Heat from Welding can move metal around. And that is mostly due to shrinkage. But knowing that fact can help you do choose a weld sequence that helps the part come out straight.

It’s not just the quality of the welds or the depth of knowledge that impresses - it the generosity of the author. I think the community is grateful to you for all three.

my top tip- the sliding square should never be used for checking square. as the sliding square slides it gradually wears down unevenly. always use a ruler and 3+4=5.

Now I know for a fact that our cell phones spy on us but it's crazy that this video came up because I was actually looking for it on Jody's website the other day cuz I got a project coming up and I didn't say anything physically I just went on Jody's site and looked for the video I couldn't find it and that was it I never mentioned anything about it other than in my head and now this video pops up, freaky. Jody if you see this, if you had some 1x2 rectangular stainless tubing and your making a mitered 90 degree elbow, the hard way, with 5 gores, 4 weld joints. Should I gap each weld joint a hair on the throat side, then tack, then follow weld sequencing?

If you haven't found out yet, the stuff that comes out of those dusting cans is highly flammable.

When i went to school we made several V-joints with thick steel, Worked around the shrinkage by placing a MMA stick (OK 48.00) on the starter side, And a bigger electrode on the other side.

I ran across this video and was so amazed to see someone doing exactly the same thing I did for a living for about 3 years. I learned a great deal about TIG welding 1 1/2 inch square stainless and TIG welding in general from my employer. He covered a great deal of the squaring and shrinkage issues in his instructions to me and I was very happy to learn these skills. I learned even more from this very informative video. I give you a perfect mark for showing accurate and very useful information. Excellent video ! !
