I Love Lucy aired on CBS, the show starred Lucille Ball, her husband, Desi Arnaz, along with Vivian Vance and William Frawley. The series followed the life of Lucy Ricardo (Ball), a young, middle-class housewife living in New York City, who often concocted plans with her best friends, Ethel and Fred Mertz (Vance and Frawley), to appear alongside her bandleader husband, Ricky Ricardo (Arnaz), in his nightclub.

One thing I can say about refrigerators back then was this .....THEY LASTED A VERY LONG TIME!!! I know because I have my Grandfather's old fridge from the 50's and it still works fine to this day. The only repair it needed was the door seal went bad and I modified a new seal to fit just fine. It easily stays cold and very reliable! Todays REFRIGERATORS are junk. My friend had to replace his fridge 2 x's in 8 years.

Those appliances are very expensive when compared to 2022 dollars. $1 in 1959 is equivalent to about $10 today (2022). Also, it looks like Desi Arnaz's hair is combed slightly different, and got darker between 3:29 and 3:46. Those Westinghouse appliances did amazing things back then.

It is like when computers came out and VCRs--expensive at first then the prices came down but yes that seems outrageous for an earlier Westinghouse fridge

Accord to a price/inflation calculator, that 1949 Westinghouse refrigerator would cost $3818 in 2022 ! Yikes ! And it had very basic features compared to 1959 one --at least that was what the salesperson pitched to Lucy and Ethel.

The pitching sales person was Betty Furness who began her career in these commercials. Furness ended her career as TODAY hostess during the transition from Barbara Walters to Jane Pauley. Later she made excellent contributions as a consumer advocate for NBC.

That’s lot of money on appliances. In 1959 my grandparents’ 1952 house with Kenmore appliances and mortgage payment was $65. And my folks didn’t have any Westinghouse. We had is Hotpoint, General Electric, and Frigidaire.

Back then, most of these appliances were bought either "on time" (i.e. rent-to-own) or on credit. Nobody bought it outright. It was like financing a car.

Well, now imagine how you made someone born in 1949 feel with your comment! 😂 All kidding aside, you’re a few years younger than both my parents and as long as you’re young at heart, keep a sharp mind and get some daily exercise (whatever you choose to do), that will keep pep in you’re step! I wish many children nowadays would listen to the wisdom of their “elders.” So many lessons to be learned! May you continue to live a long, healthy, happy life. 🥰

The half hour "I Love Lucy" ended in 1957, but the series continued on until 1960 as a series of specials in a one-hour format (airing every month or two). It was titled "The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show" (or "Westinghouse Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show"), later renamed "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" when it went into reruns

Not sure I'd be so proud of a deflationary cycle. Either the tech or the mfr process got more advanced so it cost less, or the economy was suffering from the 1958 recession and nobody was buying. A little of both at work here. The appliance division was the most visible due to advertising, but Westinghouse itself had many divisions, and kind of split apart over the years, with the broadcasting/entertainment portion being Viacom to this day, and the rest of it having gone the way of manufacturing in USA - ceded to the Chinese et al.

Westinghouse bought CBS (merging their Group W broadcast division) and sold off the industrial and appliance units. They then took the name of CBS. More mergers evolved today to Paramount Global which includes Viacom, CBS, Paramount Pictures. All are under the control of National Amusements.
