Bright Line Eating

19 күн бұрын

If you’re new to the Bright Line community-Welcome! We’ve got hundreds of new people joining us, thanks largely to the Food Revolution Network and my friend Ocean Robbins. We just did an event about how to get weight loss drug results without the drugs, and hundreds of people are starting the Bright Line Eating Boot Camp right now. I’m thinking of you!
I also want to tell our long-time Bright Lifers that I know we have some loose threads to address. I need to give you an update on the International Food Addiction Consensus Conference in London, and also a recap of on On This Bright Day. Stay tuned for those in the coming weeks!
One more housekeeping detail: Bright Line Eating turns ten this summer. We’re going to host a gathering here in Rochester, NY, on Sunday, August 4. Details to come, but just save that date for now!
Today, I want to talk about something I’m going through right now, that may be similar to what others’ internal experiences are as they undertake their Bright journeys.
My daughter Zoe commented recently that she knows it’s time to get up when she hears me scraping my breakfast bowl-to death, loudly. I laughed when she said that, but I was also a little embarrassed. After my breakfast or a salad, I’ll have a spoon handy to scrape all the flavor out of the bowl. It’s Bright food, so it’s not a break, but I don’t feel free when I do it. I feel powerless over it.
This is all about the addiction to quantities, which seems to kick in and grip me at the end of each meal. I felt this way-but even worse-twenty years ago when I started eating Bright. Those last few bites felt like a death, and I was horrified to know that it would be hours before I could eat again.
If you’re new and feel this way, know that the intensity of that experience does pass. Now I don’t care so much when the meal ends, but I do seem to get pretty intense about getting those last licks and morsels. It made me start thinking about power and powerlessness over food, though. I’ve regained my power over food by weighing and measuring it. But I still feel powerless in the last few moments of the meal.
Then I thought about a few years ago when I let go of gaming the system in restaurants and just accepted the Brightest, cleanest meal there. What changed was that I suddenly wanted the freedom, so badly.
So now, I sat where I usually eat my breakfast, looking out at our backyard. And I thought about whether I could find the part of myself that wants to be free of incessantly scraping the bowl. That was hard at first. After a while, though, I found it.
And when I found the part of myself that truly, truly wants to be free of that intense scraping, I invited my higher power in to help. I opened up to grace.
I use the word God, but I’m really speaking about an unknowable essence that I do not understand. An awe-inspiring energy that helps me with my addiction.
It makes me feel like I’m an electric plug that needs power. In my addiction, I don’t have that power. But when I just plug into the outlet, it gives me the power I need. I open myself up to extra power with a plea for help.
And suddenly, I found myself able to put the bowl down without scraping. I felt free and light. The next meal, it happened again. I remembered to say please before each meal and to open myself up to that power. I kept tapping into the part of me that wants that freedom and is willing to coast on that feeling of grace.
I offer this to you if you’re starting your Bright journey, because it is possible to activate a power source that will enable you to have a Bright meal and be satisfied. A mini-awakening or mini-awareness. A spiritual happening. You can do it for the next meal, and the next. The meals turn into days. The days turn into weeks. And suddenly you realize you’re receiving your Bright Transformation.

Susan, I'm just turning 75 and have been aware of you and Bright Line eating since 2014 a year after I went plant based and magically reversed some health issues and lost 50lbs. Yet here I am, like Caroline, still 35lbs over my desired weight and a brain filled with food obsession. I have poo-poo'ed the weighing and measuring and abstaining plan all these years until just recently. I became so worn out from the food chatter in my head that I finally bought all of your books and took the plunge. I must say....weight loss is very slow for me, but Oh My! In just 8 weeks, the peace and calm I have around food is astounding. ❤. Thank you for all that you do to understand and help make our lives better. You're an amazing human being.

I am an 80 year old woman who has been addicted since I can remember. I'm not obese but am 35 pounds overweight that needs to go. Your open expression of your journey is so very impressive. Not just that you are continually growing but that you are vulnerably courageous. While I cannot afford to do the boot camp I am following the four principles you shared. I live on my Social Security and am a joyful and grateful person to have that. My life is great and so is my garden. Thank you so much for your putting forward your authentic self. I embraced it when my daughters teased me about scraping the bowl....we had a ceremony where they officially elected me the President of the Clean Plate Society! I have learned to laugh at myself and find joy in embracing my past, present, and future me! I enjoy eating the bright line way, and I enjoy finishing the food on my plate and no more. I continue to encourage myself that I will eat again in a few hours, and that gives me peace.

