Commentary
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is a great property with many updated facilities, situated right on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. There are four restaurants, two pools, a spa, and a gym on site. The most notable feature of the resort is its proximity to the beach and all restaurants have breath-taking views of the ocean. The base rooms are fairly standard hotel rooms and leave a bit to be desired at their ~$700/night rate. But as a Category 6 Marriott property, it makes for great award redemptions. The resort is about a 15 minute drive from Waikoloa Village and a 35 minute drive from KOA airport. If you can find award availability, this property is definitely worth a visit!
Our November 2021 Reservation
We redeemed 320,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for two base rooms for five nights each and were upgraded to Ocean View rooms by redeeming Suite Night Awards. Cash price for the base rooms were $700 per night, making our redemption about 2.2 cents per point. The Suite Night Award upgrade to Ocean View rooms was worth $300 per night.

I stayed here on my honeymoon back in 2003 when it was the Hapuna Beach Prince. Great spot.

Thank you. I’m glad you found the video useful and I hope you have a memorable stay at the Westin Hapuna Beach. There were a few notable restaurants I tried outside of the hotel. 10 miles South (about 15 minute drive) of the property is Roy’s Waikoloa Bar & Grill which serves Hawaiian fusion cuisine and Sansei which serves sushi rolls. Sansei opens at 5pm and almost all items are 50% off when ordered before 5:30pm. All rolls and great and their butterfish is excellent. 12 miles East (about 20 minute drive) of the property is Merriman’s Big Island which has locally sourced American/Hawaiian food.

Do you think the price reasonable?

No, I don’t think the cash rate is reasonable. The room rate when we went during Nov 2021 was around $700/night, which is more than I am willing to pay out of pocket. Our booking was on Marriott points.

@@TadashiTravelTours Been here before as a Plat, shortly after the renovations. There was a short window around the tail end of 2019 to early 2020, right before the pandemic when renovations were mostly complete but it was still a Cat 5. The issue at the time was that there was construction of the condos(timeshares?) going on during weekdays. So the best time to stay was for 2 nights, Friday and Saturday, when you could book it at 70k points or 2 Cat 5 certs or a combination. Rack rate was around $400-500 at the time. It was an absolute bargain. Great place to stay but definitely pretty spendy if you'll be eating on property. Honestly, I wouldn't stay here unless it was on a 50k Cert and I have at least Platinum at the time of stay. Its nice, but if I'm going to fly long haul, there are infinitely better places in Asia at these rates. The beach, views, and food are almost top notch. Everything else is middling. Soft product is bordering on lazy. Still, I know of deep pocketed people who fly to the Big Island just to stay here every year. You're going to have a car anyway, so unless its a special occasion I would rather pay a third of the rate and stay at the Double Tree in Hilo. You can do a day trip to Hapuna and Kona from there.

@@WHERESSS Wow. I didn’t know this property was a category 5. That’s an awesome 35k point/night redemption. It was bumped to category 6 as of our stay in 2021. We booked 5 award nights during low season and ended up paying 160k. I agree with you that I would not pay the cash rate for this property and visiting as Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador definitely makes the experience better. Haha to the comment about a Double Tree in Hilo. But very true for those that are out and about most of the day and only use their hotel room to sleep, a Double Tree or Holiday Inn would be a much better value proposition.

I’ve stayed at Hapuna Prince Beach hotel yearly for the summer and when Westin took over things were not the same. I won’t stay there anymore. Westin ruined the hotel’s charm. I preferred when it was the Prince.

@Scully392z, thanks for sharing. I haven’t read much about what the property was like when it was like as the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. What was the property like back then? Was it less crowded/more private?
