My power is still out, and I need to connect my dual fuel westinghouse 12500 to natural gas. I am very confused with the regulator stuff. Do I have to disconnect the one for propane ? To be able to connect to the natural gas one? Is there any link/model number for a natural gas regulator? Do we find them in a Lowe's or Home Depot around the Houston area?
@roberto5537
@roberto5537 Ай бұрын
@@redb2153 Hi, if the stock propane regulator is adjustable, some are but not many, then you can open the adjustment screw a few turns, and that should be fine, if it is not adjustable, you have to buy that special low pressure regulator do not put a barbecue regulator on it. That would be dangerous because the gas will continue to flow gas even if the generator is off, I believe you can get a Nash regulator on Amazon eBay or directly from Nash

I used the regulator that came with the generator for natural gas conversion. I removed the brass fitting that was between the propane regulator and black regulator and installed a quick connect on the regulator. I ran a 10' 3/8" hose from there to my house meter were i have another quick connect. It runs perfect on natural gas. The brass fitting is only needed for propane as it has a smaller orifice. I'll put a quick connect on it so i can use propane when needed.

Thank you for sharing your setup Jerry. So, did you connect the propane regulator that came with the generator to your NG metal pipe using a quick connect? Also, did you have a chance to test the maximum wattage that the generator can handle? I assume the regulator that came with the generator doesn't have a screw that throttles the gas flow unlike the one that comes with 100155 kits. So, I wonder if the generator will get the right amount of NG when the black regulator that come with the generator. Thank you very much for your time in advance.

@@newsysop I used a quick connector on the Black regulator. I've only tested with my RV with everything running. The generator only spiked up to 50% load and back to 25%. It Didn't run any different than it did on gas or propane. I'm sure there will be some loss in power but for my use it's irrelevant. The propane regulator nearest the bottle will have an orifice to reduce flow. The black regulator doesn't have any restriction so it has plenty enough flow.

That is a really neat gas conversion for the generator. Truth is, the Igen 4500 is really meant to power RV's, so its only going to at best power 1/4 of a persons house. But hey, maybe thats all he needs. All I know is, its sure is quiet! I bought the Westinghouse Wegen 7500 open framed generator, powers everything that I need it to, but sucker is loud in comparison.

Should work fine, some new generators have the low pressure regulator Already installed, The low pressure regulator settings is different from propane to natural gas so you would have to have two separate pressure voltage regulator The way you see it in this video one set up for propane and one set up for natural gas no adjustments were done to the generator it is completely stock except for the inlet fitting that we installed for a quick change between propane and natural gas, But this is an option and does not have to be done

If it’s a dual fuel generator, then it already has a regulator for the propane. Adding the extra regulator seems to be an unnecessary duplication, unless there is some major difference in pressure or flow rates. Have tried it without the extra regulator to see if one already on the generator is sufficient.

Has anyone ever been able to determine the approximate BTU's/Hr or CF/Hr usage on natural gas under various electrical loads (idle, half-load, full load)? I have a A250 natural gas meter (est. maximum 250,000 BTUs) that currently serves a 110,000 BTU natural gas Boiler (for heat and domestic hot water), a natural gas stove/oven (9,500-74,5000 BTUs but when in use, generally usage is closer to 27,500 BTUs while cooking) , and a natural gas clothes dryer (20,000 BTUs, if it's needed for laundry). At general utilization, it looks like I'll have about (at most) about 92,500 BTUs available to supply the generator. If anyone has information of the estimated NG usage by the iGen4500 under various loads using NG, it'd be appreciated.

This generator started as a duel fuel(Gas/Propane)? Did you need to add the nash inline fuel adaptor, or did you use the Propane port from the original Propane portion of the generator? Why change the propane fitting on the generator? Was that so that you could bleed out the NG supply hose prior to attachment to the generator? Many have said to not convert a propane unit to NG and that it is better to start with a gas unit then add the motor snorkel or nash unit infront of the air filter. Did you do this too?
@roberto5537

Hi Larry, no Kit was installed I used the original propane intake, I didn’t like the original 3/8 fitting setup some generators have the quick connect from the factory and that’s what I wanted, this is a Option and it does not have to be done, but it makes it easy to Disconnect and change from one fuel to the other. No tools required if I’m not home my wife can easily Figure it out and there’s no way I’m doing it wrong, you can Bleed the air from the house while it’s attached to the generator I never start on gasoline and switch over to something else. The air fuel adjustment is on the Regulator not on the generator so by having two regulators one set up for propane and one for NG just attach the one you want and start. The Champion 100155 should work on any generator for the conversion? Also, is it critical the way you connected the conversion kit to NG?

