Watching this LIVE while traveling to South Padre Island was exhilarating!!! Wei Yi was a stoic monster who only flashed a smile after he knew he clinched the match. Reminds me of Karpov, who was notorious for being extremely composed even during intense matches with Kasparov.

People severely underestimated Wei Yi. I think one reason (other than Firouzja's famous speed chess prowess) was that he beat Prag by "only" 3 points. But I think that was more a testament to how well Prag played than how badly Wei Yi played (even if Wei wasn't playing his best).

We also forget wei is playing from 11 to 2 am. This is better than his match against jorden where he apparently played after a night out. With a more favourable playing window his chess might improve even more tbh.

Great content. LOVE IT! This reminds me so much of the first SCC finals between Naka and Magnus. (most thought Naka would beat Magnus in this format, as they did Alireza as well). One player is stronger, but one is known for blitz/bullet prowess. It seems the stronger players generally still win in this format.

Good job on making the analysis a secondary objective. The reduction in size of it allows viewers to enjoy the main stage of the game much more effectively. It seems as though chess.com has taken feedback into consideration as before the analysis much more amplified and was a major annoyance. Subtle analysis like this is much better & keeping the main game untouched works best.

@@Alexander_jade Wow! So a 20 year old lost by a significant margin to a perrennial 2800 and top 10 player in the world! What an absolutely absurd outcome, especially given that even an elite player like Nakamura is liable to lose such a match by a wide margin, depending on his opponent -_- Firouzja is incredibly strong, but Wei Yi has been a super GM since he was like 16, and already has arguably the greatest game of the century, if not all time, under his belt, this was a no-brainer.

I would love to see these speed chess championships without the increment. The obvious benefit to an increment is to prevent shameless flagging, but I feel like it defeats the point of a time control: limiting the amount of time players have. The increment seems like it was meant for OTB chess where players have to make up for the amount of time required to physically move pieces and punch the clock, but that seems unnecessary in an online format. Getting rid of it will prevent players from purposely chewing up the match clock when a game should just end. You'll also get more entertaining bullet matches in 1-0 because I've seen far too many speed chess bullet matches where each player has over a minute on the clock after their first ten moves due to the increment.

Alireza is 16 not 14 years old. He broke 2700 (in 'real' chess) and is a true rising star, while Wei has been stuck at 2730-2750 for a few years. Seemed like a pretty even match up, with Wei the slight favorite because he is more experienced. And sure enough it was a very close match, with a lot of games that were given away by Alireza blunders. Can't really say that Wei Yi is a much better player. Alireza has definitely shown that he is near the same level as Wei, and that is not really surprising because he is near the same level in rating now.
