"I haven't used it yet, but I'm gonna give it 4 stars" Oh, and I'm sure Weller use an Extech meter held on the tip when they factory calibrate their tools... But hey, at least it's 4k.

The temperature shown on the Extech thermometer was jumping around so much because Joeteck was not holding the thermocouple probe firmly and steadily against the tip of the soldering iron. He needed to clamp them together and wait for equilibration, or he should have used an infrared thermometer. The temperature of a mass can certainly fluctuate, but unless it was designed to, it can’t jump up AND down this fast, especially when cooling is simply occurring in the ambient air.

@@Joeteck you can talk about the irons wire quality (if it will catch fire, if it will burn if you touch it with its own iron), the heating element inside. Literally hundreds of different talking points that have nothing to do with a person's skill to use a soldering iron. I don't think you should talk about things you don't know.

Weller is a well known name and made in the USA. Hakko is a Japanese company with China made accessories and parts. I think the weller will withstand the abuse and use over time vs the Hakko. It compares well to it, but its not made in the USA.

Joeteck Weller has factories in Mexico and Germany. I am unaware of any US based factories. They may have had some US factories in the past but , to my knowledge at this point in time, the 1010 is manufactured in Mexico at this point in time.

all different tips do is change the time for heat transfer to your solder. Same goes for temperature to the thermometer. Most vloggers don't know how to take a proper temperature reading.

I bought one. I was all wow, this is nice, opening the box. The iron takes 45 seconds to heat from 80 to 680 F. Recovery is slow. Heat capacity is low. It's a crappy iron. My old Weller W60P and WTCP60 both run rings around it. Did I get a dud?
@Joeteck

Works great for me. Must be the operator behind the iron
@katzajamas934
@katzajamas934 3 жыл бұрын
@@Joeteck Dude. For the work I do, it's the iron. It does a poor job monitoring the tip temp which makes it slow to respond. For repair/rework, two of the selectable temp tip wellers do a much better job for the same $. One tip for fine work and one for heavier. My old Edsyn can do it with one tip. 2 oz ground plane or a tiny pad.
@infected7258

a lot of the time its the person using it thats the problem, its a really good iron
@katzajamas934

@@infected7258 Compared to my older 60 W Weller with temp control by the tip, that new Weller is much slower to respond tip temp changes. I suppose if it's the best you've used, it's great. For the same money on a new iron I find the Hakko 888D response a bit faster and have one on the bench. I love my old Edsyn and reserve it for delicate work. Would buy a new one but the prices are crazy high. There are a lot of tip options from Hakko. The clone Hakko tips are generally crap though.

@@katzajamas934 yeah those might be it’s drawbacks and I’ve noticed that but I just love how the iron feels on your hand plus I just put the temperature at 350 and it works fine of course when you’re soldering for a long time the iron just can’t maintain the temperature, it’s either like 20 over or 20 under, but meh

An interesting demonstration but I do not know if you have demonstrated a real problem with the Weller. What did you do to calibrate the Extech? Then what is the specified accuracy of the Extech? Knowing that what is percentage difference between to two readings?

@Joeteck 4 жыл бұрын
Extech doesn't need calibration.
@Joeteck

Will be comparing the Hakko and the weller together
@SuperMurrayb
@SuperMurrayb 4 жыл бұрын
@@Joeteck Thanks, Joeteck, but even if the "Extech doesn't need calibration" the difference measured may not exceed the claimed accuracy of the meter and soldering station taken together. The Extech site indicates a basic accuracy of the 421502 as plus or minus (0.05% of reading + 0.6°F). In addition to that there is also the error of the thermocouple itself which is usually about 0.75%. That gives one part of the total accuracy. The soldering station will also have accuracy limits and there will also be a difference expected from measuring the solder end of the tip instead of the base. If the observed temperature difference between the two devices is less than all the allowable errors added together then the soldering station is operating within specified limits and there may be no "issue" with its temperature regulation.
@bobmahler5379
@bobmahler5379 2 жыл бұрын
The Extech thermometer can be calibrated. It may have come with a Certificate of Calibration, often purchased separately, and usually valid for 1 year following initial usage by the purchaser. The Extech manual states that this instrument should be calibrated annually. Joeteck probably does not have the necessary standards to perform the calibration. Third party calibration of thermocouple and RTD thermometers is usually preferred, and would be around $100.00. That’s not overly expensive, but it can exceed the purchase price of a simple, basic thermometer.
@SuperMurrayb
@SuperMurrayb 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobmahler5379 Before I retired I had calibrated many lab instruments to known standards. So is this Extech certificate traceable to an NBS standard or something else? Regardless of that the soldering station has an accuracy limit and so does the temperature meter. If the difference in temperature is less than the sum of the total total errors specified then there may not be a problem. Don't let the false precision of digital displays create the illusion of great accuracy. Thermocouples are not as accurate as thermistors and neither one can compare to a platinum resistance thermometer.
