There's a clear line in the sand marking the different eras of Ratchet & Clank: There's the PS2 Saga, the PS3's Future Saga, and then after 2010 things get...weird. The "bad batch" era of Ratchet & Clank only makes up two of the worst-received games in the R&C series, All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault, but these two games are sometimes considered the first steps in the downfall of the franchise. Looking back a decade later with more insight into their development, was the Spinoff Era as bad as many fans say, or are they hated more for being different than truly "bad?" These are the Blunder Years of Ratchet & Clank...or are they?

man i would love that comic plot as a game where it's remasters and reworks of planets from all the past games. hey the physical copy argument is just "yo burn a disc, it's easy as fuck, and i actually want 2 own my dam games after the servers shut down or i stop paying the sub after i payed 4 the game." props 2 them 4 making a physical copy there and i hope devs don't just toss this aside. digital games only is very anti consumer because u have 2 either use external hard drives or cloud which u pay 4 and those servers die so even if u payed full price it's a glorified rental.

One thing that I will definitely give All 4 One credit for is how I really like all the fun and unique designs for all the enemies and creatures you fight in the game, you really have to give it to Insomniac, they know how to make some really great character designs.

I think it says a lot about Insomniac as a developer that even the "shitty games" in the R&C series still maintain a level of quality and are fun to play. It's a shame most fans never give these games a shred of credit for what they do right, all because of the stigma attached that "These aren't mainline entries, so they're trash." A4O and FFA may have been misteps, but those were still *steps* all the same. Steps towards a better workplace culture at Insomniac and reworking the Ratchet formula to save or at least briefly halt the stagnation of the series. 'Adapt or Die'. Another great video!

After years of sticking to the same formula for Ratchet, I completely understand and appreciate that insomniac would experiment a bit with franchise, which i honestly wouldn’t mind seeing them attempt again, especially with how big multiplayer centric games have gotten throughout the years.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if one of Sony's 10 planned live service games in the next five years is a R&C one; just looking at how heavily they're pushing the PS brand into TV/film/etc., I'd be surprised if there's not another attempt at a proper R&C cartoon, and a free multiplayer game would be just the way to capitalize on those kids that become fans through the show. Don't tell too many of us old-timers, though, I've seen enough 25-30 year olds crying about these games not catering to them already.

@@TheGoldenBolt The whole reason I got back into this series (partly because of TheGamingBritShow video) was because I was burned out on PvP MOBA, FTP etc. It was just so refreshing playing a good solid platformer which doesn't nickle and dime you or ask for an inane amount of time playing the game to remain competitive or even just have fun. Especially with the replayability. A FTP R&C game could be cool but it would be a tragedy if it fell to the same extractive corporate commercialisation (some commercialisation is necessary of course) it satired in the beginning.

Looking back at these games; it definitely felt like the wisest choice to make to strike out into something completely out of the norm for the series in terms of Gameplay, especially after all that crunch and overambition that had led to A Crack In Time's success for many fans and critics. Back in the day, it was thrilling to actually play another multiplayer game in the form of All 4 One and one where the main campaign could be played locally or online mode and the same can be said of Q-Force and it's tower defence online mode. I was all in for these ideas back then, especially as a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series with new content in the forms of maps, skins, modes and such. My biggest issues with both of these titles however stem primarily from the fact that these games were more so made with multiplayer in mind, meaning that playing these games solo leads to a pretty lacklustre experience which is definitely not a problem if you do have friends to play these games with, but when looking at the other two games with fleshed out multiplayer modes in them, those being the 3rd game and Gladiators; those still ended up being fully enjoyable in the single player experiences which for me personally ranks those games higher up than these ones. Would I consider these some of the worst Ratchet games Insomniac have ever worked on? Personally I'd say yes just because of the issues brought up. Are these games bad though because of the fact that they didn't focus on the narrative of the future series, didn't flesh out the single player experience as much as the multiplayer experience and had a different visual style altogether? Not really, no? Even though I would consider these their worst work with the series, I hold the opinion that Insomniac Games have never made what some might consider "truly bad" Ratchet games, at worst, I'd probably consider these mediocre experiences but even mediocrity can still hold some enjoyment and entertainment value. But bad Ratchet games? I'd say no to that. They wanted to get experimental and explore new ground with the series and with what ideas they came up with here, I'd say it was worth it. Besides, I wouldn't even go as far as to say they're even the worst games of the series if we counted them all in, and I'm not just talking about mobile games either.

