Thank you for the clear explanation. Can you suggest some strategy to initialize the 'a' and 'b' values?

I'm studying numerical methods right now, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but if you can graph the function, that is the easiest way to pick starting bounds. Another thing you can do is write code to scan a region of interest looking for sign changes. Sometime you may need experience with a system so that you can make an educated guess.
