For decades, I swore I would never buy a Mora. I almost buckled when they made the Garberg, but the price kept me safe. Then, one day, the Eldris came out. I now have five Eldris knives in fire kits. Never got a BK9. I wanted the Junglass II instead. I did buy a BK7 many many years ago. Had a very nice custom kydex sheath made for it. Liked it a lot. Then I got a TOPS Tahoma Field Knife. Almost immediately the BK7 became the (soon to be) wife’s knife. It eventually became her truck knife because she replaced it with the TOPS Longhorn Bowie. Mumma Bear likes knives too 😎

You won't regret buying your BK-9. I bought mine less than a year ago, an it's become my go-to knife for processing wood and branches on my property. I haven't even had to sharpen it yet. I know the Beckers aren't much to look at, but after you use it, you will love it!

The after-market micarta handle scales are basically a requirement. The most readily available version are tan, with an unpolished finish. That's handy, because this lets you dye them (if you want to). Rit makes dyes specifically for synthetic fabric. Remember the resulting color will be more like a tint than a dye, due to the tan micarta being very dense. Don't expect vivid results. I hung each scale from a vertical wire, which in-turn attached to a horizontal chopstick, that sat across the top of a tall / narrow metal pot. Keep it just bellow a boil or it might foam-up on you. Getting rid of that god-awful enamel on the blade makes a huge difference too! A few rounds of cold-bluing (or browning), and it'll start to look pretty good!

This is probably one of the most expensive knives around. It's like a Crosman 2240 air pistol. They both start off cheap but by the time you finish modifying it you have spent quite a bit of money. It's kind of fun in a way like a hobby you can personalize it and come up with something pretty decent in the end. The Esee is great but I think this is a better large combat knife because of the point and the hollow handle gives more weight to the blade when you're swinging it. I pulled mountain bike tubes over the handles to give it extra thickness and a much better grip. I got to see your comparison between this and the Esee.

I stripped mine and put the black micarta scales on it. Huge improvement! I still haven't replaced the sheath yet, but I will be doing that. Just having a hard time trying to decide if I want leather or kydex. I'm normally an old school leather guy, so most likely that'll be the route I take. I have both the BK7 and BK10, both in leather sheaths, but I went with nice ironwood scales on them. They look really good, but being as the 9 is bigger and an obvious chopper, I figured the micarta was safer. I'd hate to see that big boy flying through the air cuz my sweaty hands lost their grip. It does suck that we have to spend another $100 or more to make it better after we already spent over a hundred on the actual knife, but damn..it's such a good knife once you get it done to your liking!

I have been pleased with the Patriot Leather sheath I had made. However, I think a kydex sheath from AZ Welke would be a better choice.

It sucks when the handle doesn’t measure up on an otherwise fine blade. I bought a Case Bowie 20 years ago and was disappointed that the handle was too small. Ended up giving it to a friend for his 50th birthday.

I was hoping I would see some big Becker's on here sometime. Its a little disappointing to hear you decided not to like them before trying one. Maybe the BK9 will change your mind. 🙂 A lot of great knives out there but Becker is my favorite fixed blade. I have every Becker. I also like and buy Ontario, Esee and Tops. My favorite Becker's are the BK9, the BK20 Bundok Bowie and the BK21 Reinhardt Kukri. The Kukri has an 18 inch blade and is so much fun. I am kind of new to your channel and enjoying it a lot.

You're just use to the buck 124 "man handles". The bk9 was my other option versus the Forged Survivalist but in some of the reviews the bk9 kept getting stuck in the wood because of the coating. I still may get one after your review coming up.

@MilehighK5

I have a lot of Beckers. I have stripped some, including 2 BK9's, and it performs much better if you dont mind taking care of naked carbon steel. But there is something else you can do. The day I get a new becker I will go over the black coating with fine sandpaper I think I used 800 and then 1000 grit last time. Thin it out, get it nice and smooth and it makes a big difference without removing it.

I really don’t understand the following of Becker. It like buying a overpriced knife piece meal. I did buy a SP53 because I don’t know what’s gonna happen to Ontario. The kabar I like the most is the kabar cutless machete. It’s a unbelievable chopper.

It's a good knife, but the scales and the sheath do suck. Here in Europe it costs 160 €. +60 for the scales, +80 for a good sheath... It's too much. I'm glad I bought my BK 5 a few years back for about 70€. Enjoy the knife though!