I loved Clank as a character because I love robots so I always picked him, and when I played the Clank demo for a crack in time, I was really disappointed by his lesser abilities and never moved past All 4 One. Oh yeah, and I just remembered the day I bought the game! I went into GameStop and picked it out, and the guy at the cash register said “just so you know, this one plays really differently to the other Ratchet and Clank games” and me having never played another Ratchet and Clank game just said “yeah that’s fine” lol

With regards to All 4 One, I've always gotten a pseudo-Oddworld vibe from the environmental design and the more ambient soundtrack. Though I suppose hiring then-Oddworld composer Michael Bross would contribute to that. I've seen plenty of vitriol directed specifically toward these games for "setting the tone" for the narrative direction of the franchise going forward. Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I still enjoyed the in-game dialogue in the games that followed this; yes, even the 2016 game. It's like you said with regards to the overall quality of the games; I think some fans vastly oversell the quality of Ratchet narratives. I do feel a bit bad for Michael Bross, though. In interviews with outlets and fan sites like Ratchet Galaxy, you could tell he really had a lot of fun working on the Ratchet series, but nary a month goes by without some part of the fandom trashing his work from All 4 One to the 2016 game.

I actually love Michael Bross stuff and even then I also love the Oddworld games for how they give an excellent atmosphere of dark aura like presence that was excellent in Oddworld Strangers Wrath (one of my favorite soundtracks due to its dark western tone of it) All 4 One to me is an underrated classic that had a track that made me remind myself of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Fantasia of the 1940s. Its really awesome. I enjoyed Michael Bross and the fans of Ratchet and Clank should give it a second thought. :)

I like Q-Force, but I remember there was an issue with difficulty. Particular with the snowstorm temple level. People said it was too difficult in single-player, so the Insomniacs toned it down, whilst also allowing your weapons to level up to level 5 ( it only went to 3 before) and giving you the ability to teleport to your base at any time, making the in-level teleporters irrelevant. The snowstorm level (in particular the base assaults) is now easier than the previous plasma harvester one (co-op's a different story) and that feels off to me.

I was one of those people who played All 4 One with just my brother on local co-op, and I remember we liked the game enough to want to give it another playthrough with Nefarious and Quark (which we unfortunately never had the time for). Co-op is kinda our thing, so understandably we might have had a better time with it than people who were looking for a 'Ratchet & Clank game with co-op' rather than a co-op game. As for Full Frontal Assault, that was a game I started up with my brother, realized it was co-op, realized it was MOBA-like, and wanted to play through to the end right there and then (I was hugely into Dota 2 at the time). Unfortunately, like in my previous paragraph, we never had the time to get back to it and our PS3 doesn't even work anymore so we couldn't if we wanted to. If I had the chance, this would absolutely be a game I'd want to play more of.

I actually really enjoyed the all-4-one game, it was an interesting spin on the series, being a multiplayer co-op game rather than a single player game with multiplayer pushed into it. The game also had a bit of replayability by having a different weapon for all characters, abliet, only one for each. They also had unique dialouge for all the events that occured, giving everyone somehing to say for what’s happening, and they had an interesting focusto only stay on one planet, allowing you to see the many sides of the planet than the series’ usual take to just have one city or valley per planet and then just forget it later. That’s actually something i’ve had a problem with most of the series with, that you have these planets that ratchet needs to get to, but only lands in a single area and then heads off to the next when his objective is complete. And while i’m not asking for no man’s sky ranges of exploritory depth, i just wish that they made more use out of these planets than just presumably having it’s entire population reside in one city. Even rift apart had that problem, too. Sure, it brought back some areas from past games, but while it was interesting to see the pirates cove from ToD again, i wish that planets like had more than one place to go to. A4O actually scratches that itch, if only a little. You got to explore the many different locales of the planet, even riding a ship to it’s moon, and while it’s the only planet that you’re on for the entirety of the game, after the opening level mind you, it was at least something to let you get the feel for the planet’s lore and what is occuring on it. The gameplay was fun, the story was interesting and the mysteries it held were actually pretty good. Is it my favorite ratchet and clank game? No, not really, i still love the first three, with crack in time right behind that, but this is still on the list. Is it my favorite spinoff game? No, i’d actually chalk that up to deadlocked that this. Which is also on the list btw. But, is it my favorite multiplayer RaC game? Well, yeah. Were you expecting me to say no to that, as well? Bottom line, this game is good and i’d play it again, if i could. I suppose i have to talk about FFA/Qforce now aren’t I? Ok, so, all i’m gonna say is that i don’t actually like this game. I know, shocker? But just not the whole thing, just the story. I actually thought it’s gameplay premise was pretty cool and only wish they polished up a few things. The story is my drawing line for why i never want to touch this game ever again. I do love that the game tries to showcase and reference as much in the series as possible, it was the aniversary game, after all. But what i didn’t love what the matter of the main antagonist being some overzealous fan that didn’t like where quark was going in life and decided that he’d show the world just how bad quark is at being a hero. And can i just say that doesn’t this plot feel almost like that song from eminem where he uses the letters from his then deceased stan fan to show how dangerous obsessing over your idol can get. And i know that some there are some really big differences in the two to have people even question my own sanity, but there were the similarities of the fan not getting what he wanted out of his idol that he lost it and went berzerk, that during my time watching this part in the video, i just couldn’t stop thinking on that. And that song is just good in a somber, kinda sad way. But anyways, the story was just a bit too much for me, where i just stopped playing altogether and simply looked up a playthrough to see how it ends. And yeah, that ending didn’t really feel that rewarding either, and i was just watching someone else play. The literal premise being that a fan turned villain to get back at their hero for being a fraud, and now you have to go to the planets to unbreak everything he did to them. Not to mention that our villain constantly keeps using L33T speak, which everyone knows isn’t fun at all outside of a computer, and well as messing with you with outdated memes, which is actually why i stopped playing as reaching a certain point in the game, your ship gets ransacked by the nerd and now plays a neverending loop of the troll song, which never ends, even after returning from a mission. That whole thing was just too much to bear and even though the notorious B.O.L.T. says otherwise, i really just can’t hold a candle to this game like he does, though i won’t try to argue on their preference on the matter and be civil about it. Different strokes for different bolts, you heard it before. So what’s my verdict? Well, to borrow goldie’s way of doing it, i give all-4-one a dented gold bolt. It’s not perfect, but hey, what is. As for FFA, i’m gonna give it the trashy bronze. This game could have the best gameplay and everything, but that storyline will always keep me from coming back. At the very least, they could’ve dialed back the computer lingo and definitely shuold have removed the troll song from the game. God, whoever thought that was funny should get a slap on the wrist of that, and if they still planned on doing that, the least they could’ve done was have it stop after returning from the next mission. That was just really souring the experience.

