This was a great tribute to Wes Craven as a horror director and a very humane man. This was wild. The John Carpenter video was you're best work. Now this is your best work! Fun fact: I drew the skull design from Invitation to Hell on the back of my notebook back in elementary school because I loved it so much. Still haven't seen the movie. Didn't know it was a Wes Craven movie until now! Lastly, I loved the finale to Summer of Fear. I didn't love the movie, but I had a solid time watching it. I have a lot of affection for it actually. Way better than Chiller! All around great work Kylie!

never ending debate among horror fans - who's better Craven or Carpenter :D I love Craven for Scream - my presonal favourite, and for the big amount of humanism and psychological/philosophical depth he always bring to his movies (even the weaker ones). Also he indeed made at lest 3 game changers, that's impressive. Most directors are not able to make one in their life time. But I also adore Carpenter so much! His movies are more constant in quality, he's better in craft I think, his scores are beyond amazing, and he is simply f*cking cool dude. I love them both for different reasons, and both of the them are true masters!

“Dad, girls don't fall down every time they run.” - his quote He is truly one of the greatest and it’s funny how his influences were people like Bergman, Hitchcock, Bunuel, Fellini, Cocteau and Truffaut who are very far from him visually, but contain same psychological/philosophical depth.. thank you for this video 🖤

Okay, any Channel who dedicated a whole video to Wes craven gets my attention! He is one of my favorite all time directors! My grandmother and I watched Wes cravens new nightmare so many times, I haven’t watched after she passed it. It is one of all time favorite horror movies! Good I wish Wes craven was still around making movies. I get emotional thinking about him. I miss him.

Just recently found your channel. I loved this deep dive on Wes Craven. I've been a lifelong fan since the release of the first Scream and have read everything and watched everything there is on him. I was surprised you originally skipped Night Visions since you were including his TV films, but found it funny when you did end up bringing it up later during your rankings. Also, as an "older horror fan," I absolutely love Scream 4. First time I watched it, I got it. I thought it was scary because it could happen. Looking forward to checking out more of your content.

When I was in middle school I had a teacher who was obsessed with Lois Duncan books. So we had to read basically her whole bibliography. And subsequently I became obsessed with her too. Perfect intro into YA horror suspense. At the time. Apparently Hollywood was obsessed with her too. By the time I graduated high school there were quite a few adaptations of her work ("I know what you did last summer" arguably the most famous) so when I found out about Summer of Fear I HAD to see it. Long story long that movie with all its faults will always have a pretty big room of its own in my heart. I'd completely forgotten it was a Wes Craven movie tho! I think, no I KNOW its time to revisit this one. Thanks for the reminder. Middle school here I come!!

Thank you for this amazing video. I often don't agree with your opinons on horror movies, like with The Exorcist for example, which is one of my favorites of all time, but it's always a pleasure to hear your well-reasoned perspectives. My top ten Wes Craven films in descending order from most favorite to least: 01. A Nightmare on Elm Street 02. Scream 03. Wes Craven's New Nightmare 04. The Hills Have Eyes 05. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors 06. The Hills Have Eyes 2 07. The Last House on the Left 08. The People Under the Stairs 09. Cursed 10. Red Eye A Nightmare on Elm Street needs no explanation as it remains one of the most creative horror movies ever made. Scream likewise is just iconic although I didn't care for any of the sequels which never quite equaled the brilliance of the first for some reason and the formula quickly got old. New Nightmare was sheer genius and did what Scream did only earlier and with a supernatural element which I always prefer in my horror movies. The Hills Have Eyes is another brilliant film that reinvents or invigorates the genre. I appreciate the original more than the sequel just because it was the first and like most sequels the second is simply not as good although stilll a very fun movie. A Nighmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warrios is a brilliant revival of the franchise and having Heather Langenkamp back alone is reason to celebrate it. The Hills Have Eyes 2 is a great sequel but I'm always going to prefer the original for how groundbreaking it was. The Last House on the Left is indeed very disturbing but that's what horror movies are supposed to be. I've never even been able to watch the first half of the movie again after the first time but that's no reason to disregard it or other impactful horror films like Martyrs or Terrorizer, which I've also never been able to rewatch. I don't think trying to stigmatize people as sexist or worse for appreciating this type of film is warranted or something that Wes Craven would have endorsed altlhough the over-exploitation of violence against women is clearly an issue for the genre. The People Under the Stairs is another example of how he takes a subgenre of horror, in this case the haunted house genre, and turns it on its head. He had such an enviable ability to reshape things completely. Cursed is, as you said, just pure campy fun and Christina Ricci is always a joy to watch. Red Eye is more of a thriller than a true horror story but it's so damn good that I have to add it to the list. Fantastic acting from the entire cast.

