I don’t even know why it made me so happy to see you back, even if temporarily! You do so much more than review books. Your humor, enthusiasm and eclectic taste inspires the joy of reading, the comfort of reading, and the adventure of reading. You’re a treasure. Be well. PS Good to see Roger back!

An unexpected treat!!!! A lot of people don't like Zane Grey's long descriptions on the backdrop (I'm told)....... but people at the time loved it because long distance travel was much more difficult than current day, and ZG's descriptions almost served as a travel log!!

Very happy to see you back. When you gave your reason for not being around for a while it kind of took the fun out of June on the Range. I have read Louis L'Amour's THE LONESOME GODS which was very good. Then I started reading short stories in THE KILLERS edited by Peter Dawson. Then I watched your announcement and have not picked it up again. I had THE LOST WAGON TRAIN right next to the bed and it is still there. Perhaps now I will return to THE KILLERS. Tanks for posting. Your posting is one of the first I look for in the morning.

The only Clair Huffaker book I've read is The Cowboy and The Cossack which I think highly of. It's about a group of cowboys hired to drive cattle in Russia. It is probably the second best trail drive novel I've read behind Lonesome Dove. Huffaker also wrote for a lot of those old Western tv shows. I remember an episode of the Virginian called "The Hero" which was really good. (It's on Prime and Freevee)

I imagine that a lot of writers in the 20s, 30s and 40s didn't bother about internal continuity for their characters; the impetus was to write and sell. REH neatly avoided the issue by picking different points in Conan's life in which to set his stories and just making up new settings and supporting characters as he went. Frenz has toned down the Jack Kirby and is drawing more like himself, that is, like Sal Buscema - Michael, I love the way you put that. I hope you return to us sooner rather than later. This surprise video has brought me much joy.

Hey Michael the most dapper man on book tube, so glad to see for back for even a little bit. I missed you, always interesting episodes and great ideas for books to put on my TBR list. You look in good health and spirits. Just do what you can, don't worry about us. Your health is your most important concern. So if you have to take a few weeks off no worries. All the best to you. I always wondered - so much of the mayhem and chaos could've been avoided in the Thor stories, if only Odin had been awake half the time. I've been reading every Incredible Hulk issue from the beginning, about to start the legendary Peter David run next.

Ooo the MKV Newsletter has arrived, a hello and an update from Stately Vaughan Manor while on hiatus.. you both look well, lovely surprise. Devouring Thor like a ravenous Volstagg, impressive, I like the Ron Frenz art too, not a fan of secret identities returning either. Speaking of Audie Murphy, Tumbleweed was on last week, I'd not seen that western in a few years. Not much to report here, finished Swamp Thing Bronze Age volume 2, next up my June on the Range comicbook pick, the second volume of vintage wild west tales featuring the original 1950s Ghost Rider.

Lovely to see you Michael. 😊 Unexpected and very welcome! 😊 I agree that Dr Pulaski was a much maligned character. Unfortunately much of that was due to in-house production politics aimed at getting Gates McFadden back on the rosta. That party faction could not target such a talented actress as Diana Mulduar so they went for the production values on the character itself. It was an underhanded way to get McFadden back.

I don't read as many westerns as I used to but thoroughly enjoy those written by Joe R. Lansdale. For June On The Range though, I've just finished and enjoyed Gone To Texas by Forrest Carter. For thems as don't know, it's the book they filmed as The Outlaw Josey Wales. For the future, I'm going to pick up some Louis L'Amour 😊

First of all, Michael, I would like you to thank Roger for recommending Mark of Zorro. I'm currently listening to the audio version and am loving it! Next, I have found Clair Huffaker to be a consistently good writer. I've read a number of his books and found them to all be good reads. Finally, surprisingly, I don't think I ever read Lost Wagon Train. As I'm a great fan of Grey that is quite shocking. 😉I'll have to correct that situation one of these days. Thanks for the great reviews.

Reading Posse From Hell sent me out buying up all the rest of the Clair Huffaker I could find... which is kinda tough nowdays. Cowboy and the Cossack is a masterpiece. I like Louis L'Amour, but he definitely isn't realistic. His characters are all superhuman and they're all-the-way-good. When he tries to write an anti-hero he just can't do it... he's always gonna make them super-noble, and their "bad"-ness is always pretty mild. Maybe they stole something from a really bad guy or something... never anything really evil.

I read a Zane Grey earlier this month. I forget the title, but it was his second one. What I liked: the Ohio geography. What I didn’t: the rest. I am glad I read it as an Ohioan, but I don’t need to read the rest of his works.

Good to see you MKV! Enjoyed your discussion-- I grew up with Zorro and loved the old TV show back in the day. Interesting that Posse from Hell was written by a woman, how unusual was that in older Westerns? I had a sense that many women (like in some genre fiction) would have assumed a male name to have their works published.