As a creator, there is nothing worse than feeling creatively stagnant. It can really kill your enthusiasm. That is why I hate fanboys that can't allow creators create with a passion. I also hate the fanboy mentality that they were the ones that made the franchise successful. No, the creators made the franchise successful. You just gave them money.

I've never had a problem with All For One, when it first came out, me and a buddy played it and got to the final level and quit. Then 5 years later me and another bro sat down and played it in the house. I'd go so far as to say I have some of the fondest memories of the entire series in A4O. And the music, even being different, kinda rocks. I love the ambient tones it sets. For me, it didn't use too many heroic sounds, but went another direction. Which is why i think I remember it so well. Plus the theme song is soooo good

I always thought of these games as Insomniac experimenting and having fun doing something else that just wasn't for me. But the lack of an answer to the questions the series had made me ask for the entirety of the PS3 era (where are the Lombax?) definitely annoyed me at the time. And when all my childhood game series were done or no longer what got me into them, Ratchet was the last thing I was still desperate not to "grow out of", and yet I sorta did for a sad reason: I didn't have friends to play with, and these were much less interesting on your own.

Still, it makes me grateful that you work on these videos so we can all get a better perspective on what goes on behind the curtain of our favorite games... All 4 one was my first ratchet and clank game. I still remember trading in a bunch of games and my local game store and getting it really cheap. It even had the holographic front cover so I think that's what really drew my attention. I thought the game was tons of fun and while I did go back to play all the other ratchet and clank games only to realize that they were all better for the most part, I still hold a soft spot for it as it introduced me to the series. Good video al always- I like how you always refer to what happens behind the scenes AND how all of the behind the scenes things from previous years/games also contribute to what happens with each entry to the series. Yeah these games seem alright. I think they just released at a difficult time. Where most R&C titles are single player there probably wasn't a large audience of people looking for a co-op/ multiplayer games like this, which is a shame because the multiplayer gameplay looks decent. All For One looks like it would be a great game to release today on the Switch, and if Full Frontal Assault had more of a player base and depth I can see potential for a good competitive game there.

We getting close to the end of this retrospective that’s amazing that your videos amusing me so much in the last year can’t wait for the nexus video. Didn’t reed the comics because I don’t like comics but I’m happy that tj fixman managed to do what he wanted to do with the stories. About the spin-off era (i think it’s called “the ps3 era” in the 15th anniversary book while ToD-ACiT are called “the future era”) I can’t say a lot because they are the least games in the franchise I’ve played i only played the demos of all 4 one back in 2011 and didn’t like it and I remember I waited for the trailer of q-force in gamescom 2012 and i was so disappointed when i see the ugly A4O ratchet & clank models didn’t even touch it until last year. Because rift apart i play the games finally last years and to be honest i think my opinions on A4O change since 2011 and i think this game is alright and fun for local couch multiplayer with friends. About q-force this is the only game in the franchise I’ve never finished because when I started playing it rift apart was 3 days away from releasing and i only managed to play it for 1 and a half hour on my ps3 and after that i drive 45 minutes to a friend store outside of my city to get rift apart early. I maybe have no right to judge q-force but I didn’t like the single player gameplay in my opinion it’s the worst insomniac ratchet game in the franchise. I didn’t tried the multiplayer because my ps3 is modded and I can’t go online (i own the physical copy but i copy the iso from the disc to the hdd) but I heard that the online is really good and it’s so disappointing that’s I can’t try. I got q-force on my ps vita as well got it from the Playstation store because there are no physical copies on vita as much that this game running bad on vita the positive is this game make ratchet the ultimate Playstation franchise along with wipeout because as much as bad the ps vita q-force port is at least it’s a brand new (at the time) ratchet game that’s release on the vita and since the ps2 days we got a brand new ratchet game on every Playstation console and handheld (not even gran turismo got a game on ps vita).

