We start in 1881 Buffalo, New York, with a story that might shock you-both literally and figuratively. Witness how an accident led to the invention of the electric chair and coined a phrase that describes being in a precarious or high-pressure situation.
Next, we transport you to the dense forests of medieval Europe where the aristocracy turned bird hunting into an art form. Learn how the cautious tactics of beaters, meant to rouse birds into the open, gave rise to a phrase that now describes a roundabout method of approaching a subject.
Our journey doesn't stop there. We gallop into 16th century England, where the burgeoning sport of horse racing brings us a phrase born from the visible eagerness of horses at the starting line. This expression has since transcended the tracks to describe anyone brimming with anticipation or impatience.
Lastly, we take a gritty turn to medieval Europe, where the booming leather industry and extreme poverty lead to a phrase that starkly illustrates the depths of destitution.
Each story not only explores the origins of these phrases but also paints a vivid picture of the times that gave rise to them. So, don't miss out on these intriguing tales-perfect for sparking conversation or simply gaining a new perspective on the words we often take for granted.

“Champing at the bit” is the correct phrase, although “chomping at the bit” is often used interchangeably and has become widely accepted, even though it's technically a misquote
