I believe it is moving that fast. Though I cant gauge the actual speed by listening, but after watching another excellent train doc just yesterday, the modern rail system is phenomenally efficient and very likely get up high speeds on straight stretches where and when they could. Even their fuel usage is tremendous in a good way.

@@Bickhawk there's a lot of train speed limits posted on Wiki, all the way up tp 220 mph in California, the eastern Corridor is 125 mph

I also thought it looked slower than 100 mph. But per Google Maps, from Webster Street to the edge of the Main Street Bridge is around 750 feet. The front of the engine covers that distance in about 4.5 seconds. That’s roughly 167 feet per second, or almost 114 mph. (Unless I’m mistaken on any of these measurements or calculations.)

One car length/second = ~60 mph (88 ft/sec). How long does it take for one car length to pass in this video? Then do the math.

Amtrak would like to take out the at-grade crossing east of the Main Street Bridge but cannot because it serves as an alternate route for the fire department in case the bridge is blocked. The overpass to the west at 60th and Cole is only 10 feet high and only one lane so firetrucks can't fit under it and it can't be replaced because it is on an active line, same with the overpass on 657. The only other way to cross the tracks would be to detour up McGillen and take the long way around. I think we are going to see increasing problems with the outdated design on this line.

Is the rear Charger under power or is it shut down? If the latter, why is it in the consist at all? I hardly think a short train like that needs both locos to power it over fairly level track.

Another fact is the regulation on speed limits is 50mph max for freight rail and more for passenger rail, it is 70mph.

@@richardbaumgart2454 I learned the max speeds allowed for both, based on a very credible video put out by a career man of the American Rail System. Passenger Rail is either 70 or 80 max where practical. When I find the actual video I'll mention it here by name.

Just calculated it. Apparently each amtrack car is 85 feet so I looked at the amount of passenger cars in the vid and that was about 5 which brought the length to about 425 feet. Then I looked at the time stamp on the video for those 5 cars to pass and it was almost perfectly 3 seconds from 0:45 to 0:48. 425 feet divided by 3 seconds means 142 feet per second and that equates to 96 mph. So it’s pretty much going 100 mph. The size of the train makes it look slower

I run this exact train through here 6 days a week. Track speed through Mattawan is 110 mph.
