Western AF presents | Benjamin Tod | "Wyoming"
...
I wrote this song over a decade ago with all the nihilism and despair that came with my youth. It was recorded on an older Lost Dog EP with my late friend Nicholas Ridout accompanying me.
It made it back onto ‘Songs I Swore I’d Never Sing’ being the realest example of the title. This song has been requested more than any other at shows or around the fire, but it never feels right to play without Nicholas.
I thought the only appropriate placement for its return would be an album like this. It’s cyclical I suppose, given that this song probably inspired the concept of this album. The subconscious is a dark and mysterious place. I really couldn’t tell you either way.
- Benjamin Tod

My kids dad just died ... he was a cowboy from Wyoming. I first heard this song the day after he died. Its crazy how music seeks out our soul. What a beautiful and haunting song... RIP Kye.

Benjamin Tod's music has meant so much to me over the past few years. His lyrics cut deep. From a divorce, suicide attempt, rampant alcoholism and selfishness...his lyrics became a rallying cry for my recovery. I'm five years sober a couple weeks ago, and his music and art has been an integral part of my recovery. Nothing but love for this man. ❤️

I relate and also have seen similar stories from people. Idk why but it's a natural progression. Maybe as we get older, the anger and rage fades and we relate more to this vibe. We've all had our hearts broke, failed, lost people, nearly given up at times. This music is just the ultimate comfort for me.

It’s really not a big coincidence that metal guys like you and me draw to country/western. I go from August Burns Red and Thy Art is Murder, to Colter Wall and Whitey Morgan on the daily. So much of it is about deep internal struggle. The instruments and beats are different, but lyrically they’re one in the same.

"Wyoming" Well men like me probably die alone With some broken dream on a dusty road And it may be sad, but so is everything that's true Well, if life's a gamble, then I bet the table on a pair of two's Oh, and the sun's probably shinin' in Wyoming And the moon, she's casting diamonds on the low-lyin' street And when my soul is finally set free You can burn my body in a prairie breeze By candlelight, paper and ink Wrote my final wish, killin' a drink And I thought of you It happened more times than a few I stared down a barrel and I wasn't able to follow through Oh, and the sun's probably shinin' in Wyoming And the moon, she's casting diamonds on the low-lyin' street When my soul is finally set free You can burn my body in a prairie breeze Oh when I'm gone, please remember me For my blue eyes, and the songs I'd sing And forget the bad I did all that I could do If I could take it back, I would, in fact, and give it all to you Oh, and the sun's probably shinin' in Wyoming And the moon, she's casting diamonds on the low-lyin' street When my soul is finally set free You can burn my body in a prairie breeze

Man this wrecks me every time. "Well men like me, probably die alone, with some broken dream, on a dusty road. And It may be sad, but so is everything that's true". This is no song, this is distilled struggle, and man this wrecks me every time.

The culture is dead here. Even this dude is not one of the culture, obviously... Despite America and Britain's fall, good music still remains. It's buried deep under the alcohol commercials and the propaganda they call songs. It's a hack you can see with your own eyes, people want to hear what everyone knows and has heard before. Like with all the good music we all can agree on out there, why is it in bars across the world we hear "put another dime in the juke box baby" so long after it was made. It wasn't even a good song when it was made but the peasantry sure wakes up when they hear that familiar garbage, meanwhile us outliers are begging them to stop putting that f'ing dime in that damned jukebox...

What a thing. This song has always resonated beyond the superficial for me, though I hold the right as a Wyomingite to always be stoked to have it mentioned by name in any capacity. But as I'm sure all of the folks who help with this channel can attest, it doesn't matter where you go or what you go through, or even how mad this place can make you. Standing in the sunshine in the sagebrush, lying in the prairie looking at the stars ... Walking among the truly wild spaces. It's special to us. It can heal many ailments. We're in this small club of people who know what we have here. All the good and bad that goes with it. When I die, I want to roam here. I want it to be better than it was given to me. Where I was born and where I want to remain.

My dream is to travel to the US and catch one of this man's shows live. His sound cuts through every fiber of my being, stops me dead in my track and forces me to focus all attention on the music. It's magic. - A Dutch fan

Benjamin Todd’s music stops my normally crowded and busy brain and lets me just enjoy the present moment. It’s so awesome to see his music develop over the years, as well as him as a person. He looks healthier, older. Luv him and his lovely wife.

Glad to get the live collab of this with Western AF and Benjamin Tod. This song has a sweetly soul crushing truth to it. Eveytime I roll through Wyoming in my semi my playlist just seems to know and this tune eerily comes on. In the end, we all go on alone.

I love hearing Ben re-release stuff from like 10 years ago.. From the "Life's a dog-gone shame," version of this to this? It's amazing seeing the progression of him as an artist, man.. Same with the sick pup version of "from the day you were born," to the magnolia sessions version of "from the day you were born." They're all awesome versions of awesome tracks, but it's cool to see how refined and perfected it is now after him playing it probably a million times..

My oldest sister (45) passed away last week 4.18.2024 This song made me think of her when I heard it yesterday afternoon. It was by accident that I heard it but it made everything hit pretty hard. I never thought I would have to say "Goodbye." So soon to her. I hope she is having the best time with our Mom in heaven.

Reminds me of an old cowboy song and it also makes me think of my home in the Rio Grand valley down in south Texas. It's bitter sweet to live in the west and too live in places with so much pain and sorrow Truly a beautiful song sung by a 21st century cowboy poet.
