In this video, Andrew goes over the basics of weight belts for freediving and spearfishing. Please keep in mind that as there are different opinions on setting up and using weight belts, we encourage new divers to take a freediving course and talk to your instructor(s) about weight belt safety.

I never attack a float line to a belt. The line often get firmly stuck on mussels on rocks. I would have to ditch the belt to come up for air. I attach it to the speargun. Easier to drop the gun, go up for air, go back town retrieve the gun. I would only attack it to the belt in blue water, but yet, it is better to keep it secured to the gun

I agree, I prefer not to attach it to my belt and usually clip it to my gun.

@@DivingSports an option I thought, if you are with a camera , not with a speargun is to use some bungee wrist lanyard for the floatline, that you can remove quickly in case. Clipping to a belt is also an hazard if your line gets tangled in a propeller or in a jetski in some unfortunate accident. A friend lost his speargun this way, but it would have been worse having to think to ditch the belt in that situation.

i still use my dads weight belt he had from... like the 60s ..... aluminum buckle, its still in good condition lol...its nylon.. looks new except the weights have some scratches and dings but yeah... its a family treasure... only use it in river where i could recover it if worse case scenario

Great overview. I was cheap and I wasted money on a nylon belt. No need for it. Flip buckle can open accidentally (i lost a belt while swimming on my back). Now only Marseille style silicone, rubber maybe as a backup.

can you make extra holes on the rubber silicon belts? mine is loose even though I put to the last hole I lost a lot of weight also

How to do you know when you have the right weight? Is there a specific test?

I weigh around 135 pounds, 5 foot 7 inches, and wear a 1.5 mm wetsuit, also Im spearfishing in water that only gets around 35-40 feet deep at max in freshwater, so what would be a weight to use and I don’t know if it would help but I believe my BMI is around 17% IDK haven’t looked since about a year ago, thank you

I'm a cheapo. I don't like putting knives on my weightbelt because it's one more thing i'll have to buy back if i ditch. And seeing that import tax is so high on everything, my knives around $100USD+