I feel this applies even beyond the food, to patterns of behaviours that we feel helpless in changing, for example. Plugging into the part of us that yearns for something else and into divine grace is great advice ❤ Thank you Susan and so glad you’re doing so well. 💜 Blessings to you and all that are on this BLE path. 🌠

WOW! I never thought about it before. I scrape everything in a bowl; soup, salad, cereal. I have the smallest size Pampered Chef spatula. It is a little larger than a tablespoon and I have used it for years, always scraping and getting the last drop of whatever. Like it so much better than a tablespoon. Dang.

Susan, I get you. I intend to invoke the power at the end of my next meal to experience the freedom too. Yes, when I was in the food, the suffering was ginormous for decades. Lovely vlog. So lovely. I resonate so much with this. I'm just like you and always want to wolf my food. I like to say I "gobble" it. It gives me a rush of pleasure and comfort like only food can. Even when it's perfectly weighed and measured! but I don't truly LIKE eating that way. I wanted to be free from gobbling. Now I set a timer and make myself stretch each meal over 20 minutes. It's amazing how much less sexy and exciting they are when I know I can't gobble. But like you said, there's a lot of freedom there.

Susan, Do you feel Guilty when you completely fill your car's gas tank? I sure don't. Remember that FOOD =FUEL. Remember that your weighed meal TOTALLY belongs to the individual. Scraping the bowl or the plate is allowed.
@sunnyfolding

She explained, as is my experience as well, that this 'scraping of the bowl' goes beyond what makes sense. There are no bites of food left; we have been scraping the bowl to the extreme, in a nonsensical way, for one more effort at a 'hit'; this is about an addictive behavior that attempts to scratch an itch in the addicted mind. It is not about nutrition.

Do you have any resources to share about emotional and sting? I can’t afford your program right now. I turned 60 in January and am heavier than I have ever been, sad and frustrated with myself. Interesting how in tune you are with your body and your journey. I need to tell you that if I need to, I'd use a rubber spatula. At this point in my journey, if I didn't get every thing that I measured out then in a couple of hours, if I felt 'hunger', my monkey brain with recall the morsels that I left in the bowl and it would use that against me! For real! Also, if you have a teenager that can have a warning that it's time to get up - that's amazing! USE THAT! LOL

This is both disturbing and sad. Giving this much thought and effort to a thought process about scraping a bowl! I don't see this as free and light at all. Wishing you TRUE peace and freedom to realize that life is a bigger than a bright meal. Grace happens at a deeper level than a fork or spoon. It is a miracle to stop the madness that bright line eating "feeds" into.

Hi there. Susan loves her big, bold life which certainly goes deeper than a spoon. She speaks about that frequently. In fact, her recent vlog about happiness addresses it. The point of this vlog is that those morsels at the bottom of the bowl had a HOLD over her. That wasn't the Bright meal's fault. That was the food addiction's fault. We hope this helps you see the differentiation. 🧡🧡
@TheaOrsetti
@TheaOrsetti 18 күн бұрын
Wow! Thank you for your reply! I get what you are saying about the difference between the food addiction hold and the actual morsels of food at the bottom of the bowl. As someone who is a 10++ on the susceptibility scale I speak from personal experience that fixating on the hold food has over the food addict instead of addressing what caused the addiction in the first place can take some people in the wrong direction. Following BLE made my addiction and unhealthy attitudes toward food worse. Once I stopped BLE I found freedom and peace that I can train myself to eat in moderation and lose weight without food obsession such as weighing food or not allowing a healthy snack when needed. I'm sure BLE has helped some people and I thank you for allowing me to express how BLE made my food addiction worse until I found a healthy way of eating that gave me peace. Wishing you all the best!

@Brightlineeating

Hi and welcome!! We're so glad you're here 🧡 Pre-made, store-bought kombucha almost always has sugar in it, so it’s not Bright Line Eating friendly. If you can find pre-made, store-bought kombucha without sugar, it’s fine. There are tea bags called kombucha, but we haven’t been able to ascertain whether they contain sugar, so we would not recommend drinking that tea. It’s a good idea to let your brain heal first. Then apply the “four questions” before you decide to try it. An 8 oz. serving of the Kettle and Fire beef broth brand has 35 calories, 6 grams of protein, and no fat. This would count as 1/4 of a protein serving. Other forms of bone broth are high in fat, have 208 calories, 16 grams of protein, and 9 grams of fat per serving, counting as 1 full protein serving. If you make the bone broth yourself, we suggest using bones with very little fat or meat on them. Count your 8 oz. serving of bone broth as 1/4 protein serving, as shown in the top example above. If you have any other questions, please reach out to support: ble.life/EI6Ewy We hope this helps 🥰