I have loved Wes Craven and horror movies (because of him) since I was 6 years old. My dad let me see Nightmare on Elm Street when I was way too young to see it. It got me into horror movies, even older ones, cheesy ones I love all of it until practical effects get moved away from. I fell in love with creature effects, special effects and the like because of Wes Craven and the waterbed scene. I wanted to be a creature effects artist growing up because Wes introduced me to the horror genre at a young age. I have watched your Scream deep dives and I wish you could have been there. The level of anticipation and excitement over Scream was insane. Everybody I knew was so excited to see the horror franchise get taken down by Wes. I was excited for practical effects but I’m the weird girl figuring out how to mix prosthetic blood in my room sooo… *shrug* No other movie, even the Scream sequels hit the same way and I don’t think anything ever will. It’s nice to know that Wes was kind. He always was to his characters, and I think it’s one of the things that comes through his films. I think him not having an upbringing where movies and TV were allowed let him see what was scary through fresh eyes. Dreams are scary, parents are scary, your peers are scary, cultures we don’t understand are scary, religion is scary. He never made a monster that didn’t stand in for some small child’s biggest fear. That is what made him great, he tapped into that part of your child brain that is scared of everything and he found a way to personify and defeat those fears in his movies. I wouldn’t be who I am today without Wes. I wouldn’t have the empathy and compassion for myself and others without him telling me it’s okay to be afraid and that what I fear is insurmountable.

Wes Craven is definitely my favorite horror director of all time, and I became so hooked for his movies because of my mother and her sisters' greater wave of appreciation of "Scream" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Without any doubts, "Scream" is my favorite slasher franchise of all time. Period. And when I found out that Craven passed away back in 2015, I was deeply sad. He was one of the best directors who reinvented horror cinema. Twice, in fact. His movies are scary and entertaining that keep horror fans hooked from beginning to end.💯👏🏻

Last house on the left actually shows you things that can happen, I saw this when I was 9 or 10 and it always made me wary of things and stuck in my head. Of course this one wasn't a film my parents let me watch my brother had a copy of it on vhs as it was banned in England 😊🐾💜 It's also not a film I like I just get the perception especially being a single woman in her 40's. This is fantastic, so glad my obsession with Halloween Ends led me to your videos. 🙂 Huge Craven fan, I don't know that there's any filmmaker I enjoy hearing talk about their movies more. I have to put Elm Street first, perhaps my favorite horror movie of all time. As a teen during the slasher's golden age, it's hard to describe the impact it had upon its release. The concept was so clever and exciting to watch unfold. Top 5: Elm Street Scream Scream 2 New Nightmare Scream 3

My mom and I both met Wes and my mom she's not really a big fan of horror but she completely freaked out when we met him at a horror convention in L.A. and he was like the sweetest man ever. And this was back in 2008 when we met him and he was the coolest. Like the most down to earth kind of guy. And when we found out that he passed away back in 2015 we both cried. There will never be another Wes Craven. He may be gone but due to his legacy and work he will never be forgotten. And he's never going to be forgotten because people are still watching his movies as they should be. This mans work will never die he is a legend

