Trazodone remains among the top 25 prescribed drugs in this country. Approved by the FDA only as an antidepressant, it tends to cause intense drowsiness As a consequence it finds widespread acceptance as a treatment for insomnia rather than its authorized indication. However medical studies fail to confirm its benefits as a sleeping pill, and it lacks approval for this purpose anywhere in the world.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not recommend trazodone and the widely respected Cochrane Collaboration suggests it fails to improve sleep efficiency when tested under laboratory conditions. Consumer Reports advises over-the-counter anti-histamines such as Benadryl instead of trazodone.
No established dose exists for sleep problems. While the dose for depression averages 150 mg in divided doses, doctors regularly prescribe 12.5 mg - 50 mg for insomnia with some boosting recommendations to 300 mg at night.
Developed in the 1960s, trazodone quickly developed a negative reputation due to a long list of side effects. Among the most prominent are cardiac arrhythmias, fainting, dangerous falls in blood pressure on arising and either weight gain or loss. Additionally it causes headache, blurred vision, confusion and may lead to cognitive and motor impairment.
A relatively unique and uncomfortable adverse reaction relates to prolonged painful erections or priapism lasting in excess of 6 hours. This tends to occur early in therapy, often within the first month, and at relatively low doses.
Dangerously low serum sodium concentrations may develop. Symptoms range from headache and difficulty concentrating to memory impairment, confusion and unsteadiness. Unless corrected hallucinations, seizures, respiratory arrest and death may supervene.
For those in need of a sleeping pill, prudence suggests an alternative to trazodone.

I so appreciate this physician. The truth finally. No more gaslighting yiur patients some of you physicians out there that take advantage of sick patients who are placing their lives in your hands to do no harm. You should tell your patients the truth about the medications you are prescribing and are they the best medications for your specific diagnosis. I am thankful that the information is out there so we as patients can be better prepared to advocate for ourselves. Thank you Dr. You are gold dear man.❤

They did studies of the effect of trazodone on the sleep architecture and it did improve sleep continuity. It also is less susceptible for addiction because it acts on the H1-receptors in the brain instead of the GABA-receptor. Advising Benadryl as an alternative is just ridiculous, it has known anti-cholinergic effects which in the long run can damage the brain severely.

this drug acts on h1 receptors too and it can cause heart arrythmias, your answer is not nearly as complete as his, and it seems you picked and chose from what he said and reworded it. He did not advise benadryl, he said it may have less side effects. That is a fact. Its not wise to put words in someones mouth like that and twist others... It seems like you watched this video to hear validation about the drug, and I am a registered nurse that have seen bad side effects with trazadone in many patients. It may take years to see these complications or arrythmias leading to death
@MrSimonscool
@MrSimonscool 3 жыл бұрын
@@Zgheib7 Benadryl does as a matter of fact have more serieus side-effects. Anticholinergics are known to cause torsade-de-pointes, arrythmias and exited delirium (altough the latter in often in overdose). The arrythmias in any anticholinergic are caused by the fact that acetylcholine regulates heart rhythm.

Thank you. Finally I found someone on KZfaq that makes sense about trazodone. I was prescribed it as a sleep aid by my doctor. I had no idea it was actually an anti-depressant. I have to get up multiple times at night to urinate. After taking trazodone for about a month I had two instances of getting up in the middle of the night and feeling like I was going to pass out. I thought I was going to have to call 911. I believe it was because my blood pressure was dropping. I also had bad reaction to gabapentin. I’m not fond of either one after my experiences.

Trazodone really helped me fall asleep on nights where my mind would not settle down. I have bipolar type 1, and insomnia used to be an off and on issue for me...during both manic and depressive phases. However, trazodone provoked constant episodes of sleep paralysis, and I am already prone to this parasomnia condition in general. In short, I had to stop taking it. I now take hydroxyzine for sleep. Like trazodone, it's also a piperazine derivative, and seems to work great. It's relatively safe compared to sedative hypnotics and benzos, and unlike diphenhydramine, it doesn't have the same heavy anti-cholinergic effect that causes that whole "sleepy mind...active body" nuisance. Great stuff!

