@Leo Proctor "shout" does not refer to hollering are yelling. It refers to the shuffling dancing like movement of those in the ring. Shout songs were sung for various reason not just songs for working in the field. In truth shout song could be seen a the root of all American music because it's rhythm and style of singing literally is the foundation of popular music today. Example if you were to slow down a shout song take out the hand clapping and the stick you would get spirituals. Since many of the song are religious in context you have gospel. If you were to speed up the songs and rhythms add guitars and extra instruments you would get rock and roll and R&B. The Ring Shout is truly Americans little hidden gem that very few even know exist.

Part of it because ring shout is considered a Gullah dance but I don't believe historically it was only Gullahs who did it. But it's also mixed with a lot of Christianity involved compared to other diasporic dances like Barbadian folk dances or Brazilian samba.

Chile hours een even the word. My family is the reason the Ring Shout has really been able to be researched because it never died out in my community. Back when my mom was growing up they would shout the whole week of Christmas from house to house in the community. Then on New Years Eve would shout from 12 midnight to daybreak. By time i came along we would shout til bout 4 or 5 in the morning. Now we may go maybe an hour or hour and a half.
