"Western Front Ace" - Overview, Setup, and First Patrol

A video overview, setup, and first patrol of the solitaire World War One board game "Western Front Ace" published by Compass Games and designed by Gregory Smith and Ian Cooper. The game allows the player to fly as a scout (fighter) pilot in World War One. The goal is to score as many victories as possible and simply survive.
We start in September 1916 as a pilot in the German Air Service and our first patrol is nearly the last as we encounter an elite enemy pilot over friendly lines.

I never missed your videos, quite entertaining as all solitaire games should. I have shared my "adventures" with my daughter and son; they find them quite entertaining. As yours, I might add.

Great video - best explanation I've seen for playing the game. Also, thanks for going into the details of the optional "S" charts. These were my main contribution as co-designer, and I hope they add a bit more narrative value for players who enjoy this type of game.

They really do add more flavor and I was glad to see them incorporated into the game outright instead of a fan-made modification (not that there's anything wrong with that!) Kudos for your part in making this such a fun and immersive solo game. :)

I actually did see that! I didn't know if it applied to enemy scouts and attempted to look it up in the rule book but couldn't find anything definitive. Good to know that's a thing!

Glad to see a new series! I don’t play these “narrative” game myself (still have the GMT games thanks to you, instead) but they’re perfect for watching you play through - after all, their purpose is to tell a story, and you bring that to a much higher level with your productions!

Thank you. This helped me to decide my purchase. This looks like a fantastic game for me. I'm a buff of WW1 dog fighting games and wooden ship era games. I wouldn't have wanted do either of those jobs in those eras mind you, but I sure eat up games and books about them. I suspect I'm not alone in that amongst us historical war gamers. 🙂

I've not had a video name check for my art before, so thanks for that! I did notice some of the counters are different to ones I did for the game. Are these what was used in Vassal, or your own substitions?

since you are German you should use the right side of encounter. you should also take down your ammo you used two but since you did not go for the ground attack no harm.

Ugh! You are correct. When I saw "Allied" I thought "my side of the line". I'll correct that going forward. Thanks for the catch!

great video, I bought the game after I watched this but my sortie log doesnt look like yours at all. For some reason mine only shows 2 lines per month for sorties but the rules still say roll for 1-6 sorties?? Any Idea what thats about?

Since enemy ace has maneuver skills as well, how is it determined when he uses them?

At 21:35, if you read the "Ace Encounter" section it states at the end: "All aces have Advanced Maneuvers 1-3 and will use the best possible one when defensive."

The sheet I use was downloaded from the BGG website and is not the one that comes with the game.
