Magdad That's, ĥands down, one of the best restorations I have ever seen. I would love to see the look on your friend's face when he sees the end result. The black coloring may not have come from the wet/dry sandpaper. It may have come from the water and the steel. The tannic acid left in the leather may have contributed. All said it may have been rust. Bob

Wow Magdad, you knocked that one out of the park! You made a point to mention putting a trash can under the vise. It's one of those things that's easy to forget to do. But if the blade shot out of the end cap onto the cement floor it could have snapped the point right off.

Outstanding restoration MagDad! I was so excited the moment I saw the thumbnail as I instantly recognized this knife. I owned a knife of nearly the exact same pattern and era only mine was manufactured by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. NY. The pummel on mine was about 3x thicker and had crude checkering on the end, otherwise nearly identical to yours. You did a fantastic job overall and really saved the handle finish from blackening caused by the wet/dry. No worries! What a great piece of history this knife is. This is one of my favorite videos of yours.
