In this lesson we look at Jerry Garcia's rippin' solo on "Brown-Eyed Women" from 5/8/77. "Brown-Eyed Women" was written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and was first performed on August 23, 1971. It was played consistently every years after its introduction, being played 347 times - the final performance on July 6, 1995 (days before the band's last concert).

He really boogied on this one. Between this and They Love Each Other, he was on fire that night, and offered us some of his most eloquent and artistic licks ever. It must have been a magical set, because that's saying a lot for a pure guitar talent like JG. Thanks for breaking it down!

What a godsend. I love the way you describe what is happening musically with the licks, since it helps the me understand how to get the same feeling when improvising my own lines.

One of my favourite solos on this album! I much prefer the phrasing way of showing a song, much easier to learn in my opinion. Often it’s not the notes your having trouble with when learning a Jerry solo but his unique phrasing. This method seems best so thanks a ton!

Thanks, Lucas! It's my preferred method as well; however, I try to keep as many people in mind when I make these videos. I've had some people say they don't even read tab (although it's not hard to learn), but, I've talked with some people online that play guitar and are blind. So again, I try to keep as many people in mind as possible when making these. But this solo is not really geared for beginners, though I encourage anyone and everyone to watch and learn something. Thanks for commenting!

Weeping Willow Guitar Lessons I hadn’t really thought about it that way, makes sense. On a side note I discovered an incredible Dead track today if your interested in some of Jerry’s classic early blues stuff. Worth checking out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7JmZM-DrbuqhWQ.html
