Have you ever wondered why there seems to be loads of Irish and Scottish music, but nothing from Wales?
Did you know that Deck the halls is a Welsh tune? And did you know that it comes from an ancient Celtic bardic tradition? In fact we have a whole ton of music, songs, and traditions that have ancient origins, including the Mari Lwyd and the world’s oldest harp music.

The story told a bit before 13:50 is fabulous: the Welsh peasants did not hit their oxen from behind, to make them walk, but stood in front of them, sang, and the oxen followed. When the Welsh sold their oxen to the English, and the latter complained that the oxen did not walk, the Welsh said: "-That is because you don't sing." Great! I’m from South Wales and honestly it feels like I’ve been brain washed my whole life to think my culture and language are dying/don’t matter. I’ve recently started taking an interest in the history of wales because we aren’t taught anything it’s very heavily English influenced. It’s a shame because it’s so rich in culture and history. We have the independent movement picking up steam which is putting people back in touch with their roots. I have a long line on one side of welsh ancestors, a lot of other ancestors were from the West Country and moved to wales. It’s sad we’re taught not to care, I did welsh in school but I’m going to teach my self my language hopefully!

Go online to ‘dysgu cymraeg and you can start the entry level language course for £45 for the year. The Welsh language seems to be having a resurgence, get stuck in !

I recommend Say Something in Welsh! I have no Welsh ancestry (as far as I know), but I adore the language and I can only imagine how good it’ll feel for you to connect with that part of your heritage. Pob lwc!!

I have a long line too but I am in America....I am also Scottish and other Nationalities but my Welsh ancestry goes back to Cole Hen and beyond. I am reading the Mabinogion. You are blessed to live where your ancestors were.

I'm also from South Wales & I agree with you, I hated welsh in school,it was made to be so boring. No mention of the myths, legends and magic. Nothing about Taliesin or the mabinogi. It's only now led by my own self directed interests that I have opened up a portal to the beauty and magic of Wales! We are often the forgotten celtic nation but I feel it is our time to stand up and allow our proud welsh culture to shine through and weave the rich tapestry of heritage and culture again. Our identity through heritage and culture is vital for our sense of belonging, also it is vital to keep the magic of the past alive so it can feed into the present day and pave the way for the future. My 3 sons are growing up hearing my love for Wales and my interest in the mythology and magic of the land.

Our pride as Welsh is being Welsh. We don’t feel the need to project our culture as our roots are Celtic, in one with nature .

Agreed! I’m an Englishman who moved to wales aged 10 and stayed till I was forty, I now live in Scotland. I play and sing traditional English, Irish and Scottish music on my mandolin but the only welsh music I know are choir tunes like Sospan fach, ar hyd y nos and Calon lan. As I say I’m English but I’m culturally welsh so would love to learn more.

I'm of welsh heritage living in Australia. I don't speak the language, but I try to learn what I can, I sing and belt out vocals to our songs without any comprehension of whether or not I'm remotely close to pronouncing it correctly, and I got married in a great kilt that was designed specifically towards my family colours. Celtic / Welsh blood runs deep within me, and I've never been prouder of anything in my life!

I don't understand any word from any of those original languages of Britain, rather our languages but I've deep respect for those, including culture as well. We're taught, told wrong things about Celtic people, culture but now I know everything about those fake stories. We know us as English but what's English. Clusters of foreigners, mingled with locals. I asked this question to many but didn't get any proper answer. I wonder how foreign (German, Roman, others) people & culture changed everything in our land, mainly language. We speak a foreign language now (English), even we changed the name of our land to a foreign name, England. I saw how secretly our people treated Celtic people (badly) here in England. When I learned, in the past, how our people tortured soft-hearted aboriginal people, psychologically, physically, I feel very sorry for them. I also don't like the secret terms our people use to call Irish & Scottish people! Some of those're very offensive. (Thu 25 Mar 2021 11h53)

@@DifferentSaturner but the celts are far from the 'original' languages of Britain. They too were invaders. Stonehenge was built 1800 years before the celts even stepped foot here. And there were hunter gatherers even before then.

