Marcus Rashford scored for Manchester United against Reading in the FA Cup but Wout Weghorst was ruled offside in the buildup. In this video, I look at the 'deliberate play' aspect of the offside law which is applicable in this case.
As always, if you're looking for a clear explanation with references to the Laws of the Game, I've got you covered.

The difference between this incident and the one with Salah is that Wolves defender Toti has more time and distance to react and make a genuine clearance; he just made a mess of it.

This sounds like the biggest load of 🥚🥚. Not necessarily from you but the way the offside rule has been implemented. I liked the VAR when it's a clear and obvious error by the official rule personally. I still believe Rashford was robbed.

It doesn’t matter how they word the laws or the offside law in particular; they can’t cover all areas and potential incidents so there will always be a fair bit of subjectivity (and that’s what causes the confusion and frustration among fans).

Slightly different circumstances with Salah. Defender Toti (arguably) had enough time to see the ball coming and adjust his position for a clearance but he just got it wrong. Making a mistake with the clearance does not negate the deliberate play.

The defenders mindset is to block the ball going towards his goal however he can. If he has time to set himself or not or not to make a deliberate play

Excellent explanation. It’s sad just how many people don’t bother to read the laws of the game and it’s guidelines. 👍

This explains it for me. Surprised as to how m detailed this is as opposed to our first goal vs City at home which I'm happy for but don't think should've stood if the law wasn't goofy. It'd be good for refs to have a period in the season to account for some their decisions in the season with teams sending reps as well as incidents they felt aggrieved by so that we can get explanations for some of the nonsense and so refs can be called out and cautioned.

I think everyone would agree that more transparency would be good. In Germany they have refs do interviews to explain some of the decisions which helps educate coaches, players and fans.

Imagine if there were no offsides in football. The games would be so much more exciting.

It would ruin the game, genuinely. Sounds good to say it; in practice it would be a complete joke.

@FCE I think, on the contrary, the game would become more exciting, less chance for bias calls from referees and VAR officials.

Definitely not. It would be carnage. Think about it and imagine players literally just waiting around by the goal; it would become a long-ball game again. No thanks.

😆 thanks. I think sometimes the pundits or ex-refs talk too much or make it too complicated when it’s fairly simple to explain. And to be honest, most of the pundits don’t understand the laws anyway; that’s obvious!

A needlessly complicated rule ruined a perfectly good goal.
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
If the law is made simpler, this incident may be a goal but many others would then be ruled out so we’d potentially have the same debate? Impossible to cover everything in a written law.

@@PaulSpacey To make it clear would require more nuanced thinking, to devolve something isn't necessarily going to make it "simpler". For example, in law, they often go back to the root of law to establish what was the intention of the law in the first place. If we look at the offside rule, and accept that the intention was to ensure that a player wouldn't sit on the edge of the box and gain unfair advantage. Did Wegorst's position gain an unfair advantage in the purest sense of how the game should be played? Maybe fractionally, 0.1, 0.2 of a degree, if considering the newest rules. So the question is, do the new rules improve or stifle the beautiful game? This is something that could be suggested about VAR, however, the degrees VAR should be addressing are magnitudes greater.

It’s a good point, although I would suggest that IFAB (with the input of multiple nations and referees etc) have a pretty nuanced view of the laws as a whole. My point was that writing laws to cover all parts of the game is very difficult. You can simplify (as it was previously) and then goals are ruled out which seem ridiculous. You can make laws more complex and nuanced; then you have players, fans etc saying its “stupid” and “not even football anymore.” The general idea of whether a player gains an advantage or not by being in an offside position should obviously be of primary consideration but this still needs subjective application based on each moment.

How ridiculous the game is becoming. Its a simple rule made complicated. Rashford robbed of a place in the history books thanks to pedantic fifa rules.

The law changes/additions are supposed to make things clearer but I’m not sure this is happening. You can’t cover all eventualities with written laws so there will always be subjectivity and debate.

@@PaulSpacey for the offside rule itself, I think the foundation should be a simple question: Are the defenders feet/foot level with the strikers? If the strikers feet are in front, he has an advantage..
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
But then you can score with any part of the body except hands/arms, so having your head in front can be an advantage from a cross for example. The laws can always be improved; it’s just not that easy to do it in practical terms!
@Danny-qv3ld
@Danny-qv3ld Жыл бұрын
@@PaulSpacey yeah I get you, but I mean, its becoming a downward spiral really. Imagine a ball was crossed in the box for example, and the striker and defender where level at the feet but the strikers head and shoulders where ahead, I'd say it was fair in terms of ground coverage, and I'd say the striker simply used his body better..but with these rules he has to literally draw the top half of his body back level with the defender because he will be 'offside'. I just think they need to simplify it, sometimes it will work for or go against teams but at least we won't waist time on VAR - it just feels unnatural pausing the game to look at a screen LOL
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
For most fans or soccer purists, VAR wasn’t needed or wanted. Give fans the choice, they’d probably be glad to get rid of it. I agree that the offside situation can be improved but even if it was just feet for example like you say, even if one players’ toe is ahead of the other by an inch or two, although he gains no advantage, he would still be offside. A line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Suren agrees that it was a deflection (therefore not deliberate) but still moans… lol 🤡 . It would have been given offside under most if not all variations of the offside law.
