The Crowd That Lifted The Weight

The intensity of the crowd during the men's +109kg session at the Euorpean Weightlifting Championships 2023 gives us a glimpse as to the true potential of weightlifting. The chanting, cheering and energy that the crowd brought with it helped empower the weightlifters to place, in many cases, personal records overhead. For Lasha Talakhadze, Varazdat Lalayan and Simon Martirosyan it played a huge role.

I like how hyped the crowd was. At the same time it's just occurred to me that I haven't seen an interview of Lasha or the other lifters. I also think that just as we see gymnasts, track athletes swimmers, soccer players, football players and basketball players on the cover of magazines and on cereal boxes that same energy should go towards weightlifters. They put just as much effort, discipline and dedication into being the best they can be as any other athlete does. I'm not dissing any other athlete. I'm just saying I'd like to see weightlifters get the same recognition.

@jmcsquared18
@jmcsquared18 10 ай бұрын
@@kathirpagalavan6448 I just don't think that Lasha is gonna total 500. Just mathematically, it's not gonna happen. Lasha struggled on his 267 clean and jerk (it initially got two reds before the jury gave it back to him). If he one day snatches even 230, which would be completely mind boggling, he'd need to hit 270 on the clean and jerk to get to 500. If he doesn't snatch north of 225, it'd need to be 275 or more. That'd be the heaviest attempt ever, not just make, if he did make it. Now that he's suffered an injury, despite how he's still the best ever, he might be at his peak. Just raking in golds at this point, he'll eventually get 9 gold totals, or maybe double digit golds, which would be a historic first. But a 500 total seems out of reach now imo.

Yes, he has confirmed that he has a minor heart issue previously and recently his condition has been worsening. Steroids fuck up your heart, being very obese is hard on your heart, combine these two things with the absolutely enormous amount of energy it takes to move the weight he does, and this is where you land. I'm not concerned with use if every one is on similar amounts, but if one athlete finds a way to skate by with heavier usage it's bad for the sport.

Can you please explain to us why they prefer to be fat over muscular? Muscle weighs more than fat so buoyancy is not an accurate reason. Muscle does what you tell it to do. Fat bobbles around and shimmies making it unwieldy. So where is the reasoning if they are already strong enough and big enough and fit to lift. It seems to me that muscle is the way to go. Help me out here I just can't see the reasonable cause? And look at how overheated they get being that insulated. Muscle would allow better sweat and less insulation.

I think that for the things they do with the barbell, being fat isn't an obstacle, and also more fat equals more strenght. You then could ask if a 180 Kg fat, strong Lasha would be better than a thinner Lasha with same muscle mass but less fat; well, the answer I gave myself is that they just don't bother themselves with weight loss training, and their time is better spent working on strenght and techique.

@@noellundstrom7447 ok maybe I'm using the wrong terminology, I guess the real question is why is the 109+ significantly fatter than the rest of weightlifting, is there an advantage, other than just being able to eat as much as you want for recovery, to having so much extra kg to stand up with. If you stripped away the weight, and they were 10% BF with the exact same muscle, could they lift the same weight?

@@kolterlivengood7460fat is free core mass that helps with spine stabilisation. It's much harder to build the same amount of mass in terms of muscle, but fat is easy and provides a VERY strong help with bracing.

Don't need recovery if you make your lifts. If you miss and have to go back out right away, yeah, but you've already messed up by then.

@@kolterlivengood7460 Alongside Fat's other interesting properties, it has an effect which allows nutrients to be absorbed more easily (think fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D as an example), and assists the production and storage of vital hormones (to add to the juice they already are taking). Having more means you have the reserves to build more muscle.

This is definitely a sport that would be improved by having the athletes mic'd up and encouraging them to trash talk each other and pump up the crowd.