I never knew that the Harp was such a cherished and beloved instrument in Welsh music. As a trad Irish fiddle player form Co' Down in the North of Ireland I was always lead to believe that the Harp was characteristically and culturally Irish since it is a national symbol. After watching this I believe I can learn a lot form the Welsh and I now have a tremendous respect for this music and culture. There is such beauty, harmony, joy, strength and resilience in this music that even rivals my own beloved Irish music and culture. This video has been a real treat to watch. thank you so much for sharing this.

Ireland and Wales actually have a big link in harp music (something which I had to unfortunately leave out of this film because of time) Harpists from Ireland and Wales met in Glendalough in something like the 11th century (or thereabouts) to set down the 24 rules for harp music, and a lot of the terms in the Robert ap Huw Manuscript actually don't make sense in Welsh as they come from Irish words! Ireland and Wales share a lot more culturally and historically than most people know

I might even learn a few welsh fiddle tune for the trip. And thanks again I honestly feel like I have learned a great deal from this video.

@@themanhimself1229 There was indeed, there's a Irish crannog in Llangors and stones with ogham writing have been found in that area. There's also a great story in the Mabinogion about the Irish king meeting the Welsh giant king Bendigeidfran and involves battles, magic cauldrons and all sorts. So yeah we share a lot of early history with Ireland, the cultures (particularly the bardic cultures) were very similar

Icelandic has a similar thing where the word kvæði means poetry and the musical performance of poetry. Really interesting stuff.

In Sardinia, even today folk poets battle each other creating verses on the spot and answering each other lines. Interestingly Sardinians are partly of Celtic descent.

I grew up in the fifties and sixties listening to my father's Merydydd Evans record. I learned so much from him, and ended up including several of those songs in my repertoire. Such beautiful music!

West looking east, I imagine we don’t hear so much about Welsh music here in the US because the Welsh diaspora is not as massive as that of Ireland, Scotland, and England. Thank you for the video. This made my day. My son and I are now listening to Calan (thanks for the recommendation!) and we’re absolutely loving it.

There is actually a fairly large Welsh diaspora in the USA, particularly around Pennsylvania and Ohio. Most of the US' founding fathers were at least partly Welsh. The problem is that at the time of mass migration to the US Wales was considered a part of England, so on official documents Welsh was rarely differentiated from English/ British, so many Americans who have Welsh ancestry who look back at their family records only see England/ Britain written on the documents and so don't know about their Welsh roots.

Carreg Lafar is a Welsh folk group that didn't get mentioned but well worth hearing. They released their debut in 1995 with Ysbryd y Werin on Sain (a label well worth mentioning as they specialize in all sorts of Welsh music from traditional to contemporary). Aside from "Ar Hyd y Nos" ("All Through the Night"), "Llwyn Onn" ("The Ash Grove") and of course "Deck the Halls", I've been in the dark on traditional Welsh music. Carreg Lafar sure helped me know some more songs. Their music included vocals (male, female), fiddle, guitar, percussion and sometimes pibgorn and bagpipes. They remind me of a Welsh version of Steeleye Span.

I didn't want this to end. Brilliantly done. Thank you! Despite immigrating to Canada from Wales more than half a century ago, my grandparents never lost their distinctly Welsh spirit. I hope I can begin learning Welsh within the next few years, but in the meantime I want to soak up the culture by way of music and stories. They also kept other traditions alive in England and Scotland. I’d love to spend some time with them but they seem to view us gadjo’s with the same level of mistrust as most people have of them.

Had a DNA test done awhile back and found out that I was a tad Welsh. (Somewhere along the line, I had an ancestor that lived near Castell Aberlleiniog.) However, my knowledge of Welsh history is very scant. This video was very informative and fantastic to watch!

Same here. My g-grandad came over from Pembrokeshire in 1872 with his mam and siblings. Their dad came over a year early to Boston to earn money for the trip!

Thank you, Rhodri, for creating this introduction to traditional Welsh music, and for posting all the links to resources. My dad was born in Colwyn Bay, and I was born on March 1st. I have often wondered why people may have overlooked Welsh music as opposed to Irish, Scottish or Breton. I honestly didn't think there was much of an instrumental tradition. I always believed, as my dad did, that Welsh music was primarily vocal. Anyway, thanks again and best wishes from Canada!