I haven't seen all of Wes Craven's films so I can only speak on what I have seen. Top 5 1. Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Scream 3. New Nightmare 4. Shocker 5. People Under The Stairs The rest that I have seen just range from decent to bad. Scream 2 - not a great sequel but decent, it tied up some loose ends from the first and the killer reveal was done well. Scream 3 - Not a huge fan but it has some redeeming qualities, I liked that Dewy and Gale got more screen time and that they get engaged at the end, I also thought Roman was a pretty decent killer and Parker Posey's character was alright. Scream 4 - I hadn't seen until recently, and surprisingly I liked it better than I was expecting, the opening was really clever and you are definitely right about it being ahead of it's time which makes me feel old because I remember the stuff you mentioned and I was in my 20s then and I'm 34 now, I still don't love it though my criticism would be it felt like Gale was sidelined for most of the movie and Jill's plan felt very similar to Roman's plan in Scream 3, other than that not bad. Last House on the left - I never liked and can't find any redeeming qualities, so I just say it was bad. The Hills have Eyes - I'm honestly not a big fan of this one, it's just a bit dull and I think the remake is actually better. The Hills Have Eyes 2 - I honestly don't hate this one it's not good, but it has one of those so bad it's entertaining qualities to it, still not something I care to rewatch much but if someone suggested it I wouldn't be opposed. That's all I can comment on at the moment, it's sad there can never be anymore Wes Craven movies, but he left a legacy and I will have to check out some of his other works when I get the chance. Great video as always.

At least she's articulate. An in-depth look into Wes Craven isn't easily done without a great deal of enthusiasm and gathering. The only movie of his I watch once every three years, if the DVD is lucky, is (1972) Last House on the Left. It's a bit too much for me. The featurettes are more fascinating to me as opposed to the movie. This is coming from a Slayer and Texas Chainsaw fan. Happy frights, horror fans.

It should also be noted that Last House was based on 1960's "The Virgin Spring." An old Norwegian folk tale brought to the screen by Ingmar Bergman. Just as tragic, but perfect as a springboard for a horror story. And still just as difficult to watch as Last House.

27:23 such a moving stuff, you got to love this guy! If you haven't see int while doing the research please check out his interview done by Mick Gariss , especially end of part 4, when Craven talks being typecast yet proud of being a horror director. So beautiful, humble and wise. I often felt very sorry for him, as he for sure felt frustrated as f*ck not being able to direct non horror movies. And once he reached mainstream successfully with 3 Screams, he proved he can make a proper drama (Music Of The Heart, or segment in Paris, je t'aime), or thriller (Red Eye) studio f*cked him so much with Cursed he lost credibility in eye's of potential investors/producers again.... But he's a legend and game chamger, his legacy is immense, and he for sure paved the way (alongside with Carpenter, Hooper and Romero) for modern genre directors like Peele, Ti West or Eggers, so they can live in Rotten Tomatoe's certified fresh splendor :D

Just want to say serpant in the rainbow is based on a real story and it's not culturally insensitive. I was in the army and deployed to Haiti. It's very accurate

The zombies depicted in Serpent and the Rainbow, they’d known about them for a very long time, and how they’re controlled. As they’re perfectly shown in the classic Bela Lugosi film White Zombie and one of my favourite Val Lewton films, I Walked with a Zombie. As for the Scream films, I like 1,2 & 4. The opening scene in Scream, I think was a homage to the first segment, in the Mario Bava film, Black Sabbath. NOES, 5&6 are the weakest. 6 is just terrible. All the other ones I like. But one thing I really liked, was when Craven and Raimi trolled one another. Raimi put a ripped Hills have Eyes poster on the basement wall in Evil Dead. Craven hits back in NOES, by having Nancy falling asleep watching Evil Dead. Raimi then puts a Freddy glove out in the shed in Evil Dead 2. Then finally in Scream at the gathering, the group are choosing what to watch next, either Evil Dead or Hellraiser.

Speaking of My Soult To Take. At that point in time critics still found horror a low brow genre in general, especially after the wave of so so remakes and Saws, while Craven's fan were expectign another game changer. Sure, the movie is very messy theme and idea wise, Craven overdid it, buit it's really not that bad. Actually it is full of typical Craven's goodness, I enejoy it for what it is. If it was released now it would be praised for it's retro 80s vs 90s Elm Street/Shocker/Scream/Mean Girls vibe ;) On the other hand it lacks a charismatic killer big time. You can forgive slasher movie being a messy movie, but it's hard to forgive a dull killer + CGI blood :D

While I do feel uncomfortable watching Last House on the Left, the movie doesn't portray any of that stuff in a positive way. The movie shows those things as disgusting and wrong, so I'm okay with this movie existing.

Hollywood films were considered the work of the devil... But like... Disney plays a big part in Hollywood so... That doesn't really work Mrs Craven lol.

Scream 4 better than Elm Street? LoL It’s definitely the worst in the Scream franchise. But also there’s no bad Scream film.
