I find it weird how they banned O powers in XY. "They make the game easier!" Bro this is gen 6, the easiest pokemon games out there. Any% should be the fastest version of the game that is achievable in solo play without external help. I can see banning a strategy if it relies heavily on luck, but O powers seemingly REMOVE luck needed. If you want to make a new category without O powers, just do that and call it "Any% no O powers".

Thats part of the problem no? Half the point of a pokemon speedrun is abusing the games mechanics using RNG manipulation and to a degree 'luck' in your favor. Some of the coolest and most beloved games all have elements of luck that keep the runs of them interesting, luck is not inherently a problem in speed running or else games like minecraft or like any RPG would not be really popular games to run. I'd go as far to say the reason why O powers are banned is because they do exactly that- remove luck. In your words it's the easiest pokemon game out there already, why would anyone even bother with it if something like O powers reduced the likelihood of variety, challenge, or exciting moments even further?

All of these rules make sense accept for the O-Powers one. No using a bugged move in a glitchless run? That's self-explanatory. No emulators? Sure, consistency is important. No trading? Of course, it's already a rule across the board that speedruns are supposed to be done on fresh files, getting pokemon and items from an existing file isn't exactly starting fresh. No Online Features? Makes sense, on top of rewarding people with large audiences, if the online servers ever go down entire routes and strategies would disappear, so it's better to just ban them from the beginning. But O-Powers? No reason to ban them, they are a base feature that don't require playing online, add more consistency to the run, and make it faster. O-Powers provide everything a speedrunner should want.

"O-Powers were banned because they made the run less fun" And then the first points brought up are making a Pokemon less of a headache to catch, and guaranteeing an item that otherwise can't be gotten on all runs (I assume because friendship mechanics are luck based?). Are those not just pure positives, since they cut down the amount of rng required? I don't see how hoping to get a Hawlucha random encounter would be fun to watch or play.

friendship is indeed RNG. its a 50% chance to increase your friendship every 50 or so steps... at least in older pokemon games. because of rng manips, spinner control etc speedruns have ultra optimised step counters... you can see where im going with this

Could you help me understand why the people who want to use O-Powers can't simply create their own category on the speedrunning website? Is it a matter where a few vocal individuals don't want to use O-Powers and have decided that no one else can ever use them under any recognized category? That seems incredibly unfair, if so.

The difference in approach towards rereleases between the Pokemon and Zelda communities has always been interesting. The latter makes a point of deliberately exploiting emulation inaccuries of official releases to their fullest extent. P.S. My favourite banned tech is storing an ACE payload in your sram before you start the run, instead of fully erasing savedata.

I think the biggest reason for that is that Zelda games have been officially emulated since the GameCube with the Wind Waker bonus disc that has OoT and the NES games on it. Compare that to Pokemon whose only official emulated releases were the Gen 1 and 2 VC releases on 3DS, where they were much better emulated than OoT on GC.

@@piratebear3126 As the video mentions, they were emulated in Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2, which were released during the life of the Gameboy games themselves. Personally, I'm inclined to believe that it's purely a social accident which way each community went, and that it could just have been the reverse.

@@piratebear3126 Also, Ruby and Sapphire (but no other gen 3 games) could officially be emulated on a Gamecube through Pokemon Box by selecting "Go to Adventure". There was also the Gameboy Player but that isn't emulation, it's a complete GBA strapped onto the bottom of the Gamecube.

I think Outside trading should have a category, with the caveat that it follows the same rules as theZZAZZglitch’s Pokemon RBY A Button challenge: all games involved have to be from the same region and start from blank save files. If someone can make playing 2 games faster, they should have a category where they get to that because that’d could be fun and interesting to watch.

This would be interesting to see, though unless it requires beating both games I think it would mostly devolve into using the other game to get an extra starter, trading it over and then abandoning that game. It might have more use in the diploma category. For instance with Red and Blue, Red could play normally while Blue grabs a starter and races to Celadon to grab a spare Eevee, then resets and repeats to get the remaining starter and the 3rd Eevee as well as exclusives. It'd also have to pick up Moon Stones since one game doesn't have enough of those to evolve everything that needs them. The extra game could also help level pokes to evolve them. Why the "same region" restriction though? I could see swapping pokes back and forth between Johto and Sinnoh working. Cross-region playthroughs like that are only really viable in gen 4 and 6 though. 1/2 have a 24 hour waiting period to unlock the Time Capsule, 3 has stupid postgame BS you have to do in FRLG before you can trade with Hoenn, all other pre-Switch gens only have one region available, all inter-gen transfers are postgame, and Switch games don't really trade between regions in the same gen unless closing the game to launch Home counts.

@@joemck85 The ABC rule set only requires entering one Hall of Fame, so that’d be the same here. And I should have clarified that the region was real-world region since early games have some crazy glitches when JP and western games trade. And any number of games would be allowed, so having Gen 8, 9, and Home on a second Switch would be allowed. Different in-game regions open up cool possibilities. Stadium 2 and Gold let you transfer a Fresh Water to Red to skip Rock Tunnel and optimize your city order better. Crown Tundra infamously lets you get legendary Pokemon early that could be used in the other Switch games via Home. As long as Bank is open on 3DS, I’m pretty sure that Gen 7 can receive Pokemon from Gens 1, 2, and 6. HGSS’s Pal Park is in Fuchsia City, giving you access to Gen 3 Pokemon and Items for the Kanto Gyms and Red if you play simultaneously.

