To celebrate in style the tenth edition of the WEMP (our festival located in Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva), we needed an exceptional musician, an artistic personality of world renown. Nikolai Lugansky unquestionably belongs to the caste of the greatest active Masters. And the fact that he made a detour via Pully on his huge Rachmaninov tour was a priceless honor. He has no equal in this repertoire, where his exceptional technique and never-failing elegance work wonders.

An extraordinary recital and perforamnce. Lugansky is one of my favourite pianists - daring but controlled, big dynamic contrasts, superb technique and a direct, honest approach. I know he's amongst the best of the best but I still find it remarkable he can play Rachmaninov solid for 1.5 hours and still look cool as a cucumber at the end.

Yes he really deserved a full bouquet of flowers at the end and a beautiful young woman handing over the flowers. He is the successor to the great Russian pianists Rachmaninov. Other than that it looks like a great concert hall and well organized as can be expected in Switzerland.

Lugansky is a pianistic artist. His play reminds me that of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Bravo!
@paulturner1973
@paulturner1973 8 ай бұрын
I’m not trying to be provocative, but I find ABM overrated. Supposedly he never hits a wrong note (as if that were all that mattered), but of course he does. More importantly, I find him almost always clinical, cold and motoric, though I admit his approach suits things like Beethoven Op 111 and the Grieg concerto. But in Debussy, for example, he is completely outclassed by a pianist like Gilels…

Nikolai Lugansky (51) and Alexander Malofeev (21) both studied also with Sergey Dorensky in Moscow. Their sure but sensitive touch and their total emotional understanding of the compositions have almost the same musical beauty. Their technique is also perfect. What a gift these two give to the musical world. 🌷🌷🎹🎹🙏💙💙 Thank you very much WEMP. (Netherlands)

Lugansky comes closest to achieving the oceanic sound Rachmaninoff reached for in the Maestoso. The infinitely overpouring notes, sweeping and yet distinct ... the wall of sound blasting outward, and yet with a beautiful, clear melody singing above. Absolutely magisterial. What's remarkable about this particular moment musical is that I can't think of a timbre which would successfully capture Rachmaninoff's vision. The piano comes close, but the notes die away too quickly. Strings would be scratchy and besides not rich enough. A full orchestra wouldn't allow the melody to sing. Perhaps a single movement piano concerto-fantasy?

I'm not questioning the fact that you go to concerts. I just think that you're assuming that the audience wasn't respectful when in fact it was an admiring, enthusiastic and polite audience, which the maestro pointed out.
