In this video I show you how easy it is to take care of a Weeping willow from a cutting and encourage new roots to grow.
Salix sp.
Family
Salicaceae
Origin
From the cold and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere
Characteristics
The foliage varies depending on the variety, it can be hanging (weeping willow) or normal bearing (white willow).
Location
Outdoor Bonsai, that prefers sunny places, although in summer it is preferable to keep it in a semi-shaded location, but always a bright place. It perfectly withstands the wind, and its development is optimal in airy locations.
Watering
Water abundantly, and maintain a perfect drainage of the pot, so to constantly keep humidity in the bloc of roots. In full summer, it may become necessary to keep the pot in a basin full of water. It is very interesting to vaporize the willow crown, since they require very high hygrometry.
Fertilization
Basically in spring and autumn; Using an organic fertilizer of slow decomposition. Do not fertilize during summer, nor during the first 6 weeks after transplanting; and never provide fertilizer to a tree in poor condition.
Re-potting
Twice a year in early spring and early summer, after having trimmed half of the roots, and to transplant to a larger pot than the previous one.
SUBSTRATE
A very draining substrate should be used.
PRUNING
Prune at the time of transplant, leaving one bud per branch. Cut the long shoots in late autumn.
PINCHING
Pinch the buds in the early stages of spring, before the sap starts flowing.
WIRING
During spring and summer, wrapping the copper wire with raffia to avoid damaging the wood. We can also shape by placing weights.
Curiosities
Its use is mainly oriented to ornamental gardening, but we can find other species, such as the Salix caprea, whose buds are a delicacy for goats, or the wicker (Salix fragilis) whose use to make farm closures is compatible with the suitability of its branches for wickerwork.

Just got 3 rootless trunks, stuck in water and in a week they've grown out of control. Got them from CZ Grain, thru recommended using fox farms ocean potting soil. Some questions, just moved one to soil to see how it takes. I have a lot of grow lights and a south facing window. The window even in winter is potent, I moved a ficus there once early afternoon and 5 hours later a small branch with 8 leaves were singed. I was told if I moved on a cloudy day and it acclimated properly it'd be fine. I shouldn't worry lol it is the sun and trees prefer sun obviously. My question is since they're new would a grow light be better for now until it establishes itself in the pot? I have bonsai soil but was told to use fox farms and keep it moist watering 1-2 times a day. Thank you bro

I got my cuttings from CZ as well and wondering about my south windows once they are planted. Did you go with grow lights at first or keep it close to the window? Thanks.

A giant 50 ft plus weeping willow split in half and collapsed by my local park pond yesterday. Going to obtain some of these branches and try this myself before it's cut up and cleared away. Curious what is that green protective substance you're applying?

Does all this severe root pruning improve the formation of nebari?
@EndaonBonsai
@EndaonBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it is mandatory if you want to achieve a radial, balance and controlled nebari, in this particular species the roots grow fast, vigorously and easy. :)

What is the green stuff that you paint on her after clipping her branches? Will coconut oil be alright to substitute?
@kobehabtie1795
@kobehabtie1795 3 жыл бұрын
It is cut paste, it helps the plant to not lose to much moisture (mostly used in summer or with big cuts) i don't think coconut oil is a good substitute for it. However I can recommend paint of some sort, maybe you can find some see through paint or just a color of your liking? Anyways paint will do the trick
