We have successfully shortened the roof to mimic what the 1st generation Thunderbirds (1955-1957) look like but the work isn't over. We now need to re-fabricate the back window opening so that we can use the original back window 🚨

There is nothing wrong, with things going wrong. It is all about the end result. You are showing everything as it happens Chad and Jolene. Mistakes happen in life. It is all about the way you handle them. Then how you fix it. As always you explain it and it means that we know what not to do We learn from your mistakes. Thanks for the lesson. Have a Wonderful day guys.

@@harryharry4724 I am someone who will accept, if and when I do make a mistake. However I apparently have a version of Autism. Look it up. Perfectionism is part of it. If I do anything it is either perfect or not at all. I have never made a mistake in 12 years of my current profession. Which is a trade in some countries. There wouldn't be many that could say that. However, how about showing respect. People are on here because they enjoy Chad and Jolene's content. I have shown respect to a guy that I thoroughly enjoy watching. I am hoping I might lift a man's self esteem or at the very least show how much I care and respect him. Not try to tear him or anyone else down. There is too many people making this world a sad place. How about making someone feel good about themselves. Keyboard warriors disrespecting others isn't the right thng to do.

I’ve read a lot of comments about removing the rear pkg tray and moving it forward. For those not familiar. The trunk has a ton of support for the trunk to operate correctly not to mention the tension of the rods that help hold it open once you open the trunk lid. Then you’d have to figure out how to realign the trunk for fitment issues and still have to replace what you tore out. It’s not easy to just remove that top piece of metal where the pkg tray only. It’s welded on like it’s holding the car together. Chad has the right idea just geometry a little off. I’ve yet to see him not figure it out to where it didn’t look nice or not function correctly. Just keep watching he will blow our minds this GUY!!

Chad , my dad bought a 1958 Thunderbird brand new. July 21, 1958. I drove the car in high school. I joined the Navy days after HS graduation 1979. My Dad put the car in his garage. 2008 May. Dad told me it was time to take the old bird home. I spent 10 months restoring the old Thunderbird in time for my sister's wedding at the Heresy Hotel. 58 was unique for the rear window height. 4 inches lower than 59, 60 Also 4 wheel coil suspension. 59,60 leaf rear. Also the 352 interceptor made 350hp with a 3.10 rear these car were fast on the interstates,

I enjoy your videos. You are quite a talent! I would suggest removing six to eight inches somewhere between the rear window and the tail lights. The reason I suggest this additional modification is because once you mount the HUGE rear bumper on the '58 it's going to have a very large rear, which I don't believe will be too appealing to the eye. Take six to eight inches from between the rear wheel and the tail end. You can "HILTZ" the fins to make them look just right. Again, I enjoy your modification talents, discipline, and creativity. Have a great year! Lazz

chad, use the narrow yellow section which fits up to the window to check your placement as you go forward. place it up to your pinch weld/square stock for shape. if you place it in the original position you can trace the original pinch weld for height & compare it to the new one. This is now my favorite build, replacing Elvis. Keep up the good work.

Your brake and metal shear is the exact same models I used back in the early 80's when I was in the Marine Corps repairing aircraft sheet metal. Man, I miss those days! I would love to find a brake and shear like that somewhere. I wish I could have called you and got you to stop and look at it from the rear to realize what was wrong! Still, awesome work though Brother!! And, of course, Jolene did great on the camera work as always. Matter of fact, that is how I realized what was going wrong.

Why not just find a junkyard with the pinchweld and a trunk lid with rear damage ( rusted or dented ) and cut the front section of the trunk to fill the gap that you will have remaining. I did these kinds of mods for over 30 years . Your doing nice work so far and I give Jolene credit for helping with the welding so you can hold everything in alignment.

Tip: you may know already for sweeping and keeping dust down while you do the shop floors. Sprinkle a little water lightly around before you sweep and it will keep the dust settled way more. Great find on that Hudson. Very rare cars, especially in original cond. Hopefully mechanical can be up and running as as driver. I'd do a nice up dated interior and keep outside patina. Glad y'all got a YT channel, it's the new "TV". Tv shows are to hectic. One of the possible solutions to fitting the back window lip in is to remove it from its present location, lay it on a flat steel surface, weld it here, wedge a large cold chisel in between the square stock and the 14 gauge, and pound it in and bend the lip to the corresponding angle of the back window glass. The lip is tack welded to the square stock at the bottom and it should bend easily. Weld both ends and add some coathanger welds to the middle parts and it should be strong enough to seat the rear window. 14 gauge was a bit this to use as a window lip, even 18 might be overkill, but workable. You sometimes have to be two or three steps ahead in your thinking and interruptions around you don't help either. Chad should be thinking about what he is going to do with the back seat area as he re-works the package tray area in that location. Does he use the extra space for sound equipment or storage bins, beer coolers, or whatever? Maybe Fina needs a place to sit since it became a two-seat car!