Bottom line. Ambien is EASY to become addicted to. Getting off Ambien was a personal hell for me. Trazadone is NOT addictive. In the U. S., I went on Trazadone after my Ambien misadventures for 6 years. It quieted my tinnitus, which was a huge factor in how my insomnia played out as well, as well as no ill effects when I moved to Morocco, where Trazadone is unavailable. Now I go to Spain to get my Trazadone. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work quite so well as Trazadone in the U.S. Nonetheless, I am hoping to return to the U.S. next year and begin, again, to get full nights of sleep.

I began having memory loss and not being able to focus at all at work or remember basic tasks. Everything had to be written down for me. I forced myself to queen off of it myself since I felt like my doctor wouldn’t listen to me, had some mental breakdowns due to withdrawing too fast, and got in a car accident that weekend. Admitted to a mental hospital, had manic episodes and seizures from the drug withdrawal. Was prescribed Depakote for the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. I can't believe this guy is basically recommending benzos over trazodone. There's no way that I would recommend a benzo to anyone who's struggling with anxiety or insomnia. First of all, they're highly addictive. Second of all, once you feel the effects of it chances are you won't be taking it as prescribed anymore. Third of all, your body gets used to benzos pretty easily and you'll need to take more and more to reach the desired effect. I don't think this guy has any real life experience with the drugs that he's talking about. There's a big difference between reading something in a textbook and actually having first hand experience with a drug. I'm not sure how safe trazodone is especially for long term use, but I can almost guarantee you that it's safer than benzos.
@jasonfella265
@jasonfella265 Жыл бұрын
The problem in my experience is that doctors prescribe benzos, but don't educate the patient at all on how to take them, and how to not get addicted to them. I've taken benzos for over 10 years and have never had a problem, because I had a conversation with my psychiatrist about how not to get addicted to them. It's not hard, you just have to be aware of what the limit is you can take.

@@jasonfella265 in my opinion,.they can be good for people with phobias like one specific thing that causes them anxiety like public speaking for example. My dr gave this to me yesterday for insomnia,, I have trouble falling asleep. She told me it might take a few weeks to start working,m which made zero sense to me since I'm having a sleeping problem right now, why would I take something that takes weeks to work??? I'm not depressed, I don't have depression, I have a problem falling asleep. I thought she would give me some kind of sedative, something that works a hour after taking it, not something that takes weeks to work. I was told to take half the pill the first week at bedtime (25mg, which seems very low to me) then the next week the whole pill at bedtime. Why are they pushing these anti depressants so much?? why are they so afraid of old fashioned sedatives? this was a dr standing in for my reg dr. I already get palpitations from anxiety, why can't they just give me a damn sedative.

I take Adderall and Trazodone. Trazodone functions as an antidepressant but a side effect is drowsiness unlike any other consumable I've ever had. It's great for insomnia and to just sedate you. If you take it then around 30 minutes you'll be succumbed to the depths of Trazodone. However, it takes about 2 weeks for the antidepressant property to take affect.

I don't doubt that he has some point about risks and side effects, but to be so menacing about the side effects of lower doses of this drug while acting like benadryl is super safe and has minimal side effects gives the impression of bias. Benadryl isn't that friendly. Many of the risks he listed were negative interactions with other drugs -- lots of drugs aren't good in combination with other drugs, that's why our doctors and pharmacist are supposed to look at interactions! I appreciated the information, particularly about mechanism of action and half life and that. But as I said this presentation gives the impression of bias.

I had to see her & that's when she put me on 300mg of Gabapentin at night and the 50mg of Trazodone at the same time at night time. I stopped the trazodone tonight & I won't take it NO more! I took it 1-time last night with my Gabapentin & it made my RLS way worse ALL DAY LONG until now! I just took 300mg of Gabapentin 2 hours ago & I have NO pain. We will see if I am way worse tomorrow now. Wish me luck because I don't know if I will make it to my sleep study in 1 month with this unbelievable pain in my legs!
