The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) chalked up another successful fly-in at the museum's home airport in Hood River, Oregon, the weekend of September 9-10, 2023. About 350 aircraft came to the fly-in, ranging from antiques to classic general aviation aircraft, a few warbirds, and homebuilts.
Highlight of the weekend was the display of an airworthy full-size replica Bristol Bulldog RAF biplane fighter of the late 1920s and 1930s. Builder Ed Storo flew the Bulldog from Tillamook, Oregon, to Hood River. The fly-in is WAAAM's biggest fundraiser of the year, and can help underwrite operations through the off-season months.
Museum staff and volunteers help make the fly-in a relaxing and engaging weekend for fliers and non-flying visitors, who have the opportunity to wander among rows of varied aircraft, striking up conversations with pilots who like to chat. The museum's large display hangars are open during the fly-in, and are filled with airworthy vintage aircraft and roadworthy antique cars and trucks.
Perched high on the bluff just south of the Columbia River at Hood River, Oregon, the WAAAM facility and airfield have views of Mount Adams to the north and Mount Hood to the south.
