This video will cover the continuation in the life of the stahlhelm after WWII. This helmet being made in west Germany after the war for border troops, police and security forces, customs, and many others to keep the m1 style helmet worn by the military away from the border to keep an incident of confusion of amassing troops for invasion. It has a slightly different liner and small features are different but the overall design is very close in resemblance to a war time produced m40. Hopefully you guys liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, additional information, or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.
Thank you,
Devin K.

West Germany continue to use the stahlhem, but police unit use it more than the German army did. The helmet was discontinued around the 60 or 70.

Martin Almanza german borderguards used in well into the mid to late 80s, and german military advisors and other military personell into the early 2000s. also it was the helmet for almost all german firefighters and is still used today in that roll

I got a really nice M53 with a camo covering, sadly someone decided to spray paint the helmet black in its whole, but is still really nice.

fishyc150 a lot of people thought that as well and I agree why not just keep using it but most of the German military transitioned to m1’s right away and American style equipment. The only people who still got stahlhelms were police and border guards and that was just to keep it from looking like a bunch of Americans and nato soldiers were massing on the border with east Germany

Thanks, I didn't know such a helmet existed. I believed that helmets with such grommets were Chinese copies.

That is not a West-German M53 (not M52, btw) helmet. It's a Finnish M40/55, with some odd West-German liner. The vent hole tells it all, and also, it has those really crappy Finnish liner rivets made partially from cork. And the iron crosses must be some biker's work. None of the West-German decals were like that! There's a picture showing all the M53 insignia, which I can link if you're interested 😊
@DevinK
@DevinK 6 жыл бұрын
Alpha Chinoz I’ve seen examples with vent holes and I don’t doubt the liner was fake and the decal but it’s also not finish because they used direct riveted liners not split pins and the chinstrap was a separate piece on the Finnish helmets that required extra rivets on the outside of the helmet

@@DevinK The vent on the M52 is much larger diameter, with a flat spot on the inner part, where the whole is punched. I have three of them and many wartime M40 shells and helmets, along with M35s and M42s. The wartime vents are much different.

@@DevinK The M52 shells are all size 66. I have a mixture of 64 and 66 wartime M40s, M42s and M35s. Most of the wartime shells are size 64 shells. I even have a M52 &1/2, where they still had the holes for 3 spilt pins to hold in a liner but NO vents. It was the last step before the development of the M53s and their "inside the shell" mounting system for liners. I don't see many of those.

if this was a police helmet, there should be a decal of the state police on the left side. is it overpainted or removed? are you sure its an BGS helmet?
@DevinK
@DevinK 4 жыл бұрын
Yes m52 stahlhelms were not just police helmets they were also fire helmets and border guard helmets and for many other jobs that the American m1 style helmet was not considered best for either for supply standards or for proximity to East German troops to not be miss identified

The M52 looks suspiciously a lot like the M35... 😕 Edit: I posted this before paying attention to the ventilation holes. But even excluding that detail, the M52 still looks VERY similar to the M35. From a glance anyway.

Zombii 07 the only difference between and m35 and m40 are the air vents on an m35 they are a separate piece placed through the shell and on the m40 they are part of the shell

@@DevinK I've always known the vents were seperate pieces in an M35, und that M40's had integrated vents. But My point was that M50's und M35's looked very similar. I looked closer, und saw the vents in the video, then I realized "Oh, M50's are just M35's with integrated vents, rather than attached vents."
