Twenty years ago, psychologist Arthur Aron discovered that four minutes of uninterrupted eye contact increases intimacy and brings people closer together. Using this discovery, Amnesty International Iceland decided to carry out a simple project where refugees living in Iceland, from Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Syria and Somalia sat opposite native Icelanders and looked into each other's eyes for minutes. The results were overwhelmingly positive as the video that Amnesty International, Icelandic section produced to record these encounters, clearly demonstrates.
The Icelandic film and TV production company Pegasus produced the film.
The film shows natural, spontaneous reactions between people meeting for the first time in a crude, unfinished building in Reykjavík, stripped of all cultural signs.
Today, when the world appears rife with division and conflict, it is always worthwhile to look at everything from another person’s perspective. Too often, what gets lost in the numbers and headlines is the suffering of actual people, who, like us, have families, friends, their own stories, dreams and goals. What if we stopped for just a moment and looked at who they really are?
Borders exist between countries, not people. And it is imperative that our governments start putting people before borders and their own short-term political gain.

Many Icelanders naively think that they can have unlimited immigration and their way of life WON'T CHANGE. This is NOT TRUE. What makes Iceland Iceland is not the land, resources, or even it's laws. It's the PEOPLE. If you change the people, Iceland will change, and likely not in a way that native Icelanders, of all different political and cultural beliefs, want. Muslim culture and beliefs, for example, are, not just different, but are almost completely the opposite of native Icelanders and they refuse to ever integrate. What do you think will be the result? When they are enough of the population, they will begin to make cultural and political demands that go counter to native Icelander preferences. It could also eventually lead to the "balkanizaton" of Iceland. It doesn't matter if the Icelandic government tries to settle muslims all over the country. The process has already begun in other European countries. Recently, a large group of French military generals sent a communication to the French government that civil war is inevitable unless something can be done to stop the increased balkanization of France due to the unrestricted muslim immigration. Think this through, people, before it's too late. If some people are legitimate war refugees (most aren't, by far), allow them temporary safety, but repatriate them to their native countries as soon as possible.

This is difficult to watch. Because..the emotions are one thing..but there is a tint of fakeness there...People are only nice to each other if there is mutual benefit and Icelanders are no different. I don't like IceLandic people. I have always felt that their generosity is never genuine. But looking here, it seems they are trying to do something good .

Iceland should accpet only Syrians and Palestinians who are trying to escape war. Others are not really refugees, they are just moving to live on the benefits.

F that sheeeet! As a Icelandic human being I can tell you this is so fake. There are 44 countries in Europe. Iceland is literally the most isolated country in Europe with Faroe Islands. We have the Atlantic Ocean between us and the next European country. Yet somehow these people need to flee from their homes, jump over 15-20 countries to get to Iceland. Again, the most isolated country in all of Europe. Yet they feel the need to come to Iceland. What the FUUUU is wrong with all the other countries from their home to the northern most country in Europe, the most isolated country in Europe. Going from Nigeria, Pakistan and whatever countries they come from. Jumping over 20 healthy countries just to fkn be in Iceland. F Islam and F em all.

The comments under this video are really disappointing. These people are fellow humans, not thugs. Governments can topple in an instant and people who never thought they would ever be refugees are forced to escape in order to save their lives and their families lives, often experiencing horribly traumatic things in the process. Every single one of you watching this would do the same if your country suddenly became unsafe. Have some fucking humanity.

Most of the people who seek asylum are NOT legitamate refugees but are simply wanting to live in a more economically successful country. Have some f...... brains.

Also, if it were true that they're just trying to escape to "safety" then they'd want to return when it was safe again, right? They don't. They always fight deportation once it's safe to return. Plus, if was just "safety" they'd pick another closer safe muslim country to escape to. Nope. They always pick the most prosperous European country. You're being deceived (or, are you one of the deceivers?).
