Kids, its time for a brand new Weekend Wankshop with Uncle Ben Eller! In this lesson, i'm gonna teach you a lick that has stumped many a guitarist... its the sweet wah-soaked lick Slash uses to get into the really burning section of his classic Sweet Child O' Mine solo (Guns & Roses, Appetite for Destruction)!!!! You know exactly what lick i'm talking about. Everybody seems to have "their way" of playing this one, but none i've seen have been exactly it. I went through the audio really carefully and watched some live footage to get more detail on what's happening here, and now you can reap the benefits. Grab a Les Paul, crank up a Marshall, stomp a wah, and get in on this!

I always played it as an ascending minor scale starting on the 3rd string F#. I saw the tab for it, but couldn't understand WHY it was played like that, so it was impossible for me to memorize or work on enough to make smooth. I've never been able to play stuff that didn't make sense to me which is why KZfaq is such a great tool for guitar players now. I learn stuff today I couldn't play 30 years ago no matter how hard I worked on it just because I can see how it was done and how it makes sense.

For years I played this with my cover band - like 10+ years and I always “wung” it after the legato from the 15th to the 12th fret on the high E until it gets to the big bends on the 15th of the B …so it’s just a few notes and they go by so fast nobody would ever know. But now I’m going to relearn this section of the solo the right way haha …thanks Uncle Ben!!

I believe you when you say it's right but it's still a difficult way to play the lick. I am not giving up until I find another way to play it that's mostly correct but that makes a lot more sense (to me). Took me forever but I finally figured out how to do little fighter in a way that made sense and was still note for note accurate So I'm not going to give up. Love this lick but I'm not going to spend a month learning how to play in a style that I don't use for one riff that nobody but me in the bar notices. But thanks for all the work. Even when I try to figure out an alternate way to do it your transcriptions are incredibly helpful and I like the lead lessons as well. I really wish KZfaq was around when I was growing up.

In a similar vein is a lick from The Scorpions - The Sails Of Charon at 01:37. Would love to see something on this. Great lesson by the way, I knew exactly which lick you were talking about from the title!! hahah. So many different tabs of this, and if you try and find a video of Slash playing this lick, 9/10 you will find the camera will move to another person in the band as he starts that lick!!

One "error", Slash plays an Eb at 16th fret second string after the ascending part. Very subtle but makes a difference.

Great lesson, thank you very much! But how to overcome that feeling of: uh oh, here comes that part….here it comes….now! And then f#ck it up anyway, although you can play it fine just on its own? Anyone else knows the feeling I’m talking about (and the mess you make of it)? Does it also have to do with the fact that you have to switch pickups, kick on your wah AND start shredding?

Feel the same way. I can play it pretty cleanly on my own but as soon as i play along with a backing track i fight to get it to speed n make mistakes. Im getting it better but gonna take awhile before i get it clean n fast

Just a mention (I know this vid is very old lol) about the position you say part way through Slash typically being a "3 finger player". If you watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdldppZyzJ7Poo0.html you can see he does play the lick exactly as you do with sliding up with his pinky finger too, I have big hands and I was trying to wrap my head around how he would play it comfortably with only 3 fingers till the higher position unless he also had large hands too lol. Thank you so much for the vid Ben, this lick ran around my head for years about one to get back to.
