Weird Borders: Why Countries Have Pieces Detached

Ever wondered why a part of Russia is detached from the rest?
There are a lot of weird borders in the world, and often the reason is that a country wanted access to the sea and fight like crazy to get it.
They ignore any reasonable boundary between countries in exchange for a bizarre panhandle, or sometimes even cutting off parts of other countries to create a strange border situation called enclaves, which is when a part of a country is only reachable by land through other countries.
This video goes over 3 bizarre border situations including why Russia has an the kaliningrad exclave, which is a result of a chain of events in world war 1 and world war 2 in which germany had a strange border where east prussia was an exclave cut off by the danzig corridor, which actually led to world war 2.
There is also Angola's exclave of Cabinda cut off by the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This weird border is a by product of the scramble for Africa.
Finally there is Croatia, which looks like it is taking all of Bosnia and Herzegovina's coastline until you look closely and notice a strange border strip which gives Bosnia ad Herzegovina a 20 kilometer coastline and detaches a piece of croatia. This weird border is a quirk of history, where the land in the balkans changed hands multiple times.
Two Corrections: Poland was RE-created after ww1 as it was previously occupied by Germany and Russia. Also the video is a bit vague on who started ww2. It was Germany. As well Danzig is used as the name for the city of Gdansk because that is what it was at the time.

Alaska is another example of an exclave. It is separated from the US and shares boundaries with Canada. If you want to drive to Alaska, you need a passport to get from one US state to another.

Thank you. Its sometimes interesting to realise that such things happen, AND STAY through the times, as when "Europe" was declared, I remember the house I rent in the north Portugal, about 5 kilometers from Spain. That could have be a disaster por trading, , but, no more border change the tings, and a new market appears: Even you live in Spain or Portugal, every one have interest to go at this place (excuse my bad english), but for exemple, spanish went there for gas or fuel, as portugueses went for meat or else. At least, the most funny was the devasted and tagged custom houses, anat the beggining, young guys playing with their mopeds around the place, Wheeling noisily...

The current Russian exclave Kaliningrad used to be a place where all Lithuanian authors published their books (the first book in lithuanian was published in the current Kaliningrad, ). Majority of people who were living in Koningsberg were mostly Lithuanians, who fled the country due to tax evasion, failure for landownership problems. Therefore, the little country Koninsberg received a name "Lithuania Minor"due to vast numbers of lithuanians migrating to the country.

This comment will answer most of the frequently asked questions in the comments: 1. Why didn't you include ? There are a lot of exclaves in the world. So much in fact that I think It would probably thank an entire series of videos to cover them all. The three I chose to cover in this video have the theme of being the result of a country needing access to the sea so I thought they fit well together. 2. Who started world war 2? The Nazis started WW2 in Europe. In the video I made the mistake of being extremely unclear on a very important topic. I said "Poland told the Nazis no, and started world war 2". I didn't mean Poland started ww2, but I understand why people would think I did. The Nazis had previously demanded small areas of land from other countries, only to invade them later. So by 1939 nobody believed the Nazis anymore so Poland had no choice but to say no. The Nazis didn't immediately go to war after they were told no. Instead they created a bunch of false events which were used to justify invading Poland. The Nazis often tried to claim Poland made them do it, that is why it was bad for me to have a wording that could imply I meant Poland was responsible, since that would be playing right into the Nazi's narrative. I chose a much more simplified explanation since ww2 wasn't the focus of the video and ultimately the Nazis wanted the Danzig corridor when they chose to invade Poland, getting the rest of Poland as well was just taking two steps at once.

"The three I chose to cover in this video have the theme of being the result of a country needing access to the sea". EXACTLY. So you could've just said THAT and added more countries. IDK why you gave a big history lesson? You made this video more complicated than it had to be. Though Kaliningrad also chose to remain part of Russia, because they have no industry that would sustain a viable economy, so if they were an independent country, they would be the poorest country in Europe and one of the poorest in the world. As for WWII, the war technically wasn't even started in Poland. It was started in Gdansk, which at the time was a city-state called the "Free City of Gdansk", which was separate from the Polish state.

everything u say is half true 1. ur own polish king granted the land to the teutonic order which is called deutschritter-orden in german meaning order of the german knights so a polish king made all this happen at first. 2. the baltic tribe prussians were neither polish german or russian or whatever they were prussians so its not an excuse to refer to them considering modern age claims for this region 3. the prussians werent exterminated and they were assimilated with the germans owning the land later becoming head of the teuton order and german and prussian ppl mixd up there during the centuries so the inhabitants are neither prussian or german they r both 4.consider some medieval history about polands north all those cities like königsberg or danzig stettin posen were built by germans not polish ppl the architecture tells it all its german architecture 5. germany didnt exist as a national state untill the 19th century yes, but the holy roman empire of german nation existed since the 10th century and the emperor of it was the emperor of germany, later it was the habsburg emperor in austria, and no austria is not an own nation at that time. austria transfers from auster east in latin and means eastern realm of germany or österreich in german eastern-empire in english the holy roman empire was split up into minor territories ruled by kings dukes and so on but they all were ruled by the emperor of the holy roman empire who travelled through the lands and lived in kaiserpfalzen castles spread around the country so germany has existed since th 11th century and the sovereign national state known as german reich which is the predecessor of the holy roman empire was found in the 19th century thats true but thats not the birth of germany this is also the reason the thrid reich was called the third reich 1.reich:holy roman empire of german nation 2.reich:imperial germany the kaiserreich 3.reich:nazi germany according to u the third reich would ve been the second reich so pls dont spread wrong facts as long as u dont know the truth

Алина Старковa (Alina Starkova) and if Germany hadn't asked for polish territories, WWII would have never happened. Indirectly accusing Poland of starting WWII is ridiculous. What started WWII was Germany's invasion of Poland. They knew Poland was allied with France and Great Britain. They perfectly knew what could happen, and it did. But if you want to acuse, you could also acuse Japan, because they attacked the USA, wich made them enter the war against the AXIS powers, right? When did an allied force invade european territories just because? Never. Its only the AXIS forces aggressions that led to a world war.