Canu Pwnc sounds very similar to the Gaelic Psalm singing of the Reformed Presbyterians of Scotland. Celtic folk music has always been this SEAsian’s interest for many years, and I really appreciate this video explaining the other forms of Welsh traditional music outside the context of the church. The Crwth - one was found at Sutton hoo with Spoons and a Sword which had Coelbren Scribed into them. So much for the language being an invention, and Sutton hoo being Saxon. Its Brythonic (Cymro)

Well done! I grew up second gen from Welsh immigrants and we all sang Welsh songs from a songbook from the late 19th century that was copied and handed down to all the kids. The cover was lost so I have no idea who compiled it. The other thing we sang from was the 1948 Anglican Hymnal. I would guess about half the book was written by Welsh composers. All the good ones at least.

I was fascinated to read names in an old Scottish psalter , which were Jewish in origin , as composers of some of Scotland's most well known hymns, Isn't it wonderful , when Hebrew people find THEIR MESSIAH,! Outreach to Jewish folks was zealous two hundred years ago , I'm praying for revival of that zeal again , God Bless the coming musical REFORMATION, , MAY IT BEGIN IN WALES, , AMEN!

Thanks for this. I used to play the uilleann pipes. My son is learning the harp, known here as the Irish harp, but I note that one of the Harper's at the Belfast harp festival was Welsh. Funny Welsh music more like Irish music. There are many Irish tunes that don't fit the modal system also. Particularly our Sean nos songs. Yet the language is very different. I can't understand Welsh, but can understand Scottish, Gaelic.

Cerdd - yes. You get something of the sort in Gàidhlig too in that filidh can be a minstrel, a bard, a bird (a warbler) or anything that sings.

Thank you for that very interesting and well put together introduction to Welsh music and Welsh history and culture. I'm Irish, and while the music and dances are quite similar the two languages, while both Celtic, are very, very different. I must look into the linguistic history a bit more. Great to see people preserving their native cultures and traditions. Just as an aside, I think the music of Galicia is very beautiful. Well, Western classical music has it's origins in ecclesiastical song. The choral music of Wales was developed from the same traditions.

What a revelation and a treat! While there are many similarities between Welsh, Scottish and Irish musical idioms and traditions, there are distinctions that are important (and fun!) to learn about. Hello Rhodri. You spoke my mind. I felt very sorry for Welsh/Cymraeg language, culture. As if, at the end of this video, I was crying. This's what I often discuss with my friends, families. Most of them know almost nothing about our past history. Especially, anything about languages, culture etc. This's one of those great videos (related subjects) I've watched, which I cannot compare with many. Thanks for explaining everything very nicely. It seems, not only that Henry era but also those Methodists, later British Govt decisions, also ruined this language & culture! This happened in Ireland. Religion divided them. I went to many areas in Wales & was very surprised that many people, especially, youngsters don't know how to speak in Welsh/Cymru. During the lockdown period, many people wanted to learn, know Irish, Welsh languages. This's another good thing I noticed after a long time. This's one of many videos, which tells me, I should invent Time Machine & collect all those lovely moments in the past. Keep it up. I've added this video to a playlist: World music songs. (Thu 25 Mar 2021 12h22) I don't understand any word from any of those original languages of Britain, rather our languages but I've deep respect for those, including culture as well. We're taught, told wrong things about Celtic people, culture but now I know everything about those fake stories. We know us as English but what's English. Clusters of foreigners, mingled with locals. I asked this question to many but didn't get any proper answer. I wonder how foreign (German, Roman, others) people & culture changed everything in our land, mainly language. We speak a foreign language now (English), even we changed the name of our land to a foreign name, England. I saw how secretly our people treated Celtic people (badly) here in England. When I learned, in the past, how our people tortured soft-hearted aboriginal people, psychologically, physically, I feel very sorry for them. I also don't like the secret terms our people use to call Irish & Scottish people! Some of those're very offensive.

I live here in North Carolina. My family came down from the Appalachian mountains two generations ago. Tracing the roads of that side of my family, I found that we had roots in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. From that research I fell in love with Wales and the language(thank you Julie Murphy) and I started learning it myself. Funny thing is that when I tell people that I'm learning Welsh, they say, "But I don't understand, you already know English." I then give a deep sigh.

Thanks for sharing... loving the old box fiddles at 15:52 (a YT friend, David Hilowitz just made and sampled one, has a great sound to it) and got to get myself a Crwth. And I've been looking for a set of Welsh pipes for a long time The links a great, I will have to spend a day or two going through them all. Very helpful
