Weighing was a life saver for litter I emergency fostered this summer. I weighed every baby before and after feeding for the first night (something I never would have thought to do before watching Kitten Lady!) and was so surprised to see that our smallest baby was consistently losing weight all night and not transferring milk. The next morning I was able to make an informed choice to hand the litter off to a more qualified and better equipped caregiver/foster who had an incubator and tube feeding experience and knowledge. The whole litter got the help they needed the next day and everyone survived!! They're going to be available for adoption soon ❤ THANK YOU for this knowledge!!

I have a very smol boy. He's going to be a year old at the end of the month. Which is a miracle because when I found him, I thought he was gone. His mom was feral. Gave birth to three kittens at my Granny's. The other two were lil chonkers, and when Gran said there were three babies, but only two were out, we went looking for the third. He was in an egress window space. Cold, lifeless, full of fleas, just skin and bones. From the other two, I'd judged the litter being around 4 weeks old. He was about 1/2 that size, maybe less. But when I picked him up he mewed the loudest lil mew and I knew he would be a fighter! The vet we took him to said to put him down because it was cruel to keep him alive when he was just going to die (BTW he told us NOTHING about how to actually care for the kitten, just said he was gonna die and to put him to sleep and left!) Needless to say, we still tried. So thank YOU for posting all your helpful videos! It's how we were able to know how to care for him and keep him alive! He only weighs a little more than 5lbs now. He might be smol, but he's otherwise a completely healthy and happy almost 1 year old. He is the definition of "Tiny but Mighty!" ❤❤(BTW, we also got a new vet!)

Knowing you should weigh kittens was how my brother and I saved a little alley cat a few years ago. He wasn't gaining anything, so we finally took him to a shelter, and he had parvo! Now he's all grown and happy with a new family. :)

Its so interesting to me you get kitten spayed/neutered so early! For me my kitten had to reach 2kg (~4,4 pounds) before they would operate, which his very delicate self barely weighted at 5 months. My new cat, a 2 year old former street cat, also barely was allowed in surgery because she weighs exactly 2kg. I would really love to know why countries have chosen such different weigth limits!
@AveryRaineCrespo
@AveryRaineCrespo Жыл бұрын
In NewZealand, foster kittens are raised till 900-1000grams ( 9-10 weeks old. ) and then they're off for desexing and then adoption the day after surgery recovery. It's a bit young even I admit, but I'm glad their forever homes get to experience them as younglings :)

It depends on the vet in the US. Some won’t do it until the animal is six months regardless of weight. ::rolls eyes::

It's odd since all kittens reach sexual maturity at roughly the same age, as early as 4 months. 😳
@ericapuskar2595
@ericapuskar2595 Жыл бұрын
Cats can start reproducing at 4 months, and when you're dealing with the massive kitty population in the US, the sooner the better. Rescues in the US don't adopt out kittens and cats before spay/neuter (so they don't go on to contribute to the overpopulation issue). If we waited until 5 months to do so, our shelters and foster homes would constantly be full with cats simply waiting for s/n. During that time, new cats and kittens needing help wouldn't be able to come in.
@jennifermartin7468
@jennifermartin7468 Жыл бұрын
Weight/age requirements are arbitrary. Most shelters/rescues spay/neuter once kittens have reached 2lbs but a kitten could just as safely be neutered at 1lb.

As a postpartum nurse, I felt totally prepared to take on bottle babies as a new type of foster for the time being since my husband agreed to let me have baby animals in our current house since we already have my grown rescue dog living with us. Since we weigh babies daily with just a clean diaper on to check their weight, I checked my first foster kitten (who my husband named Squash) with my kitchen scale before every meal. I was impressed to note that just over the one night I had him before a permanent foster was found that he gained 4 grams in just over 10 hours! 🥰 Now after watching this video, I will change my weights to post meal for any future kittens, as I am used to fostering grown dogs, so kittens are new to me. 😅 Thanks for such an informative video, Hannah the Kitten Lady! I did turn in a spreadsheet to the foster coordinator with the times and amounts Squash ate overnight, as well as how many times I stimulated him to void, and all of his weights! She was impressed because no other fosters do this, and I told her that was just the nurse in me! 😂

