NAS Brands in 2021 - Which One Should You Choose? nascompares.co...
Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this IS where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021.

What you should do is, separate your talking from the video, and place the hdd on something that actually resonate to simulate a regular NAS with it's limit sound proofing. Amplify the volume during the test, and have a regular hard drive that is common as a base you have that you jump between during those tests. Because as it is now, the volume is too low to hear the hard drive, and you're WAY too loud so all these videos does are making my ears hurt when you start talking mid-test over and over. Here's how audio should be for the HDD tests. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ertde8R2nJjQg58.html No talking, no loud noises unrelated to the HDD itself.

(sorry about comment on a 2yr old video). To test hdd noise, you need to test with many small files, above 500KB, as very small files are kept in NTFS file table. Large files only cause seeks when saving name and attributes in MFT, then it will keep writing on continuous area. It would help if you can fragment the drive, fill it first with small files, remove some of them, then write other files. Ensure you have quite small amount of free space, to force it to seek areas which are free. Nowadays hdds are large, so it has plenty of free space, which helps keep fragmentation quite low.

After seeing your youtube, I decided not to return my Western Digital 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530. I observed similar to what you showed with the HC330. Makes loud thumping noises at first and then gets quieter eventually. In general, it's pretty quiet except for when I was doing two long R/W operations simultaneously. You could definitely hear it. #1 Moving 3.5 TB from one external drive to this Ultrastar. #2 Moving 40 GB of data from one folder on this Ultrastar to another on this Ultastar.

I bought an 8TB Ultrastar DC HC320 and it makes a much louder noise when reading or writing, not every time, but for example when Windows decides to scan it for some reason, it's really obnoxious, I suppose it's how it is supposed to be after finding a video recording the noise I am referring to, but I thought so badly that the drive was dying that I formatted it and started to make my warranty work... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sJORh9mH1JudpI0.html I'm sharing all this because as a complete ignorant in NAS drives, this video comforted me in my fear that my drive was not working as intended to and with the regular clicking noise that Kuuki Yomenai described in the comments of your present video, I thought it was going to fail me very soon.

Western digital specification states noise level at idle is 20 decimal, and is 36 decibel while operating. However, the 16 TB UltraStar DC HC550 also makes klunking movement noise about 45 to 50 decibels once every 5 seconds 3/4 of the time, and once every 10 seconds 1/4 of the time. This noise is way too loud when sitting within two feet of the hard drive. Personally I think it is just too loud being within 5 ft of the hard drive. Is this repeating noise once every five or 10 seconds present in all of Western Digital internal hard drive. Which hard drive series has this noise and which doesn't?

Is the thumping sound only when under load, or also while idling? I'm in kind of a weird situation, having my storage server located in my parents work from home office, whilst I'm living right next door in my own house connected trough a 2.5Gbps Ethernet cable. My parents house has solar panels, so that's why the server is located in their house as it's powered on 24/7. The setup currently has 6x3TB WD-reds in raid-6, but sadly the storage is almost completely filled and some drives are nearing 8 years of age. I was wondering if it would be bearable for my parents (noise wise) to replace all 6 drives with 6 new 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 disks. My disks are mostly idling during the work hours of my parents, it's mainly when their office is empty during the evening and weekends when I'm using it that the system reaches peak loads. I don't think my parents would mind a constant humming noise from those drives, yet a constant thumping sound would get my dad annoyed rather quickly. Any opinion or experience with multiple drives and the thumping sounds during idle times?

when its about hdds, the biggest factor for me is reliability. and thats something you can rarely predict or test in a short term. HDD are the single most breaking point in my computers, since i started with my first pc in 1997. i had Hdds like the WD green 2tb that i bought in 2010, that lastet for 40.000 hours, and wd black, that went dead after just 9.000. and i know, its the mantra and its good practice to backup, but buying stuff redundant, in case one fails, should be the overall end solution here. especially not, if you need like 14tb of space, which then dobules the already high price. what iam looking for, is a 12-14 tb data grave hdd, that gets like 1-10 gb of data written on it week and that will last for at least 6 years with 12 hours on time per day. ye, i know, you can never be sure.. and thats the part i hate

Hi. I was wondering... Has reliability evolved on air-filled ultrastar hdds since hitachi was acquired by wd? For example, is a dc hc 300 series just a more dense evolution of the 7k3000 or have they changed on other ways and become more reliable than the old drives were? Thanks.

In regard to the Western digital ultrastar DC HC550 16 TB, idle and operating noise level is actually higher than what is state in the specification. And most irksome of all is the high pitched whiny noise it makes. Personally the 16 terabytes UltraStar is just too noisy to be used in a personal computer especially when sitting within several feet from the hard drive.

@@ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx WD Ultrastar vs Seagate IronWolf HDD. Ultrastar are enterprise class, whereas IronWolf are in the NAS class, which is a tier lower the the enterprise. So in terms of durability, the Ultrastar are more durable. But enterprise HDD are also noisier because they are meant for performance on a server rack instead of being meant for personal use, next to our ears in a PC. So it comes down to what you want, durability vs lower noise. However, I couldn't even find data sheet for ST8000VNZ04. So it could be a discontinued model. Beware of discontinued products. I would stay away from them.

This test is very flawed because the drive obviously isn't fully decoupled from your desk. I've watched your Seagate Exos video to compare the two and the Exos was decoupled 100%, not transferring any vibrations. The Ultrastar probably vibrates harder even when it's idling, and some of that energy goes into your desk, creating a loud low frequency hum. I know this noise very well from using my own USB dock, that's why I've put lots of foam padding under it.

No harm at all using it on its own, it will just be quite a noisy drive as it is geared to adapt very quickly on the fly to access.