I thought o-powers would be banned because of how recharging works. I think if the runner walks in real life they recover faster or something? The actual reason is so lame, allow o-powers already! (And ban walking with the console while or before playing😂)

what speed do you have to take for the walking to take effect but I think using a travellator would be so unfair but its kind of a bit unfair wrong for people who are disabled as you have to have hands on a device and move

Banning all trading and online features makes sense for speedruns. Traditionally, the goal of a speedrun is to determine how fast you can complete a game from scratch to the credit roll. There may have been RNG depending on the game, but there was never any update or anything: You'd pick up a new copy of the game, and you would always get the same experience. And it's actually important for TAS speedruns. Nowadays games are more complicated. They get patches and DLCs, they can be played multiplayer, they can have time-limited features, etc. But for the speedrunning community, the core remains important: it must truly be from scratch, and it must be reproducible. So any multiplayer feature is always banned unless they also record the other participants starting from scratch at the same time (and that usually results in a new category as well), they always try to have every speedrunner running the same patches and DLCs for fair comparaison (different versions result in different categories), and they also avoid any time-limited feature unless they can reliably be brought back up by changing the system's date (typically day-night systems)

I know Mario Odyssey also has speedruns where the speedrunner activates 2-player mode and controls P2 with their feet. Requires pretty insane coordination! That said, there doesn't seem to be any rule stating it can't be done with an actual 2nd speedrunner. I'm not sure if anyone did it, but I would think it's not the norm because timing of 2-player tricks is important, and it's easier to get the right timing by yourself, especially if something unexpected happens and you have to improvise.

Funnily enough, when I speedrun a Pokemon game, I have a tendency to use Home or Bank to trade the starter to a completed save, level it up to it’s final form, and then trade it back I only casually speedrun, mainly to get “1 per save” Pokemon such as legendaries rather than train to be on a leaderboard

I get unfairness and literal improper emulation bans but I never get any% categories that ban strategies that make the speedrun really easy, uncompetative, short, etc. It’s called any% for a reason. Just make a separate “more fun” category. Kind of defeats the point if a world record any% speedrun isn’t the fastest way a game can be beaten.

Another point against allowing Online Features in Speedruns. That would eventually lead to an unfair skewing of runs once said features are gone.

Maybe speedrunning should have their own community leaderboards while keeping the objective leaderboards free of any potential opinionated ideas. Like an objective category could be something like "Any%" where any official hardware is accepted and any glitches are accepted. Or 100% where any glitch is accepted but you have to run the game to completion before you can say you actually beat it. While a "community category" could be put in place, so if one discord server decides they want any% to be on certain hardware only on certain hardware revisions can be put in place with very specific glitches banned, they can do that on their version of any%, while another server may want only emulation to be the way to run their version of any%. That way new players who decide "Hey I like this game and want to run it, but I don't want to read 10 years of community patch notes to be able to find out what I can or can't do in it, I'll just run this other version that lets me do whatever" without having to deal with potential community drama or all that red tape.

I'm not sure about illegal movesets, it could probably slide on bank but not home. Illegal shinies work if they were caught with the proper OT, found location, etc.

I think it was mostly cause the console bans were a very old ruling that never got lifted, and with how accessible emulator is noone has had a real reason for speedrunning on N64 or SuperGameboy!

"Why arent you allowed to do X?" No one is stopping you. Speedrunning had a massive growth in old NES games when runners started to ignore rules banning glitches. If you think a run of Pokemon games with these features would be interesting, then get a community together to run the game that way. O power percent looks pretty uninteresting so i can understand banning it, but if all these commenters want to play it, they should lead by example. Although, i think it would be hilarious for XY speed runs to require 4K steps on your 3DS each day for the optimal O Power recovery rate

Seriously… there’s not really any such thing as “banned”. It’s more like, “here’s the rules for Categories 1, 2, and 3” - Nobody can stop you from defining “Category 4” and starting a timer (regardless of whether anyone has any interest in running it, or hosting a leaderboard on any specific website) There’s at least 2 different games that literally nobody was speedrunning until I did, but that never stopped me. I just said, “huh, this would be fun to speedrun” (Star Wars for NES, and Crystal Caves for DOS, to be precise) As long as you have a video game, and a timer running, it’s a speedrun. Use any rules you want, as long as you are consistent with yourself. Speedrunning is primarily a self-improvement exercise, where you challenge yourself to compete against your best time and set new PBs. It shouldn’t matter in the slightest whether anyone else runs your game/category or not (though it certainly can be nice to have that added community)

It's because it's a glitched move so it would ruin the integrity of a glitchless run to allow it, but you can still use it in non-glitchless categories.

It’s because the main Pokemon categories are often “Any% Glitchless” Many other speed games allow pretty much any glitch, but in Pokemon Red/Blue (for example), you can beat the game with 0:00 still on the in-game timer by using ACE to warp to the credits Ultimately this isn’t a particularly interesting speedrun, so most people run the glitchless category (which in Gen 4, includes banning the Rage glitch… though I don’t know the specifics of whether Gen 4 can be ACE-ed in such a manner, or what a glitched run would look like)

Poké Transporter has a legality checker that is intended to prevent Pokémon obtained or modified through external devices or modified by a glitch such as the Rage glitch from passing through. However, it does not prevent all illegitimate Pokémon, and does stop some legitimate Pokémon. - Bulbapedia