Hi Chad & Jolene & Fina how has your day gone? I am curious why you could not have cut out the entire back shelf and moved it forward. Was it because the trunk hinges are connected to it? It would have slid right under the sail panels and closed in the rest of the 1/4 panels at the back where they are open. I am not there with the car so you know better than me if it could be done. Also, make sure you check the fit of the width of the glass as well because of shrinking the back half of the roof. Be back tomorrow to learn more.

Totally unrelated to this project... except for it being a Ford...... But, I would love to see Chad locate a 1952-1956 Ford Mainline 4-door sedan. And then modify it, to create a "Chad version" of the Ford Mainline Coupe Utility! (Especially since his recent trip to Australia.) I was reminded of the Ford Mainline today, after seeing today's YT "Junkyard Crawl" video from Steve Magnante, which featured a 1952 Ford Mainline. My first set of in-laws once had a restored 1953 Ford Mainline 4-door sedan, back in the 1980s.

Hi Chad and Jolene! Try removing the square tube/square stock again from the car and get the angle correct on the flat steel first. This is important to get the correct position of the Square stock as it looks like its out of position and needs to come backwards about 1/4" cardboard reference points taken every 4" should help on the original pinch weld and then bend the flat steel to match. then flip the new piece upside down on the original pinch weld to check how close it is. Perhaps 1/8" of error is ok but not any more than that. If that all makes sense. Its only a mistake if you get the car in top coat and find the window doesn't fit. Sneaky bastard metal doing strange things is at foot 😀😀

Watching the rear widow lip issue, and IMO, I believe Jolene may be on to something when she suggested cutting of the existing panel and moving it forward. I think if you tacked the forward end of the trunk to the existing shelf, disconnected the trunk hinges, leaving the section behind the existing widow pocket in place, cut and slide the necessary metal forward to mate back to the roof as it was originally. Then, of course, you would have to rebuild the hinge brackets and fill in the missing metal. If you didn't like the size of the interior parcel shelf, you could tailor it to suit your taste. Just a suggestion.

Hi C & J I thought you were going to cut the rear parcel shelf and deck out and just move it 12 inches forward so the window frame lower lip would line up. Then resolve the gap forward of the trunk. I have never chopped a top or moved a roof but the people I have watched do it claim the windows are the hardest part of the job. During the chop its the windows that must be aligned first and then the roof cut to fit . That way you don't end up with holes in the windows and glass you can't get to fit. If you rolled up the door glass first you would have done the job a little different. Keep at it its looking good.

1. Use brake to make a flat piece to go between the old package shelf and where it now needs to be. 2. use that piece of square stock on top of the new flat surface. 3. Shim as need to get the correct angle. Getting proper alignment for the glass over a void is going to be much tougher than over a solid surface. The find a ratty old truck lid to cut out for the upper body surface. Just the opinion of an industrial fabrication designer.

I am worried about the glass fit. Double check the clear dimension up and down in the center of the glass. It must be just right for the glass and gaskets to drop in correctly. I assume that you will extend the sculpted shape of the trunk to the bottom of the window. That might give you some inspiration for another detail like the silly third tail light.

I would have taken a measurement at each end of the rear windscreen, one in the centre and then welded it in to those dimensions. I think that I would have calculated the angle of the lip that the glass sits against also. That way it would be bloody close. It's easy for me sitting at home. He's very old school and very keen to jump in and get it done. I think that the proportions are really good but please don't put port hole windows in it, they are really cheesy. Looking good though.

I’m a chicken,😂 I would have left the back part of the roof where it was and slit the roof up, over and down and slid the front part ahead like you did and then added metal between at that (C) pillar lol. Still woulda had a back seat. You’re a hell of a fabricator and feerless!

if you take your square stock remove one side cutting from top corner, and 5 mm back from the bottom this will give you a c channel with the top wider than bottom add flat stock so it is boxed now your have rake for the window

To add the package tray peace next to the trunk fit up to the new window placement. Cut the old package tray peace in half long ways. Then add 12.5” in the middle and it will fit the window and the trunk

I think the square stock will need to be installed level, instead of tilted. Can you weld on the 14 gauge, and then hammer it over for the angle?

Chad…Looking Good! No Port window needed. I thought you would be taking a trip to the junkyard for a Pinch weld, package tray, and trunk lid, for some extra material.

I would have installed the package tray first then applied the "Pinch Weld" to the package tray using the square stock as a guide. I would then bent the "Pinch Weld" to the proper angle using pliers and hammer to get it to the right angle.

You don't always do it the way I would but then again if you did then it wouldn't be yours would it? Love your work ...

The factory started with a flat package tray and added the pinch weld where it was needed. Your adding the package tray last, just a little more difficult.
