Weirdest Exempt Railroad Crossing Ever In Snow! Defect Detector Audio, Mason & Woodlawn Ohio Trains

Unusual exempt railroad crossing in Mason Ohio with train in snow. Railroad crossing explained better. Also a defect detector with full audio on CSX mainline out of Cincinnati at Woodlawn Ohio. The exempt railroad crossing is on Indiana & Ohio Railway on a lightly used industrial railway spur. I filmed this crossing a couple other times and this time I tried to explain that there is more to the crossing other than being exempt. Exempt does not mean that the crossing is not used. It only means that commercial passenger and hazardous materials vehicles are exempt from the requirement to stop prior to entering the crossing. At crossings without this sign , commercial vehicles that carry hazardous materials or have the capacity for 16 passengers including the driver are required to stop to verify that there is no train approaching. At exempt crossings, it is safer if they just pass on through unless ordered to stop. I did research for this definition. There are numerous requirements for exempt railroad crossings but I am only covering the main definition. Here is more information on exempt crossings: www.utc.wa.gov/regulated-indu... In addition, this crossing has signals at both ends for the train. The lineside signals stay on red until the train approaches and the traffic signals are activated for vehicle traffic to stop. When all the traffic signals are red, the train will get a green signal to approach the crossing and a crew member will walk the train across. Also notice in the video that there is a special train signal that lights up in the middle of the intersection over top of the road. Another interesting thing about this crossing is that it is on an angle through the middle of a busy intersection and there is a bike trail that crosses here. Now put all of that together and you have the weirdest crossing in Ohio. This time I was able to show the lineside signal for the train changing from red to green and I show the flashing train signal over the middle of the intersection at 01:41. The second part of this video shows a defect detector on a busy CSX line that is also used by Norfolk Southern and Amtrak. I have shown this detector before and explained it. • Defect Detectors In Ac... This video has the audio improved so that you can clearly hear everything that it transmits. I held my radio next to the camera so that it could be heard. The purpose of this video is to play the audio of the detector. Any cheap pocket scanner tuned to the proper radio frequency will work for this. Hopefully this video clears up the questions asked from the other videos. Filmed spring of 2021. Thanks for watching! Back by popular demand! This time I filmed it from a different angle and tried my best to explain why this video is so unusual. Here is more information on this industrial spur crossing without gates: www.utc.wa.gov/regulated-industries/transportation/regulated-transportation-industries/railroads/general-criteria-crossing-exempt-status

The car loaded with 'telephone poles' that had something dragging reminds me of them old days before hot box detectors. In those days, roller bearings were the exception and not the rule. When a priority train passed with us, of course, in a siding, the ground crew stationed themselves on both sides to check the train. You had to be careful because chains or metal bands on some flats were dragging the ground. Good stuff, as always, JT.

What’s cool about all the Jawtooth videos are the short line railroads. I love mainline action but the short lines are just neat to see in action. Country scenes, out of the way spots, even switching cars into industrial customers. Very cool. Happy Easter Jawtooth to you and your family.

WOW! I had not realized that intersection was there. Over in the 700 block of Tylersville Road (Behind you in the opening shots) you can see the big tower with the bulge in the middle. That is a rather historic site, one of the last of those Blaw-Knox towers which are actually two towers, one stacked atop another upside down tower. Has to do with strength as well as Radio propagation theory. This is the site of WLW-AM Radio's transmitter, which is also historic as it was the only 500,000 Watt radio station in the USA. It ran at that power level from the 30's until shortly after WWII. The signal could be heard over almost the entire nation. You can see the transmitter inside the building on several KZfaq channels, look for WLW Transmitter. We don't do things up that grand any more. Can't believe I didn't see that intersection when I was there. Looking but not seeing, I guess. Many thanks for the location video!

I love watching your videos. It's also neat that sometimes the railcars you video I helped build. That plastic pellet car on the back of that car was built 4 years ago in Muscle Shoals Alabama. I welded the side sheets together as well as the top cord and the side sills which on that car are the main structure of the car. It has no center sill going down the middle of the car like you see on most other railcars.

The sound of wheels is always pleasant to listen to. I am from Stavropol region, Russia, we also have a railway but a dead end, but once there was another built in 1915 which existed only three years On the avatar picture of one of the bridges remaining to this day, this railway began from the port of Tuapse went to Armavir further Stavropol and the village of Divnoy. That's the story.

There was chlorine gas, sodium hydroxide (lye), potassium hydroxide (caustic soda), butadienes (they behave like butane gas), some sort of molten salt perhaps and last, but not least, LP gas. lol JT, I'm having a hard time finding a video of yours that doesn't have a like from me already. Hit me up on FB and I can shoot you some photos I’ve done with a Mavic Mini. Might be a cool investment for your videos and especially to video accidents 🤔🤔🤔 You don’t need a drone license for it and it has a decent range and video quality for a small size drone. The newest ones are a little better now , mines an original version. Take care brother.

That is a very interesting crossing. First time I've ever seen a road traffic light, vs. a railroad signal, used for a train. I'm actually pretty surprised that they DID do that, since it would have to be the township that paid for it, vs. the railroad paying for its own signals.

I don't know about elsewhere in Canada, but in Ontario hazmat does not stop for crossings. A much safer scenario for all involved. Stopping for crossings creates more risk than it reduces. Rear end collisions, increased time to clear the crossing, and stalling on the tracks due to illegal, and improper shifting of gears all contribute to more hazmat crashes than just safely crossing with the flow of traffic
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 3 жыл бұрын

Yes - this is a crazy crossing! I don't know about safety though. I always have concern when the Conductor has to walk out in the intersection. I don't know who the customer is, but this crossing was probably built a long time before the build up to what we see today :) The Defect Detector is cool - if you ever want to see inside one, there is a Mark Clay McGowan on YT who worked for UP and did a series on RR equipment. That was a very long train without a DPU!

That crossing was a 3 way for years until the late 80`s early 90`s when they extended Tylersville Road across Reading Road and tied it into old Western Row Road. When I was a kid, my grandparents lived about a mile from there further North off Reading Road. When the Pennsylvania Railroad was still in business, I could hear trains going through there all hours of the day or night till around 1975. It was a pretty busy line at one time, now it`s just a spur line that would still be a through route from Cincinnati if only they had left the 4 miles of track in the ground from Brecon to South Mason. Another bonehead decision made by railroad bean counters that has bit them in the ass ever since.

Yes and they wanted to reconnect it and couldn't because of the NIMBYs. I didn't know it was a 3 way. Have a great weekend Scott!

Yooper Chook! I've got one, too! What's all that white stuff on the ground? So that red truck ran a red light at 1:40? I love to see those coil cars. I link them to the economy. More coils, better economy. Man! That's a long train! If you subtract the 12 axles for the engines, I figure it's 150 cars. How do find defect detectors. Silver boxes with antennas? Chase a train and listen to the scanner? Look at the track at every silver box? Are they on a map? I'd like to find some around here. Thanks. Great video as always!
