In response to the events of September 11, 2001, Kentucky author Wendell Berry wrote the essay "Thoughts in the Presence of Fear".
Appalshop filmmaker Herb E. Smith matched his words with scenes of Kentucky and interviewed Wendell years later about the process of writing in response to crisis and the essay's continued relevancy.
This is the first time Appalshop has made this work publicly accessible. KET shares this piece each year to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001.

Here I sit, Jan 2022, feeling the heart break with the continuous failure of leadership throughout our country on many fronts. How ironic that this piece speaks of 911 and Pearl Harbor as one tribe in Washington looks to tie such historic attacks from abroad to instigated actions of citizens. But what is truly heart breaking is to see that our collective actions as stewards of this earth is more intense energy, promoted by some green deal to hyper expand new forms of energy production that come with new forms of earth destruction from mining to manufacturing.

"We should re-consider our actions and protect the earth and its citizen responsibly ...and morally. Begin by teaching your children well. We cannot spend and consume endlessly ...not an economy based on waste. We need both a peaceable economy and better relations with our global niwhgbours. " ( a partial paraphrasing of this essay ).

34:18 "We do need a new economy but one that is founded on thrift and care on saving and conserving, not on excess and waste" Mr. Berry is bemoaning the basic human condition, basic human nature to be selfish and to ignore the big picture. How will that ever change unless God directly intervenes?

Put your considerable prestige Mr. Berry behind nuclear power and the it would be the beginning of the end of global warming destruction. It would not be the end of species down out but you can't have everything.. But I guess that is not as romantic and poetic as you are. would save thousands of lives and it would allow civilization to survive well into the coming centuries, albeit, poorer so. It is now human consciousness that is needed it is scientific and engineering know how. You will be soon forgotten Mr. Berry. Good riddens.

and what to do with the nuclear waste, Good sir? Renewable, clean energy is the needed scientific reform and engineering infrastructure we lack. Recipient of the 2016 Presidential national humanities medal -he will not soon be forgotten. For those who actively listen-Wendell will live on indefinitely.

there are already dozens of solutions less dangerous than nuclear, and if we put even a fraction of the budget we put into military towards problem solving we could probably have 100s more peaceful solutions. Unfortunately until logic supercedes profit-logic, the exhaustion of resources will only continue.

We still revere Wendell Berry's poetry, and still read hIs books in our community. For sure no-one remembers a certain Garry Tanner who can't even spell his name correctly, and whose comments are polluted with a negative and self destructive mind... Shame on you