I wasn't expecting All 4 One to be as good as it was. I honestly thought it would be like Crash Twinsanity; a game where the concept looked good, but it's execution was bad. I thought it had a fun story; a group of characters who don't all get along having to work together to survive a dangerous adventure. The co op gameplay was done well, mostly, and there were plenty of funny interactions between the characters. This game is definitely in my top 5 Ratchet and Clank games.

To me, Ratchet and Clank's most enjoyable days, were those of Deadlocked and All 4 One. I didn't grow similarly to the franchise that many did, but I can safely say, it's been quite refreshing and intriguing to see how most of these titles aged with time as emulation does help there a good deal (A Crack in Time's not running on my end yet though, oh well). Still, I can see why they got some shoddy reputation (Online Pass, simplistic story, troubled development and the such). Still, I did grow with the series over time and want to explore them further. The combat and setpieces are engaging, but what I think was missing till pre-Rift Apart, was purposeful implementation. Now, I know Tools of Destruction was received well and tried new things, but over time, the cracks (pun intended), began to show both on the devs and their products. In regards to this video though, I can say this. All 4 One was dumb in a lot of parts, but equally engaging and a surprizingly good Co-Op experience, botched by it's faults, release philosophy with the online pass garbage and a lack of meaningful context to dissect in regards to the story scope of the franchise. Still, it's combat, teamwork feel, character interactions (sometimes) and setpieces of just one planet most of the runtime, made it a wonderful experience to me, in contrast to Deadlocked's lack of interesting planets mostly. However, from a replay stance, Deadlocked still is my gold standard as you entailed in its video, in regards to it's difficulty and ways to hook you further if you want to. I think Insomniac did their best at the time for their devs, which is neat no doubt. Still, it didn't have to be so lacking and chaotic with Ratchet and Clank (2016), that game's best things were easily the Pixelizer and Groovitron, if not for me being a sucker for gun porn and variety in my arsenal. Regardless, good job with the video. You've earned my subscription today :).

Funny enough, All 4 One is the ONE R+C game I have experience with during the time the series was on the PS3. Played it for about a couple hours at a friend's house back in middle school and had an ok time with it. Was it what long time fans wanted? No. Is it fine in its own right and should be commended (at least somewhat) for trying something new. Yes. I am likely never going to go back to it, not only because I do not own a PS3, but I also do not see much fun in doing so with my one friend who is still somewhat into the series. Seeing the game, at the very least, is somewhat nostalgic for me just due to when I played it. I thank you Mr. Golden Bolt for covering the franchise and this game as, for many of these titles, I likely would have never thought about them again had it not been for your videos. I love your Ratchet videos but really wanted to comment specifically on this one, as I genuinely tried to play All 4 One (remember beating it on PS3 back in the day) and FFA but always viewed them as the series worst installments. The really bad frame rates for both games, combined with them being such a departure from what came before, really soured me on them both but watching your video and realizing these were games that a new team made to experiment for new ideas? I feel a bit less hostile toward them now. And shout out to you mentioning the fantastic comic series, remember taking out the entire thing at my local library a few years back and loved it. It was so cool seeing the PS2 era cast interact with the PS3 era cast. Full Frontal Assault / Q-Force I adored for the Tower Defense hybrid & the online multiplayer aspect of it. I remember getting to max rank, meeting friends that I’m still in touch with today because of it, not to mention the free updates with additional maps, & a new mode. The very first time I played FFA/Q-force, I was sort of lukewarm to it, cut to 5 or so years later when I decided to go through all the R&C games 100% again, and I absolutely fell in love with the game, the movement was brisk and responsive, the combat was fun, and augmenting your gunplay by utilising the turrets and defenses was so satisfying for me. I so desperately wish there was more to the single player then just 5 levels; Like maybe more levels, different difficulty options, a challenge mode, or even the ability to have bot opponents in multiplayer (I dont like playing competitive games normally, as I find them stressful) It's a game that left me with an itch that is impossible to scratch, and that makes me sad.