...the facts within the statement are true, but the statement itself is false. Poland did not start the war, nazi Germany did. Hitler's order to invade Poland on 1 sept. 1939 did literally start the war. We all agree. The statement "Poland said no, AND started WW II" is if fact not only incorrect, but also unjust, as it shifts the blame from the oppressor, to the oppressed. In the same manner "polish death camps" do, as referring to nazi German camps on occupied polish territory were many poles were murdered. This is not only bad grammar, but unfortunately a straight forward insult to a lot of poles who know their history, or lost family members in these WW II atrocities. It's on a the same lines as telling a rape victim, to their face... that they "were asking for it" ..by wearing a short skirt, or pink shoes... unjust, to say the least. Nazi germany started the war primarily because of persecution of ethnic germans in regions that (pre WW1) was german territory, but now belonged to Poland. Prior to attacking Poland they tried several times to resolve the issue diplomatically. Of course the version you're told in school is pretty much "LETS START A WORLD WAR CAUSE WE NEED MORE RANDOM TERRITORY LUL". There are rarely any "good" vs "evil" in history, but the victors sure do write it.

Surgical Autumn Because Kaliningrad was used as a "hold at all costs" (until death) military fort by Nazi Germany. Before & during that a lot of people were evacuated west, then after the battle, some people left on their own, some were deported and some stayed, also in later years a lot of Germans and Poles moved back there. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg Kaliningrad was pretty much nothing at that point, barely even a military position, let alone a place for civilians to live. It's like asking "why was the Eiffel tower toured by Hitler and not the French in 1940"... because what would they be doing at a military stronghold?

You didn't mention why Dubrovnik/Ragusa exclave exists. In 18th century, when Habsurbg Monarchy, Poland, Ottoman Empire and Republic of Venice made a treaty, Venice was about to get Dalmatia. But their fierce competitor Dubrovnik sold a part of own territory to Ottoman Empire just so they don't have a border to Venice, what is now causing really big problems.

You didn't really explain how Croatian exclave came to be. Ragusa, while dominantly inhabited by Croatians was not part of Croatia until it was integrated into the Austro-Hungarian empire. The 20km land strip was part of Ragusa that they seceded to the Ottomans to lose the land border with the Venetians thus insuring itself from a land invasion. The Naval one was not likely since Ragusa, being a merchant republic, while smaller in wealth and influence, had a decent enough fleet to defend itself.
@VanDeGraph

Russia being technologically behind is first of all false. The revolution in Russia had industrialized the nation. Russia was not technologically behind, rather it was more keen on creating cheaper and easier to make equipment over the German elaborate and powerful equipment. TheFifa107 makes a good case about it. If Russia knew about it, it would have mobilized way before. There are documents that mention that Stalin was in complete shock, because he didn't want to believe Hitler broke the pact. Russian Officials had indeed warned him before but he didn't believe them.

There is also weird border between Serbia and Bosnia. Bosnia has small enclave which consists of only one village near Serbian city of Priboj and is surrounded with Serbia from all sides. Border line is unusual at this place and sometimes if you wish to cross 20 miles in straight line you have to cross border several times. The reason for this irregularity of border is that borders were created depending on the nationality of land owner, so as one Bosnian possessed this village in Serbia, villiga territory was joined to Bosnia.

Argentina doesn't have Exclaves in Chile If you mean Tierra del Fuego, it's not an exclave, it's an island

Yes, this is an island, but the main access from the rest of Argentina is the Transamerican Road through Chile.

So many things in this video are just plain wrong. Poland didn't "get created" after the 1. WW, it got its independence back. It also certainly didn't START the war. I understand that this is supposed to be dumbed down, but at least don't spread false information.

Seeing this small section of south-west Russia beside the rest of Eastern Europe, it already looks like a huge country. Then remember that it shares a border with China, Mongolia and North Korea in the south-east, and is only 50 miles from Alaska in the far north-east. Bottom line is: Russia is huge.

Actually, Poland as it is now WAS created. The original Crown of Poland was NOTHING like it is now. It was greatly lesser in territorial size than it is now. The reason is that after World War I, Poland was supported by the League of Nations to keep Germany in line, so it had been gifted German and former territories of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Precisely why Lithuania lost all of its Ruthenian lands - Lithuania was only recognized with the lands that ethnic Lithuanians were remaining in, while Poland was gifted a tremendous amount of German and Ruthenians lands to make it able to fend off Germans if they were to rise up again. A plan that horribly failed in WWII

No that is not what I meant. It was poorly worded. Germany was the one had been demanding territory from all sorts of countries and then still invading anyway, so Poland had no choice but to say no. I'm sorry for having that part so poorly worded.

Gdansk was established in 997 and it was part of Kingdom of Poland for the next 800y with a little break for teutonic occupation. Only after the second partition of Poland Prussia took the city away for a little over 100y. So why you call it a German territory?

klakluska Gdańsk for very long time was Free City too. And Van. Germany invaded, because they had to. Germany right before WW2 was bankrut, there was no other choice: War or in next year says "We dont have money".

Poland Refuses To Cede Danzig! Despite our attempts to allow Poland to hand over Danzig peacefully, even vowing to give up our claims on other German territories in exchange, we have been met with refusal. As expected, the world gives nothing to us that we do not seize by force. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |They know very well what the alternative is.| -----------------------------------------------------------------------
