Listen… Missouri is an interesting place. You may of not have woken up today wondering what makes the great state of Missouri so interesting, but I’m glad you’re here!
Let’s just say I’m going to let you all in on the things you have probably never heard of about Missouri. I’m serious, just sit tight, and we will get into it!
Facts about Missouri:
- Missouri is called the "Show me State" because it was a quote began by Willard Duncan Vandivar and means that we aren't gullible
- Missouri's state dinosaur is the Hadrosaur.
- Missouri state capital has been rebuilt 3 times, and burned down twice. The state capital is built out of Missouri natural elements.
- Missouri is pronounced Missour-EE AND Missour-AH. Both are valid.
- Half say soda, the other half says pop!
- Cornealious Michael Anderson was arrested for burglary but never went to jail... 👀
- The KKK applied to sponsor a highway, so the state named the road after Rosa Parks
- Missouri also hosted the 1904 summer Olympics, and it was the very first Olympics to be hosted in America! But it was a DISASTER.
- Missouri hosted the State Fair and that's where the waffle cone was created!
- A tri-state tornado came through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana in 1925, one of the worst tornadoes in history!
- Missouri also sets a record for the worst earthquake at 7.5-8.8 on the Richter Scale!! This is when the Mississippi River flowed backwards?

Back before the civil war there was a fungus killing all the grape vines in France but then a man specializing in grape vines from Hermann MO had bred a variety that could withstand the fungus. They grafted the roots of his vines onto the ones in France and he basically saved Frances entire grape supply

@DRG00DandS3XY Missouri was never a part of the confederacy. Missouri was the only state to call a convention on secession and vote not too. Instead the convention voted to stay in the Union and stay out of the war. The state legislature then formed a militia to defend Missouri from both the Union and the Confeceracy. An early compromise with union forces confined federal troop activity to St. Louis. This neutrality, unfortunately, did not last long, do to a governor that supported the Confederacy. Defying the state legislature, he conspired to use the state militia to capture St. Louis for the confederacy, an attempt that failed. Not long after, the second major battle of the civil war would take place in the southern portion of the state, at Wilson's Creek. As a side note, I have been known to vote against people just because they call it "Missourah".

My grandmother lived through the 1925 tornado in St Louis Missouri. The house she lived in was picked up and turned around on its foundation. After the tornado the family moved back to the Ozarks. She lived to the age of 93.

The issue with the Mormons in Missouri as well as in Illinois was that the people did not advocate bigamy so they wanted those folks out.

@@mrsamamorris You have it all wrong, the main reason was the elders of the Mormon church were marring young girls as young as 13 years old. My family belonged to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

What I know? The baldknobbers curse. Momo. Ozark howler. Steeleville giant. The cape Girardeau ufo crash. The piranha in Lake of the Ozarks and the very first one caught in Stockton lake. My school has the taxidermy as a donation from the guy who caught that one. I had a ufo sighting in bona when I was 12. Several haunts. And others.

Ufo crash was cape County. I believe it actually happened between chaffee and Scott city. Different stories but the paper published a photo and it was definitely not in Cape

One fact I remember hearing was that during the New Madrid Earthquake, you could hear the bells ringing all the way in Boston, Massachusetts.

There's also the Cuban mailman, Andarín Carvajal, who after saying he hadn't eaten for days, sat down in an orchard to eat some apples, fell asleep and still came fourth in the marathon, in the 1904 olympics. He also reported he had hitchhiked from New Orleans, to the games and had not eaten properly for days.

Marble Hill Missouri has a dinosaur museum at the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History. This is the Glen Allen dinosaur I believe.

Missouri is a Midwestern state mixed with midwest and southern culture. Northern Missouri feels too much like Iowa while Southern Missouri feels too much like Arkansas.

A Missouri did have an earthquake either 68-69 68 or 69 I was seven or eight years old when it happened and I was living in Woodson Terrace by the airport and it was so strong that it shook our house and rattled cabinets

This is the second video I have watch that said the Missouri River ran backwards for three days, No! it was the Mississippi River. See the Missouri River connects to the Mississippi River in St Louis. New Madrid is a 3 hours ride south of St. Louis along the Mississippi River.

That's right it was the Mississippi. It was so strong it rang church bells in Boston and woke up President Madison in the middle of the night.

@@cwfan2 it did several things! Made a new lake, changed the corse of the river, made sand geysers, and so much more. I live 2 hours away from New Madrid. Sad thing is they really don't know how strong the earthquake was. They only can guess due to first hand witness written record found during that time.