First, thanks to Robert O for the video. I would not have tackled this without his example. Adam, I contacted the regulator manufacturer, Impco technologies, who makes the Garretson KN regulators. Per their techincal support, the regulator is best positioned within 2 feet of the generator (so apparently it is not optimal to place the regulator at the far end of a 3/8" supply hose as Robert O has done, although his approach seems to have worked for him). Given this information, I put quick connects on both ends of my conversion (shunning having to screw in the regulator at the source each time that Robert O used). I used a 1/2" quick connect on the supply side attached to my 1/2" house stub, with a 1/2" hose feeding the 3/4" supply side of the regulator, and then between the regulator and the unit I used a 3/8" quick connect. I found the 100155 kits to have unnecessary parts and were missing a load block (I got the proper type of load block for $18 + shipping from US Carburetion). If I had it to do over again I could have saved $50 from the kit price and just bought the regulator alone on Amazon and pieced together the rest. I have no flimsy hoses, barb fittings or hose clamps in my setup -- nothing but solid flare or npt connections. My setup works great. Now I look forward to the next power outage!

@@roberto5537 Robert, big fan here, I set up my Predator 3500 from your video about that genset. Just for info only, I'm running 18' of 3/8" air hose from the regulator on the natural gas meter plumbing and have 3KW full power. Your original tip about the Parker brand quick connect fittings is probably the reason. I discovered that those fittings are used on pressure washer lines, therefore the lack of internal valving and obstructions. They are available for about 1/2 the Parker price from Lowe's and Home Depot and seem to work fine. I first tried regular air line quick fittings, but dropped about 20% in power due to the restricted flow. My propane hookup also gets the same 3KW output @ 4.5 turns out on the Load Block. Natural gas is at 6 turns for my gear. Thanks again, keep up the amazing work, you've saved us a lot of experimenting and frustration.

So the main reason you convert to natural gas capable is to run it from your house supply? Is natural gas cheaper, safer or more efficient or more powerful of a fuel than propane because I'm thinking maybe I should fill my RV propane tanks with the natural gas? Thanks for caring and sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
@roberto5537

Natural gas is about 1/3 the price of gasoline or propane it doesn’t have any more power maybe a bit less, endless supply and price was the main reason, We lost power 2 times for 3 day in one month used over $120 of propane the first time every one was getting per filled propane for cooking on the BBQ, couldn’t refill your bottles because gas stations had no power and couldn’t get gasoline either, had to drive 20 miles and long lines. with Natural Gas you don’t have to have 3 or 4 full bottles or propane around just in case it happens again, never heard of the natural gas ever been turned off in stormy weather. Second time 3 days we used NG no stress on running out and running 24/7, on propane we turn off at night

Question - Troubleshooting actually. I got everything connected for my iGen4500DF, but it won't handle any load at all. On propane I can load it up and it purrs along at 3500 watts, but a hairdryer alone on natural gas dropped the voltage into the 50's and the engine never made any attempt to ramp up to compensate for the load. I'm connected directly to a 1/2 gas line, then the rubber hose from the regulator is connected to an extension via quick disconnect and 10' hose. It starts, but no amount of adjusting on the load block makes any difference. I have to be about 8 turns out to run and leaning it at all just kills it. I suspect a fuel problem, but don't have a way to bypass the extension hose right now. I've ordered a shorter hose with flares on each end and will attach that way eliminating the quick disconnect to see if that's the issue. I emailed Nash, but no reply yet.

I think the problem is mostly solved now. I removed the quick disconnects and extension hose and replaced it with 3/8 hose and flare fittings on each end. Once I did that, I was able to run the genny up to just past half load and it held okay. If I try to go to 3000 watts, it drops voltage and eventually goes into overload shutdown. A test run today with the load block screw almost all the way out and the new flared 8' line, it powered the house (no AC or Heat) The goal was to be able to keep both refrigerators going along with modems, lights, and one portable AC unit "just in case" It handled those just fine. So apparently the problem was a gas restriction in the disconnects and extension.
@ggimlick
@ggimlick 4 жыл бұрын
@claude Yeah, I knew it would be less power on NG, but I was a bit surprised that it was that much different. The test run shows it will do what I needed it to do though with the lockout on the house. hopefully the hurricanes all pass NC and I'll never have to depend on it ;-) Never did hear back from Nash after I called and he asked for photos of the setup.

A 1/2 inlet gas line is small especially if it’s far away from the gas meter, and from the regulator the quick connector after the regulator can’t have any restrictions like air line fittings, it needs to be gas line quick Connector like for a BBQ or a Pressure washer, I can get 3500 continuous watts from the Igen4500 and 3000 watts from HF predator on NG, with a 3/4 gas supply line and a 3/8 8ft or 1/2 12ft from the regulator to the generator. @@roberto5537 The half inch line comes off a 3/4” line about six inches from the meter. The extension was a gas line for a propane grill with the quick disconnects that came with it.
