Welsh protesters call for cap on second homes

Priced out, sold out: in some parts of North Wales almost 50 percent of the housing is a second home. And tomorrow, Welsh language activists will be holding a protest calling for urgent and radical action which they say is needed to protect those communities. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The Welsh government has promised to consider a range of measures to reduce the impact of second homes, including possible tax changes and new planning rules.

It shouldn't be a complex issue, it's very simple. Places like Switzerland ban people from owning second home's in areas of natural beauty unless you reside there for at least 9 months of the year.

2nd homes should be illegal all across Britain. In a nation with limited land and limited houses, rich bastards profiteering while others are so despearte is simply immoral.

The same issues in Cornwall, local wages can’t compete with well off individuals who can buy a second home for £400k +

100% support from Scotland, it's disgusting that this is being allowed. Luxury 2nd homes should not come at the price of community, culture and general wellbeing.

England has done much to destroy the ability of the Welsh to learn and maintain their own language. It should go without saying that letting rich people buy up holiday homes is also offensive. Freezing locals out of their own locales.

We have the same problem in New Zealand. Only 1/4 houses are owned by someone who only owns 1.

Much as it has been in Cornwall, we in Wales are fed the narrative that we should be grateful for the tourists and the money they bring. Are we to be grateful also to have nowhere to live?

The only solution is greater autonomy to the Welsh home-rule government to statute no holiday homes for non-residence of Wales. But that will never happen in Wales becasue there's too much English politician inference and that influence wants Wales to be a holiday theme-park for wealthy English.

I live in North Devon and we've been having the same problem. I'm in my early 20s and can't even afford to rent whilst people from big cities have flocked here in their hundreds while their (well paying, career-based) jobs are remote. Many places around us have tried banning second homes and holiday homes but with limited success. We've got lots of new builds but even those are too expensive for locals!

Build modern affordable subsidised housing for the working locals, young families etc and ONLY allow those locals to buy them at a fare price. Should they wish to sell in the first 10 years they can pay back the state the discount they received. If you really want people to level up you need to get radical!!!!!!!!!!!

Brexit bounce- sell up the continental holiday home and colonise the Celtic fringe. There’re doing the same in Ireland but funnily enough not in Northern Ireland! Wonder why that part of UK not so desirable for the wealthy English?
