues; staff had their temperatures logged 3 times a day. Deliveries were made without face-to-face contact; (contact being done by phone/WeChat app). Regions of the city had movement restrictions to ensure that all entering had temperature checks.

This hospitalisation statistic seems to be much more important than counting cases as it is a better measure of the severity of the disease and should be compared with similar epidemics like flu, not that I think this is “just the flu” of course, but if hospitalisation levels are similar then should we be treating it more like flu now that we know so much more about it (remembering that in January, looking at China, it looked like the end of the world but that now seems an over statement)

Tricky, there is a lag of three or four weeks from rising cases to hospitalisations and deaths to see a pattern. On an infection fatality rate point it is more deadly than seasonal flu, between 3 and 10 times more deadly. Much higher in the over 50's and infirm. We also have a quadrivalent or trivalent vaccine for seasonal flu that helps reduce the hospitalisations and deaths. We don't have a vaccine for SARS-Cov-II. China achieved a halt to the spread (as fr as they are telling us) by locking down half the country - 600,000,000 people for months, sanitising everything, contact tracing and enforcing quarantine and mask wearing. They also stopped international flights leaving and entering China. They are very hot on stamping on any new outbreaks. They may not be totally honest in reporting the figures.

Hi Tuppy, from the beginning it has been clear that reports of new cases are related to the number of tests being carried out and are only a vague guide to what is happening, in the early days Iceland was testing by far the highest percentage of their population and any comparison with the numbers from other places did show a very significant difference between cases and deaths, in terms of rates. At the time I was not at all sure that this might be because they were reporting to a different protocol!, it now seems more clear but we still do not know for sure exactly how their health service decides 'cause of death', if that is radically different!. Your suggestion that the hospitalisation numbers are a lot more informative, but again only for comparative purposes, compare numbers now with numbers from some other time, any differences do not tells us why something is going on, just that there is something that does not 'fit' and deserves closer scrutiny. Actually this is all we ever get from just numbers, they tell us where and what to look at!, it is that follow up investigation that is so lacking, at least in part because it 'costs' a great deal of money and has no prospect of generating any profits!. There was never any real doubt that the early hysterical reactions were ill-founded, I am sad to say that this is 'normal' human behaviour that our public services and government should be prepared for not also fall victim to. Your suggestion that we should be dealing with this just as we do seasonal 'flu is on the right lines!, the only measures that can be effective are the ones that make good clear sense to the people that have to apply them, this can never apply to anyone who is not infected or in close contact with infected people!. Cheers, Richard.

@@richardharvey1732 "There was never any real doubt that the early hysterical reactions were ill-founded" ... nope, wrong, sorry. We did not know what this virus could do or how far it would spread at the beginning in January ...just 291 cases reported in Wuhan ...but previous work on SARS and MERS suggested that a virus of this type could have a fatality rate of 10 to 30%. If the virus got out of China it could kill potentially kill over 2 billion people. By February 20th (28 days later- yes like the film) there were about 75,000 reported cases flooding into Wuhan hospitals. The Chinese built port-a-hospitals in 10 days for thousands. Reports of Chinese collapsing and dying on the streets trying to get to a hospital. Faced with that potential apocalyptic scenario and no access to China to verify, governments that now have low case and death rates acted quickly and followed China's lead with lockdowns, flight bans and testing. Those that did not act until the WHO declared a pandemic suffered, they suffered even more when they tried to open up their economies too early. Ok, mostly the over 65's were dying and you could argue (callously) that they are expendable and should just have been boarded up in their homes and care homes to die while the younger people went about their normal daily business. I am sure this will be debated hotly in the months and years to come. Save lives or save the economy ? We do have to work this out because the next pandemic could be just around the corner. As it is the most recent data suggests an infection fatality rate on average of 0.3% which would equate to about 10 million deaths world wide. However since this will take a while to reach and better treatments are being discovered and a vaccine looks promising I would expect no more that million. The WHO just said they think two million is more than likely as we come up to 1 million deaths. Am I being hysterical ? Well maybe I am 66 years old and I hope to live a little longer.

Thank you Dr. Campbell! When I was five, my mother and I both got polio. Like for many others, the virus never broke out of my gut, so it was a simple "summer flu" and that was that. In my mother, the virus invaded her nervous system and she suffered lifelong disability. I am struck by how similar polio is to SARS-CoV-2. Given that, I am unsatisfied with the binary categorization of potential vaccines as "effective" or not. As far as I am concerned, any virus that substantially reduced the chance of organ damage in an infection would be a huge advance.

Dear John, I am a great enthusiast for dogs. I grew up in a household with terriers, sheepdogs, and even hound puppies [called walking a puppy from the local hunt - albeit that was in the 1960s]. Dogs know me and must think I am a "hot human" as I have never had any dog in sixty years be other than completely friendly - even known aggressive dogs. I am certain that I have been inoculated with all the normal dog diseases! I also have much farming contact with sheep, cattle, poultry, and certainly caught a horrible case of Orff [a sheep skin disease] in the early 1980s. Of course you can get Brucelosis from cattle, and that can be very serious for humans. You do not actually necessarily ever recover from that. It can lead to mental health and depression issues, and one one my friends was a vet. A Brucelosis infected veterinarian with depression from it, who would eventually commit suicide. Tragic. But mostly in my experience, regular contact with animals is good! I have a Labrador friend who regards me as only second in line after her lady owner! When I am in the dog's company, she gives me one hundred per cent attention, at the expense of her proper owner! I am told that I calm the dog for days after a meeting! Best wishes from George

Just a note on mask wearing. The reason countries like the US and UK were so slow to start advocating the benefit of masks was because the supplies of these were so low at the time, there was a real danger that the health services would run out of these if the general public started buying them. Definately a mistake by the gov because it ended up causing mixed messages to the public which has cost lives.

I believe a real pandemic is coming, one that will infect and kill thousands, maybe millions. Bill Gates, the modern prophet of our time, already warned us Covid 19 is just the first pandemic. He also produced a chilling infomercial about mosquitos being the world's deadliest killer, look it up on his KZfaq channel. The same goes for children and testin; from the beginning it was said children seem not to be affected so much so they cant be spreading either so we are focussing only on those adults with symptoms. Funding for Cardiff Firm to Develop New COVID-19 Immunity Test ...If successful, the Simple Cellular Immunity Test (SCIT) can identify the presence of T cells that respond to the virus which causes COVID-19 from a single tube of blood, within 24 hours. This approach has the potential to be more sensitive and more reliable at determining immunity than antibody testing. To verify this, it will be tested on people who have already had the virus and those that have developed antibodies. The test may also be valuable during vaccine development to help identify whether an adequate immune response has been generated to protect people from COVID-19, and for testing how long that immune response remains. businessnewswales.com/funding-for-cardiff-firm-to-develop-new-covid-19-immunity-test/

Now really I know better than to respond to some kinds of commenters but somewhere there is this stubborn hope that people can be reasonable under stress and all this is certainly causing stress in a lot of people but to anyone who recognizes themselves in having mentioned things like its only the flu or say things like how many people die in traffic accidents; in this country last year 670 people died from traffic accidents and the cars we buy have several thousand € worth of equipment on board to keep those numbers as low as they are like seat belts airbags crumple zones etc and to be allowed to drive we take rather expensive training and certification. We suffered 10-20x those number of deaths from this virus in a period of around three months. Try to be reasonable people and stop turning this into some sort of personal crusade to basically tell people to stop wearing seatbelts pay attention to traffic lights or give the right of way where required.