I'm amazed that so many of your charts have consistent growth and so few decreases. So many of our fosters have good end of day numbers, but often go up and down quite a bit from feeding to feeding (two steps forward, one step back kind of thing). Would this ever be considered "normal" or is it concerning? Thank you for everything you do, Hannah! Can't imagine trying to foster without the wealth of information you provide!

google sheets is handy and you can plot their progress, it's free once you have the computer/smart phone, and it can be shared with the vet/shelter/coordinator. Some adopters may like the baby records too. In a scrum of kittens, you can't always tell who pooped (probably not the one with poop on his head), so it is not easy to say whose loss is reasonable. This is esp. true when they're using the litter box. I did once weigh a 5 or 6 week old before and after he peed because it looked like a lot: 30 grams.

It is important to place the scale correct. Like on a desk, the surface where the scale is placed should be firm, even, clean and dry. Not on a towel, something soft or uneven (all feet must touch the graund) or something that moves.That messes up the results.

Hi. My adult cat, Brinley, has been peeing in inappropriate places. I’m 14 and live with my mom and our two cats. We got her urine tested and she tested positive for a UTI (and it was her urine, not her brother’s). She was supposed to take pills every day for 14 days. Last night was the last night of it. One of the cats peed on our couch today. We didn’t see who it was, but my mom thinks it was Brinley, and now she wants to send her back to the humane society. And she wants to do it tonight. We’ve tried pheromones for them, and one or both of them keeps peeing in the wrong places. I'm trying to convince her to let me keep one of the cats in a separate room from the other, which is what we did before we found out why they were peeing in the wrong places. But she keeps saying “It would be traumatizing” even though I think it would be less traumatizing than sending her off without even knowing for sure if she did it. Do you know of anything we can try to do to keep her? Update: both of our cats have been having this problem, but we now have them on medication for this, and they’ve been doing better. We changed the litter boxes
@Stirchley1951
@Stirchley1951 Жыл бұрын
Give Brinley a new litter box or a litter box she hasn’t used before. She associates her current litter box with painful urination, which is what a UTI causes, and that’s why she pees somewhere else. My current cat recently had a UTI & would not use her litter box in the basement. So I took another litter box & put it upstairs for her. END OF PROBLEM! Also, next time you have a cat with a UTI ask your vet to give her a treatment of CONVENIA, which is injectable medicine & lasts 2 weeks. Much easier than giving pills & it really does the trick. Does your cat drink water? This is necessary to flush out germs in the urinary tract & keep it free of infection. GOOD LUCK!

The poor kitty is stressed. I would definitely place one cat in a room and this will be their room for awhile. I had a situation similar and I couldn't part with the new cat and I love my resident cat so I literally bought a fence like those iron fences one sees in a backyard and I separated my apartment! I live in a loft style place so no separate room except the bathroom and kitchen so one area was for one cat with litter box, cat tree and food eating area and the second area was for the second cat also with her own box, eating area, cat tree and they could still see each other but they couldn't pass the opening because they were small. Both had adequate sunlight and space and guess what!!! It worked. Both cats were relaxed, had their own territories and yes, I did have to rotate where I slept because they both loved to sleep with me but that was 5 years ago? Today the "Berlin wall" has been knocked down and both cats get along, not bonded but they get along, they have two litter boxes which they share, they share their food even though they each have their eating spaces and bowls and they do have their fav cat trees but I have a few around my place so they feel safe. Bottom line, it took a lot of work, a lot of patience and a lot of love. I just couldn't send back my cat to an overcrowded shelter, I just couldn't. I pray your mom will have a heart and I do wish you good luck.
@amycontreras410
@amycontreras410 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a cat expert but how many liter boxes are there? If there's too few then that can make cats insecure and make them feel like they need to pee everywhere. You could also try putting them on scheduled feeding and watering, so someone is able to time when they need to use the bathroom. Cats can also respond that way to any new changes, which again can make them feel insecure. How long have you guys had Brinley?

