In this episode I show you how I carve the Neck for the Westone Pantera X390 Tribute Guitar Build by hand.
The last couple of weeks I didn't have as much time in the workshop as I would have liked but I managed to carve the neck and shape the volute by hand. Coming weeks I hope to get around doing the 12th fret inlay and position markers, radius the fretboard and install the frets.

I've seen you do this a few times and I've learned a few shortcuts from your meticulous planning style, including planning my laminate necks so that the relief lines are built into the laminate pattern, to keep my cutting accurate by focusing on how straight those lines are, and that those japanese files are amazing. I do 80% of the carving by feel and then start using profile checking and depth measurement knowing I tend to build a chunky C shape with too much depth to start, leaving me room to pare it down.

Hi Daniel as usual very informative video. Really appreciate your detailed explanation of the facet technique. I wonder how this would apply to a D shape neck profile. Thanks for sharing your experiences

You make necks look so effortless! Out of curiosity - how high can your bandsaw cut? I'm looking to get one in the next few weeks and I'm uncertain about resaw height and what would be good.

Yep he is a true craftsman. For what it's worth I just bought a Rikon 324 for 1,200 out the door from Rockler and it's a great saw with 13 inches of re-saw. I looked long and hard and it got the best reviews. Hope that helps

I would say you need a tad over half the size of the biggest body you intend on making for a book match blank around 7.5" - 8" would probably do

If you want to resaw for bookmatching tops, you need a bigger band saw that can do 7" plus vertically. Mine only does 5.5" but I found a workaround by doing a double bookmatch 4 piece top after cutting the top in half and then resawing each half. You just reconnect where you sawed in half and fold the new pieces out. If I had had the space I would have gotten the 14" Rikon, although its 3x the price. I think the 10" saw and my miter saw are a better combination over all than a big bandsaw.

Hi Owen, Mine cuts up to a height of about 165mm. For re-sawing tops it is too low to be honest and the bandsaw itself is to unreliable for re-sawing. I'm looking to get the Laguna 14x12 it should have a max. cutting height of 305mm.