May I suggest some research topics? 1. Gayoso, MO. 2. Sullivan County caves 3. Black bears and Mountain Lions (expanding their range) + Elk 4. Fishing in Missouri (not overdone from the point of view of someone relocating here) 5. Hiking trails, nature watching. Include our lightning bugs. 6. High end restaurants in the cities.

@@wiserlivingrealty Gayoso is Missouri's Atlantis. After the 1811-12 earthquake, the River changed course and it took until approximately 1863 to wash it completely away. It's over by Mingo.

Lived in NW MO all my 60 years, we call her Missourah. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents all called her Missouraah. Most of my family has been in NW MO since the 1860’s some since the early 1800’s. And we call it pop not soda but my grandparents called it sodie what can I say they had their own way of speaking. If my grandfather would get mad at someone, when he was done talking to them, He would tell them go piss up a rope and walk away.

Personal fact, a man named Lucas Thery was arrested multiple times in my home town and a couple others before that for harassing, meth possession, threatening police, egging my town’s court house, and vandalizing a billboard most of those on multiple occasions. He’s behind bars for 5 years now and I actually had a personal interaction with him not even a week before he egged the courthouse where he gave me a copper chained necklace and a big heart on it. He seems like a nice guy but just a little misguided. Also a former classmate of mine’s dad’s torso was found in a burn pile and his car stolen a couple months ago.

Another fun fact, there are towns that belong to Illinois, but are on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. This is because the Mississippi River slowly eroded and shifted east, causing Illinois territory to be west of the Mississippi River.

You have that kind of wrong, it was because of a big flood, the land is called Kaskaskia, Island. Kaskaskia was the site of Illinois first capital 1818-1820 home of the liberty bell of the west. It can only be reached by going through St. Mary, Missouri

I use these videos for my kids homeschool geography lesson and most states are just boring standard facts, or go so fast with zero explanation. Just say earthquake or not happening is luring people into a false sense of security. I live in the Southeast Missouri region and earthquakes happen all the time in the New Madrid/Bootheel area. Granted most are under 5.0 and usually not felt much. However there are constant news reports of earthquakes happening in the area. Just a recap, the New Madrid Seismic Zone is still active.

I've lived in Muh·zuor·ree all my life it's home to me ! I drink soda not pop ! My father was born here in 1901 and was 3 years old during the World's Fair. At this time I don't agree with our Politicians but have found it a great place to live. I have found that most neighbors help neighbors. But on the other hand you get what you give ! We all agree that we have the best baseball in the world , The World Champion St. Louis Cardinals ! Its the Gateway to the West . And there is nothing better than St. Louis Bar-B-Que, toasted Ravioli and Gooey Butter Cake ! We have all the 4 seasons and beautiful green rolling hills that in the Fall becomes a showplace. 4th of July Under the Arch is spectacular with a fireworks display that mirrors over the Mississippi River ! A another great reason to buy a home in Missouri is that if Climate change doesn't happen Missouri will be Ocean front property ! The Missouri Dinosaur has been renamed it's Parrosaurus Missouriensis ! Parrosaurus for this species. The species is estimated to have had around 1,000 small teeth,[4][7] weighed 3-4 short tons (2.7-3.6 t)[8] (or around as much as an elephant today), stood 10 feet (3.0 m) tall at its back, and stretched about 30-35 feet (9.1-10.7 m) from head to tail.[7][9] H. missouriensis lived in what is now southeast Missouri during the Campanian age[10][11] of the Late Cretaceous period. We moved to South County in the 70's. And I now live in Warrenton Mo. And this is were I'll stay ! So Missouri holds my family history and heart ! Have a Good One ! Which I am told only Missourians say !

@@RTFLDGR Facts ! The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 Worlds Series, The Kansas City Royals have won 2 World Series . Why is St Louis known for World Famous BBQ. St. Louis is said to consume more barbecue sauce per capita than any other city in the United States. St Louis barbecue ribs have a unique cut, which is known as St. Louis-style, which is meatier since the rib tops, cartilage, and sternum bone are removed. Our sauce is sweet. We are also known for Gooey Butter cake and Toasted Ravioli. Kansas City is known for it's World famous Kansas City Style Steaks. It's all just a style , there is great food to be had all across the US. It's not a contest.