I don't know this exact weight scale, but some of them should not be placed on soft materials like towels or carpets, because they might get wrong values. If you're unsure how your weight scale works, place it on firm surfaces for best measurement.

Thanks to your channel, when a pregnant kitty jumped in my lap outside, I immediately knew what to do and how to help her! She just gave birth two days ago and I was not prepared for how little newborn kittens actually are! Now I have a whole family living in my bathroom🐾 ❗If anyone has experience with mama and kittens, please help She doesn't want to use the litter box and snuck to the kitchen and pooped and peed in the sink(maybe even twice!) Is it because the litter box is too close to her nesting box and food?(it's right in front of it about 2 feet away) I also have a second litter box in the hall where she gets some alone time Edit: both litter boxes are uncovered, she has used them before the birth UPDATE: with trials, tribulations and lots of digging in litter boxes, she finally used it again, her poop was full of fur. I'm thinking it was constipation, because she wanted to go but couldn't. We'll see what tonight brings and consult a vet

Oh and also, have you seen her peeing? Because it could also be because she is uncomfortable because of a bladder infection. From your story I don't think this is the case, but just to be sure..

Hi! I could use some advice. I took in a cat from outside after she had kept trying really hard to get inside my house whenever I’d go outside. Turns out she is pregnant. Every rescue and foster in my town is full so no one is willing to take her in. She has gotten super affectionate towards only me lately, and her mammary glands are big now so I know she’s due any day now. I have other cats I already have had for a while, all neutered and spayed. What would be the best thing to do for her? I live in a small place with no extra rooms, so I thought of making a nesting box in either my closet or bathroom. Is there anything else I should be doing for her? She’s very clingy with me and I’m not experienced with birthing cats.

Hi, I have 3, 3 week 3 day old kittens. They are with their mom and have been fine since birth. Recently 2 of them have not been gaining enough weight. One lost 4g one day but the next day gained 10g and the other hasn’t lost but today only gained 4g. The other is fine and is the biggest at 500g. They are all on the heavier side (smallest weighs 473g) but because the last 2 days 2 of them aren’t gaining much I’m slightly concerned for them. Could it be that the mom isn’t feeding enough? Should I intervene and try to bottle feed once or twice a day to help momma? They have been vet checked twice and last time was 1 week ago & had their first wormer. Thank you in advance 🙏🏼

Does anyone have first hand experience with using a diesel portable heater to heat an insolated outdoor cat house for multiple cats in very cold weather? All of the information I have seen claims that these heaters are safe.

You look so pretty here. Love the hair color and subdued makeup especially the lipstick. Sorry to be off topic.

Hope someone has any tips for me. I have a foster cat give birth to 4 kittens 2 weeks ago, and a few days ago she adopted another 4 kittens which had been abandoned. Because she suddenly had an extra four kittens to look after, I have been supplementing their diet until mum's milk supply increased. But, I am finding it very difficult to keep track of which kitten has been fed and which has not. As soon as I place one down after feeding they go back to the "kitten pile", and as many of them look very similar it is difficult to see the difference between them. Are there any way I can keep track of which kitten is which? Also mum gets stressed out if I keep taking her kittens for a long time, So I get to feed 3 maybe 4 before she lets me know it is time to leave. So I never get to weigh or feed everyone at the same time.

Are orange and white kitties mostly male kitties? I know calicos are mostly always female. Right? So are 50/50 kitties mostly male?

My 3-4 week old kitten has been gaining about 20-25g a day. Is this too much? He eats about 18-20ml every 4 hours. He has also been having diarrhea but the vet doesn’t seem concerned…is it possible I’m over feeding him?

I would suggest weighing on a flat smooth surface, not a cloth, that might not evenly distribute the weight leading to inaccurate weights!

Weighing my 7 week old fosters once a day now. It's so all over the place with them. There is always 1 kitten that drops a few grams but then gains 20 the next day. It can be nerve wracking.
