I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 4, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. I filled in at a local Lutheran Church today and played it as the Opening Hymn. It is #632 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks to those who have gone before us.

I have sung this song for decades now. But I never noticed a phrase that occurs in the first and last stanzas: "and our eternal home." In the first stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our shelter. In the last stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our guard. Both stanzas end with us asking Him to be our eternal home. I confess, I usually think of heaven in terms of a location. And while biblically, Heaven is a real place, the thing that makes it so appealing is that our Father is there. Being away from a sinful world and in a new place of perfection should not be the goal of my life. Rather being with my Father, who loved me so much that he gave Jesus as a sacrifice so that I could be right with Him--THAT is the goal of my life. HE is what makes it heaven!

And because the uncreated God is there to sustain and provide, He is our energy and light and being. We can only dimly imagine what Heaven will be like, but as Paul says, we will put off mortality and put on immortality and see clearly, see face to face.

What a powerful hymn that reminds us of our days on earth and the life eternal. The lyrics and the music that had flown through this composer are definitely inspired by God. What a great experience for the composer. As we sing, we feel the presence of God and the Holy Spirit and I am sure that this hymn lives till the second coming of Jesus Christ

The great thing about hymnody, especially in these times, is that no denomination has a monopoly. And that great once-denominational hymns are now being sung in churches around the world.

A good example of this: "Praise to the Holiest in the height" by John Henry Newman was written to commemorate his conversion _from_ Anglicanism _to_ Roman Catholicism - but it is found in practically every Anglican hymn book I have seen!

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 2 Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home.

Last hymn sung at the morning service of sunday, apr. 14, 1912 presided over by Cpt. Smith. Archibald Gracie IV recalls it and writes: “What a remarkable coincidence that at the first and last ship's service on board the Titanic, the hymn we sang began with these impressive lines: O God our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast And our eternal home”. In loving memory of all who perished.

CashPresley32 I don't doubt it. I was just puzzled by the comment. OP said it was 'from the Anglicans' as it is (loosely). And now a gazillion different hymn books include it, so your comment about one of the many was, well, puzzling at best lol. And it's only more puzzling when you consider that LDS aren't actually a Christian confession (not least b/c they deny the trinity along with JWs & oneness pentecostals). So yeah, I just didn't follow the comment, that's all.

@hyramesshiramess10357 жыл бұрын
If you listen often enough with pencil, and score paper in hand, you should be able to take it down by ear. These things are rarely published. Church organists most often compose them as part of the job. Better yet, try writing one of our own. Delving your inner ear, makes music all the more ,meaningful and enjoyable.
@jandrewmctyre75647 жыл бұрын
Thank you HH. Pencil and paper is exactly what we did. Had our choir sing it (with a slight variation) at my father's funeral 2 years ago. The variation came in that while we had several outstanding soprano's we did not have a young boy's choir to duplicate it exactly. Nonetheless, it was grand.