I can appreciate your passion for better baseball and BBQ. As a true Blue KC Royals fan, my -bias has no bounds. Certainly, an East Coast baseball team that has it's roots in the 19th century had better accumulate some World Series wins. The KC Royals just got started in 1969. We are talking about Missouri here. and yes ... the inter-league play has resulted in the Cards whooping the Royals about 2:1. doesn't matter. I've got 50 years invested into the Royals stadium. You could never convince me there is a better team anywhere. Now for BBQ. There simply is no way a St. Louis citizen can declare better Q in history or quality within the State of Missouri. @ the national level, no one talks about St. Louis BBQ. Kansas City is King. Folks from North Carolina, Georgia & Texas gasp in-awe @ the quality and quantity of styles across the city. Every flavor of sauce are here. Rosedale on SW Blvd is working mans. Bryants is in the hood and worth the risk to get to. Arthur Pinkard taught Mr. Gates how to smoke and now that's a mainstay in our town. (I live next door to a Gate's a never get tired of the wood smoke or Q.) Now we have Q39, Jack Stack and Joes, all newcomers that are award-winning. Beef, pork and chicken are all handled in this town. Kansas City smoking meats is a competition that never ends. Remember KC stockyards. Now don't get me started on the subject of music. peace ;-)

I grew up in southwestern Missouri. We pronounced it "Missoura", but you can only say it that way if you have a southern Missouri drawl. You do NOT have that drawl, so don't even think about pronouncing it that way. Everyone from that part of the state will KNOW you are faking it. You sound like you are from St. Louis to me. I went to college in St. Louis, and every time I came home from school, my friends and relatives said I sounded like I was from St. Louis. Don't feel bad, I don't have that drawl anymore either. It goes away quickly, but strangely returns when I return to SW Missouri. I have lived in California since 1970, so I now say "Missouri." The very BEST thing about the state is the Missouri Conservation Commission. Great organization. It SHOULD be the model for all states' environmental organizations. I could go on and on. I still love many of the things about the state. Learn about the border war in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Be sure you get the TRUTH from BOTH sides. It still goes on, but no shooting these days. My family, except for two very young boys, on my father's side were all killed, either by guerillas or by pro-union soldiers. In the words spoken by the river ferry operator in The Outlaw Josey Wales, "To stay alive you gotta be able to whistle dixie or sing the battle hymn of the republic with equal enthusiasm."

Two years ago, Eh?. Ok. Back in 1994 my girlfriend at the time moved to Springfield along with her Mother and sister. Here Grandparents lived there. I was fortunate enough to be able to fly out from Los Angeles to spend a week there. Wonderful, Beautiful and peaceful part of our United States of America. One day we traveled North a bit to tour some Caverns, the name escapes me. We also traveled South to a hugh lake. I believe that area was afterward built up into Branford MO. Beautiful and peaceful area with kind people way back then.

I've lived in SW Missouri all my life. My dad was born in 1931 and said Missour-uh... I always have said Missour-ee. I think that a lot of times, people who are/were my dad's age would be more likely to say Missour-uh instead of Missour-ee. And I say POP, not SODA. My husband who is from the Hot Springs Ark area (and went to HS in California some), says SODA.

Trip to Dixon, Mo this morning.... (this very morning!) There was a nice sized multi pointed buck, dead on the side of the road. That was Not the strange part. The strange part was that there was a rope tied to the antlers!

I heard that it was legal to have an open container of alcohol in your car just as long as the driver isn't holding it. I've called this the "hold my beer" law. I heard that was changed, but recently I've been told it's still on the books. Springfield is where the ostensibly Chinese dish Cashew Chicken was first developed. Springfield is also known as the birthplace of Route 66. A bunch of prominent businessmen met in a Springfield hotel to make plans for a new national road. The U.S. Highway Department said there was already a US 60 and US 70. As an East-West highway it should have an even numbered designation. They suggested 62. The businessmen thought it over and decided 66 had a better ring to it. "The Queen City of the Ozarks" got its nickname from the Hillbilly Jamboree radio show that was broadcast nationally from Springfield back in the day. The third largest city in the state with a population of more than 350,000, Springfield still likes to think of itself as Mayberry. My wife and I lived there for fourteen years and always referred to Missouri as Misery.

I have always said Missourah. I think it's mostly people that grew up in the country. I grew up on a small stock farm, and everyone around pronounced it the same way I did. My brother and sister grew up in town (they're quite a bit older than me) and they always pronounced it "Missouree". I'm writing it phonetically to show pronunciation more easily.

There was once a law on the books allowing a man to give his wife 20 lashings with a rod. It had to be made of wood, less than two feet long, no thicker than his thumb knuckle. This penalty could be enforced for the crimes of not having his supper on the table when he got home from work, or for not having his socks properly paired and folded in his dresser drawer. They then proceeded to tell wives how to properly pair and fold socks. There's a reason my mother and all my aunts fold socks first when doing laundry, and all of them fold the same way...

Missouri is also the only state to have a coup when Clairborn Jackson was overthrown as Governor so we couldn't secede from the Union. Missouri has a star on the Confederate battle flag (1 of 2 states with that distinction) and had Representatives in both governments!
