As the nation’s first military academy, West Point prepares young men and women to become officers in the U.S. Army.
There's a unique, free university in the US where students graduate not just with degrees but as officers of the US Army.
Instructed by Congress to train 4,400 cadets a year and up there in terms of academic rigour and student success with the likes of Harvard and Yale, West Point produces 1,000 second lieutenants a year.
In exchange for a free education at West Point, graduates are required to serve five years in the US Army and an additional three years in the reserves.

I was always told the term “Cow” for 2nd class was related to the days when the first leave for a cadet was Xmas of their 2nd class year related to the saying “till the cows come home” for a long time and a yearling for the third class is just a term for a young cow. @PrinceAnt722
@PrinceAnt722 16 күн бұрын
@user-vq5hb5cp4n If the graduate is still active, their letter can carry some weight in the selection process. I remember seeing West Point cadets working side by side with my Drill Sargeants when I was in Basic Training. One of the cadets was prior enlisted as an MP before enrolling at the Academy. She received her letter from her battalion commander, also a graduate from the Point.
@user-vq5hb5cp4n
@user-vq5hb5cp4n 16 күн бұрын
@@PrinceAnt722 Your confusing recommendation letters and nominations. Recommendation letters are just references to help the admissions committee get insight into the candidate. A nomination is the legal ability to compete for an appointment. When you receive an appointment, the appointment will be charged under one of your nominations. Other than that, you are correct that a rec letter from an academy grad does carry weight. The prior enlisted MP your referring to was nominated by the battalion commander. He may have also written a rec letter. The nominations from CO's is only available to prior enlisted soldiers. Not just any academy grad can do it. The CO doesn't actually have to be an academy grad. Being an academy grad has nothing to do with it. It has to be a CO of a unit. Further that CO can only nominate their own soldiers.

What is the medal ribbon Cadet English wears?
@lynntaylor349
@lynntaylor349 20 күн бұрын
national defense service ribbon - basically a free-lunch award because everyone that joins the army or navy or any u.s. military branch automatically gets one, as long as he joins during a time of war - which is why he has one, since he said he is in year two which means he joined about 2 years ago, when they were still showering these things out, as anyone that joined after 2001 (9/11) was considered serving during the "war on terrorism", which lasted until the u.s. pulled out of afghanistan in 2021, and given how slow things go in the pentagon at times, they finally decided they would stop awarding these starting in 2023, therefore this had been the first ribbon for anyone who signed up over the past 20 years or so, and he was among the last to get it (until the u.s. gets into another active war, that is) the interesting thing is he also has the parachutist badge on top of that ribbon, which is arguably much more meaningful - in the usual army it would be the other way around, you need to first prove yourself by earning tons of awards (ribbons) and demonstrate that you are the pride of the unit, before your unit would even consider sending you to airborne school to get that parachutist badge, because every training you go to the unit has to fight for the slot and budget and navigate all that hassles in the bureaucratic machine, so they generally only send the most decorated and best deserving ones to trainings like airborne, air assaults, etc. unless of course there are mission requirements, such as the unit being an airborne unit like the 82nd, then they would just send you no matter what. but normally a guy with a lone ribbon that everybody else has would hardly be looked at to go to any specialty trainings at all. I suppose just getting accepted to west point is considered an achievement, plus west point has all the budgets in the world, so they could just send their students to whatever trainings they wanted.

First off... - West Point is NOT the only American Military Academy; please reference the US Naval Academy, the US Air Force Academy, and the US Coast Guard Academy; Marines are trained at Annapolis - It was THE first government-established military educational institution, ahead of the French at Saint Cyr, the British at Sandhurst, and the German General Staff school(s)

"a nomination from a senator and have someone connected to the military" In the so called land of freedom where everyone is supposed to be born equal, how is this supposed to be fair? It sounds elitic. It's a serious question, maybe there somthing I don't understand.
@user-xw1jm3tu7x

Hey! Im going this summer so I can give some insight. In every state, there are 3 different pathways to getting a nomination. A senator, congressman, or vice president nomination (also a presidential nomination but thats only for kids whos parents are veterans). Each typically have an application that you fill out and submit (a few essays, list your EC's, SAT/ACT, GPA, transcripts etc.). Depending on the size of the state, the congressman will usually then interview you if you are competitive and the senator may or may not depending on how many appliations they get. VP doesnt because too many applicants so they just pick the most qualified based on essays, SAT/ACT, GPA, ECs etc. You must get a nomination to get considered for a service academy. Then once nominations are submitted, West Point ultimately decides who is most competitive of the pool of applicants with nominations. Those kids get in (typically 2-3/10 nominated from every district). Connections have nothing to do with it. It is fully merit based.

He has a GF who adores him and hes doing well. Unless you are the dean or higher up at West Point who has a way of measuring how well recent graduates are doing and have data to back it up, can it. The academy still equips and creates amazing people. Just because there are some random woke elements here and there (WHICH BTW EVERY MAJOR UNIVERSITY HAS AND ESPECIALLY EVERY PRESTIGOUS ONE) does not diminish the overall quality of the cadets. And furthermore, as somone who is going there next year, I fully plan on doing my absolute best to uphold its reputation. I want nothing more than to make the world a better place and to protect the ideals we hold in America. Those all sounds really important and interesting tbh. To really fix deep rooted issues like low confidence in the military, decades of discrimination and the covering up of nasty crimes, and how to keep soldiers mentally healthy as well as physically, you’re going to need to be critical of your organization. Can’t be patriotic without working on fixing what’s broken.

Not much alike at all. As I understand it Sandhurst IS NOT a four year full-on university setting, nor does it have an emphasis on engineering and scientific subjects, does not have vast training areas, huge dining halls, athletic teams and facilities, and on and on. Totally different approaches to officer training. Of course a lot of US military officers come out of regular college ROTC and also up through the ranks OTC.
