When we think of Western Movies our minds go directly to John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and more great lead actors in the genre. Even they would admit that they could not do their job without standing on the shoulders of the great support they got from the actors and crew around them, especially the character actors. Today we will feature 10 and make special mention of more.

Two that should have received at least a mention were Ben Johnson and Victor McLaglen. He aptly represented the Irish that made up so much of the post-Civil War Army. I know he was actually British but he often portrayed Irishmen.
@nomadpi1
@nomadpi1 Жыл бұрын
Good point. McLaglen seemingly had a greater role range, due perhaps to a coterie of Hollywood buddies, but Ben Johnson, of Pawnee OK was an astute observer of behaviors - from Mighty Joe Young thru Shane thru The Last Picture Show. Both men added personas that shored up leading characters. I'll always remember the look Ben Johnson gave the two boys as they set off for a weekend in Mexico in The Last Picture Show. That look spoke volumes of emotion. I guess I remember it because I'm an old man. That "look" showed age's experiences and regrets because it was an old man seeing two young men making the mistakes that young men must make to become old men.

I love all these guys! Jack Elam is easily my favorite, but Strother Martin is probably the best actor. I have a Panama hat that I call my 'Strother Martin hat'. No one could play a lazy no-count better than Peter Whitney. Gabby Hayes pretty much defined the side-kick part, and people like Slim Pickens, Hank Worden and Ben Johnson were honest to goodness real cowboys. Denver Pyle was great, too. My favorite psycho villains were Richard Devon and Bruce Dern (who was sort of like a younger version of Devon). I'll stop now, I have way too many favorites!

Yeap, Strother Martin there is a two part Gunsmoke where he plays an old miner. "Island in the Desert" Festus is shot by the killer he is pursuing in the blazing desert, only to be helped by a crazed hermit and forced to tote water to try and get him to a town 80 miles away. Strother Martin's character has a pet snake which he later uses as a weapon .The year before Martin played a scientist researching snakes and developing a serum .The last scenes martin plays bring tears to your eyes and don't forget the classic line from Cool Hand Luke.... "what we got here is a fail to communicate"

Great selection of actors known best for their supporting roles. As to honorable mentions I would add L.Q. Jones. While Walter Brennen was probably the best actor in this group to me Jack Elam was the best. Not only could he play evil he actually looked evil. As his performance as Tevis in 1951 movie "Rawhide" shows. Same can be said for his comedic talent in "Support Your Local Sheriff".

Theres a story about Andy Devine. At Ward Bond's funeral John Ford went up to view the body and afterwards stopped to talk to Andy. Who was sitting right in front of John Wayne and his son. Ford leaned over and said to Devine "Well Andy, now you are the biggest asshole I know". Or words to that effect. I have always preferred character actors and have my favorites. Jack Elam, Dub Taylor, Walter Brennan, Strother Martin, Bruce Dern, just to name a few. They always made the movies more interesting.

Nice video! One can't forget the "John Ford Family" who appeared in so many of his films (and carried on with John Wayne). These included Ben Johnson, another real cowboy turned actor, Harry Carey Jr, , Ken Curtis, Hank Worden, Ward Bond, Mildred Natwick, and so many others.

You hit on most of my favorites. Loved Jack Elam and Strother, Kathleen Freeman, etc. One you left out was Robert J. Wilke. He played bad guys on just about every TV western I can think of. Another was Dennis Hopper. He did a lot of westerns back in the day.

I'm glad John Carradine got a mention at least. As a kid I was traumatised by The Wizard of Mars but the scene that scared me was only about a minute before that old ham appears on screen. If I'd only waited a few seconds I would not have been tormented by the memory because who could be scared by him? I seem to have a thing for oddball actors with polished voices, him, Joan Greenwood and George Sanders for example. RIP John

@@MichaelClark-uw7ex yes ,but Clint wasn't actually a character actor , 95% of the time he was a front line top star actor , while Bronson and Lee Van Cleef had over 150 television appeances where they gueststarred as character actors , before they became front line star actors .... so in reality Clint Eastwood has got nothing on Bronson & Lee Van Cleef in character acting .... only as a Star is Eastwood over the two , he starred in lots & lots of "movie" classics

Hi, Famous People..., Excellent list to say the least... "Who was the best ?" * My pick is..., the two that go hand-in-hand..., John Wayne and Ward Bond. Excellent video and very informative and "Thank you" for sharing the video... Very impressive list..., plus additional character actors... * This was one of the ( hardest lists ) to choose and pick from... "Semper Fi" Mike in Montana P.S.: Once again, thank you for sharing the excellent video and becoming one of the best Western Channels on KZfaq... :)

It's more about who you missed than who you included. The biggest oversight is Ben Johnson. When I read the title of the video his name was the first that came to mind. Also I would have added Ward Bond, Harry Carey Jr., L.Q. Jones, Hank Worden (sp?) and Victor McLaughlin. It's a good list but could have been better.

Please start doing the endless list of these great actors and actresses. I'll be a subscriber forever if you do. For the short run I'll sub now to see what else you do. However that depends, while an eternal researched list of support characters would not depend at all. I'd watch every video. Well, I just perused your previous efforts and I'm excited. You have already been doing what I just ask you to do plus more. I'm sticking to you like a fly on sticky paper. It's going to be a real pleasure for me. Thanks.

Wow! Brings back memories! Most moviegoers didn't know their names, but they sure knew their faces. I think the last hurrah for the great character actors was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." In his early career, Bruce Dern was one of the creepiest bad guys out there! I also seem to recall a mousy little bald guy who usually played one of the frightened townspeople being menaced by outlaws. Can't remember his name. Those people really brightened up movies in those days.
